  • Partner Emeritus
Albert P. Roberts has been practicing law for over 52 years. He is essentially retired but remains active in practice for select clients. He is a friend and mentor to every member of our firm and he willingly shares his extensive experience in Land Use, Land Development and Municipal Law with other members of the firm. Al graduated from Suffolk University Law School in Boston in 1970 with a Juris Doctor Degree; he was admitted to practice before the Courts of the State of New York in January, 1971, and shortly thereafter was admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. For 7 years, he was an Associate in the Law Firm of Russell E. Aldrich in Poughkeepsie, New York and upon Mr. Aldrich's death, became a partner at Crane, Wolfson, Roberts & Greller where he remained until 1990; in 1990, he was appointed Attorney to the Town of Wappinger. Since one of his partners was a Town Justice, Al was required to relocate his practice. He briefly joined the firm of Gellert & Cutler until 1993, when he became a partner in the firm of Vergilis, Stenger, Lucia & Roberts, the predecessor of this law firm, Stenger, Glass, Hagstrom, Lindars & Iuele LLP. The emphasis in Al's practice has been business relationships (corporations, LLC's and partnerships), land use, land development and environmental law, which led to his appointment as Attorney for several municipalities, including the Town of Union Vale, the Town of Wappinger and the Town of Dover. He also was General Counsel to the Wappinger Central School District and New Paltz Central School District. Al has also consulted with the Village of Wappingers Falls and the Village of Fishkill. Al had two terms as Attorney for the Town of Union Vale: 1977-1993 and again 2005-2017. While at Union Vale, he oversaw massive re-drafting of the Town's Zoning Code, Subdivision Regulations, and developed special legislation to permit the Town to use a portion of the Town-owned Tymor Park (the largest town park in the State of New York) for use as a Town Hall Complex. As Attorney to the Town of Wappinger, Al oversaw several major re-drafts of the Town's Zoning Code, Subdivision Regulations and internal Town Codes. He negotiated the original contract with the Tri-Municipal Sewer Commission for the treatment of the Town's sewerage at the Tri-Municipal Sewer Plant in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Al also formulated special legislation to permit the Town to consolidate its separate Sewer Districts and Sewer Improvements into one large district for ease of administration and management. He did the same for the Town's Water Districts and Improvement Areas. This special legislation greatly simplified the management of the Town's Water and Sewer Systems. In the private sector, Al was lead Attorney on several large shopping centers in Dutchess and Orange Counties, including many of the commercial properties and shopping centers from the southern part of the Town of Poughkeepsie through to the Town and Village of Fishkill. In the 1980's, he was the lead Attorney for the annexation of a large parcel of land into the Village of Fishkill which resulted in the Fishkill Shoprite Plaza. Al's current practice is limited to land development and business transactions for a select group of long-standing clients.
