Alan Henderson

Job Titles:
  • Scientist
Alan Henderson has been a forensic scientist since 1990 and specialises in cases involving: footwear marks, glass, paint and other particulates, textile fibres, fires and accelerants, and the main aspects of firearms and ammunition classification work. Customers say he is "excellent in presenting matters to the jury". Mr Henderson's experience in many disciplines was built up over 21 years at the Forensic Science Service (FSS) and he joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2011. Mr Henderson has experience in a very wide range of evidence types, having been part of various multi-disciplinary and Major Incident teams whilst at the FSS. This also provided him with experience of attending scenes, as an on-call rota scientist. He has given evidence in a range of courts in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, on many occasions, and also attended court regularly to advise legal professionals. Mr Henderson has the following qualifications: BSc(Hons), CChem, MRSC. He is also a Member of the United Kingdom Association of Fire Investigators and a Member of the International Association of Fire Investigators. Alex Bretherton

Alex Bretherton joined Keith Borer Consultants in May 2022 and specialises in drink-drive and drug-drive casework. Having previously obtained 5 years' experience as a forensic drug analyst, he is familiar with the legislation and pharmacology pertaining to controlled substances. He has the following alcohol-related reporting experience: BAC calculations Drunk in charge Effects of medications on evidential test results Laced drinks Mr Bretherton holds a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Pharmacology from the University of Bath and a Master of Science degree with Distinction in Forensic Science from King's College London. Alex regularly conducts peer reviews and critical findings checks of alcohol and drug related casework and has completed the Bond Solon Expert Witness Courtroom Skills course. Andrew Farley

Andrew Farley has been involved in the field of imagery analysis since 1987 and specialises in the use of still images and video to identify people/objects, to analyse events/actions and provide image improvement and presentation. Mr Farley served in the Royal Air force for almost 30 years, providing imagery support to all branches of the armed forces and government agencies. In 1997 he was awarded the Medmenham Trophy and title of Imagery Analyst of the Year by the Ministry of Defence, recognising his contribution to his specialisation for that year. In 2003 he was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE). He joined Keith Borer Consultants at the beginning of 2016. He has also given evidence in court and has completed the Bond Solon Courtroom Skills Training course. Andrew Farley can be contacted at our Durham office.

Chris Walsh

Chris Walsh is a cell site analyst who joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2021, following twenty-eight years' service with North Wales Police. During his career he served for over twenty years as a Detective in a variety of covert and specialist roles at both Force and Regional level. There he focused on computer & mobile phone forensics, cybercrime and as a Digital Media Investigator, providing investigative strategies to Senior Officers in respect of the most serious of crimes, primarily involving homicide, robbery, sexual offences and large-scale drug conspiracies. Mr Walsh holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Cybercrime Forensics, awarded by Canterbury Christchurch University, together with a City & Guilds in Radio Frequency Propagation Surveying covering radio and cellular network operating principles and radio frequency surveying techniques. He is also qualified as an Accredited Communications Data Investigator and has undertaken further specialist overt and covert training in respect of wireless technologies. Due to his strong technical background, Mr Walsh undertook the role of Technical Manager within the North Wales Police Digital Forensics Unit and was instrumental in helping the unit achieve accreditation to the ISO17025:2005 quality standard in forensic data acquisition.

David Platt

David Platt is an experienced forensic scientist specialising in the examination of firearms, ammunition and related items. He joined Keith Borer Consultants in January 2022 and has worked in the industry since 2016. During his career he has worked for customers including the National Crime Agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, Ministry of Defence Police, Royal Military Police, UK Border Force and various English and Welsh police forces. Mr Platt specialises in the identification and legal classification of firearms, ammunition and associated items under the provisions of the relevant UK firearms legislation. His work primarily involves the examination and testing of weapons and ammunition for functionality, including the examination of air weapons, airsoft guns and other weapons to determine their kinetic energy. Such work can involve consideration of trigger pull levels and accidental discharge assessment, plus range of fire assessment and effectiveness of weapon function. He also has experience of scene reconstruction, interpretation of firearms related damage to objects, vehicles and clothing, and post mortem attendance to conduct firearms injury causation assessments. Mr Platt holds a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Archaeology from the University of Reading and a Master of Science postgraduate degree in Forensic Archaeology: Crime Scene and International Investigations from Bournemouth University.

Dorothy Allan

Dorothy Allan has been a forensic scientist since 1987 and specialises in: handwriting and signature cases; cases involving footwear and other marks; glass, fibres and other particulates. Mrs Allan worked at the Forensic Science Service (FSS) for 25 years and joined Keith Borer Consultants in January 2012. She gained an upper second class degree in Chemistry from the University of St Andrews in 1987. Mrs Allan has experience in a very wide range of evidence types, having been part of various multi-disciplinary teams whilst at the FSS. She has given evidence in Crown and Magistrates Courts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on numerous occasions. Mrs Allan can be contacted at our Huntingdon Office.

Dr David Schudel

Dr Schudel joined the senior management team in 2018 and is responsible for business development and marketing, day-to-day running of Keith Borer Consultants and also casework including fire investigation, forensic chemistry and cell site analysis. Dr David Schudel has been employed as a forensic scientist since 1991 specialising in forensic chemistry (including drug analysis), fire investigation and cell site analysis. He has worked in the UK, USA and Cayman Islands and given expert testimony in these jurisdictions as well as Guyana and Ireland. He regularly takes on cases that do not fall into traditional areas of forensic science which often involve customised approaches to reconstruction or analysis. Dr Guy Cooper

Dr Cooper has been employed as a forensic consultant since 1995. Since 2018, the majority of his casework has been within the Imagery Team. He also has over 25 years' experience specialising in more traditional forensic disciplines, in particular footwear mark comparison evidence, the transfer of glass fragments and other particulate debris (such as paint), tool marks, physical fit evidence and other types of physical damage. Dr Cooper's caseload involves the enhancement of CCTV, phone and body-cam video footage, the comparison of people (facial comparisons), clothing and objects in photographs and video clips, and events analysis. Following industry guidelines, he has developed and moderated internal proficiency tests for the measurement of the height of a subject from such materials. As an experienced member of the team, Dr Cooper also authors cases involving trace evidence and alcohol BAC calculations, and performs critical findings checks and peer reviews in fingerprint cases. Dr Hayley Ash

Dr Hayley Ash specialises in Collision Investigation Reconstruction and joined Keith Borer Consultants in November 2000. She is primarily instructed for civil proceedings but has also prepared reports for criminal, insurance and private cases. She has prepared reports for cases on behalf of both claimants and defendants, numerous joint statements with other experts, and been instructed as a single joint expert. As part of her day-to-day role, Hayley examines incident loci, the vehicles involved, photographs, CCTV footage, witness statements and other technical reports. Dr Helen Davey

Dr Davey has been a forensic biologist since 1994. For six years she was a senior scientist at the Forensic Science Service Laboratory, Huntingdon. She specialises in Blood Pattern Analysis, the interpretation of DNA profiling results including LCN profiling and the assessment of crime scenes. She is also fully trained in the examination of body fluid staining, damage to clothing and fibre recovery and identification. Dr Davey has prepared reports and given evidence in Courts throughout the UK and has undertaken international casework. Dr Davey can be contacted at our Huntingdon office.

Emma Youngson

Emma Youngson joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2019 with 19 years' experience as a forensic scientist. She specialises in forensic biology and alcohol-related casework, including : DNA profiling blood pattern analysis body fluids drink drive BAC calculations Mrs Youngson has a BSc(Hons) in Biochemistry with Microbiology and Biotechnology from the University of St Andrews and a MSc in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde. She has successfully completed both basic and advanced bloodstain pattern analysis courses in the USA and is a Member of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts (IABPA). Gregg Beatson

Gregg Beatson joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2018 having served as a Police Officer for 30 years, with the majority of that time working in the arena of Roads Policing and Collision Investigation, culminating in the position of Senior Collision Investigator. He has prepared a significant number of reconstruction reports in relation to serious and fatal collisions and has given expert witness evidence in Coroner's, Magistrates and Crown Courts. Gregg Beatson holds City & Guilds qualifications in Collision Investigation and Motor Vehicle Examination. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Combined Sciences (Collision Investigation) and has been awarded membership of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (MITAI) and the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences (MCSFS). Some recent feedback from instructing Counsel highlighted that Gregg was "professional, knowledgeable and gave his opinion well". Jennefer Gray

Jennefer Gray specialises in forensic chemistry casework including explosives and explosive devices, fire investigations, gunshot residues and incapacitant sprays. She also reports on alcohol BAC calculations, drink drive procedure and alcohol-related incidents.

Julian Dunnill

Julian Dunnill specialises in matters involving controlled and medicinal drugs and has extensive expertise in many areas relating to drug seizures, including drug synthesis/production, new psychoactive substances, methodologies of drug importation and drugs intelligence. He has many years of experience in drug analysis techniques and in the interpretation of subsequent analytical data. Mr Dunnill also provides expertise in cases requiring drug valuations (including Proceeds of Crime Applications), drug usage patterns and in the interpretation of text messages pertinent to drug-related activities. He has reported and reviewed thousands of cases including major and high profile drug operations, nationally and internationally, and is a seasoned witness at Court. Mr Dunnill has also written widely on issues relating to drug evidence. Mr Dunnill joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2014 after 22 years at the Forensic Science Service where he was a senior scientist. He has also worked in the ESR Forensic Laboratory in New Zealand in the same capacity, and within the pharmaceutical research industry. Whilst at the FSS laboratory in Wetherby, amongst other functions, Mr Dunnill was the lead cannabis cultivation expert for many years. He led on the training of colleagues and law enforcement officers in matters relating to drugs seizures, crime scene examination and presenting evidence at Court, as well acting as an advisor on drug-related matters, providing support to customers in such areas as test purchase operations, planned drug raids and force policies. Karen Caramiello

Karen Caramiello is an experienced Handwriting & Questioned Document Examiner, who joined the team in Huntingdon in 2020. She previously worked at the Forensic Science Service. Ms Caramiello's expertise includes handwriting and signature comparison, and document examination, in both criminal and civil cases. She is instructed to carry out original work, as well as critically appraising work previously carried out by other experts. She has also training in Fingerprint Comparison and undertakes critical findings checks and peer review. Karl Ebejer

Mr Ebejer has a background in biology, chemistry and quality. He works mainly on cases involving analytical chemistry, drugs and alcohol technical defences. Although his particular specialty is trace detection (e.g. drugs on banknotes), Mr Ebejer has an interest in obscure cases, including cases involving issues of quality, scientific methodology and best practice in forensic science. Karl oversees the maintenance of company certification and accreditation to ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025, respectively, and compliance with the Forensic Science Regulator's statutory Code of Practice. Karl has the following qualifications: BSc (Hons) (Biology and Chemistry), Master of Science (Forensic Science), Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. Kerri Allen

Kerri Allen joined Keith Borer Consultants in March 2022 with more than 30 years' experience as a forensic biologist, firstly with the Forensic Science Service at their Huntingdon and London laboratories, followed by 10 years as a forensic consultant for a private consultancy. Her areas of expertise include the identification of body fluids and the interpretation of DNA profiling results, the analysis of textile fibres, hairs and damage to clothing. She has extensive expertise in the evaluation of the findings in a wide range of different case types, including sexual offences and other serious crimes such as murder and assault. Mrs Allen has prepared many hundreds of reports and statements and has given evidence on numerous occasions, often at the Central Criminal Court. Kerri Allen has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Zoology and a Master of Science in Forensic Science. She is a member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. Lee Fagan

Mr Fagan joined the senior management team in 2018 with a focus on business performance and driving company-wide efficiency and effectiveness. He also shares the day-to-day running of KBC and continues to report biology casework. Lee Fagan has been a forensic scientist with Keith Borer Consultants since 1997 and specialises in cases involving body fluids, blood stain patterns and DNA profiling evidence; including advanced probabilistic genotype assessment of complex mixed DNA profiles. In addition to casework, Mr Fagan has responsibility for the development, validation and quality review processes and personnel within our in-house laboratories. Mr Fagan has a first class honours degree in Genetics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is an affiliate member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. He has undertaken basic and advanced courses in blood pattern interpretation as well as training in the use of routine and advanced probabilistic genotyping statistics packages (specifically STRMix). Mr Fagan has authored several hundred reports on body fluid evidence, blood pattern analysis and DNA profiling, and given evidence in courts throughout the United Kingdom. Louie Holbrook

Louie Holbrook joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2021 as a member of the digital forensics team. He specialises in the interpretation of vehicle tachograph data as well as the extraction and examination of data from mobile telephones and social networking sites. Louie graduated from Newcastle University with a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science. He holds Cellebrite Certified Operator and Cellebrite Certified Physical Analyst certifications.

Louise Floate

Mrs Floate is an expert in handwriting and questioned document evidence and has been a forensic scientist since 1982. She joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2018, having previously worked for the Forensic Science Service (FSS), where she was a Senior Forensic Scientist, and in private practice. Since 1992 Mrs Floate has specialised in the fields of handwriting and document examination. She is a Graduate of the Institute (Society) of Biology. Luke Wilkins

Luke Wilkins is a Digital Forensic Investigator at Keith Borer Consultants, specialising in the forensic examination of computers, including indecent images of children. He has the following qualifications: Master of Engineering (Computer Science). In February 2020, he successfully completed the X-Ways Forensics Course.

Mark Henderson

Mark Henderson graduated from Durham University with a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science in 2012. He is a member of the digital forensics team at Keith Borer Consultants and specialises in the interpretation of tachograph and vehicle telematics data (including GPS). He is a Member of The Institution of Engineering and Technology and has undergone further training covering various aspects of digital forensics, including the following in relation to the calibration and analysis of analogue and digital tachograph recording systems: Digital Tachograph Analysis Drivers' Hours & Road Transport (Working Time) Regulation Mr Henderson has presented to solicitors and barristers around the UK on various topics, including mobile phone examination and cloud computing. Michael Prime

Michael Prime is an approachable and knowledgeable Road Traffic Incident Investigator who joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2016. He has over 25 years' experience of the investigation of serious and fatal road traffic collisions involving many different types of vehicles. He has prepared a great number of reconstruction reports in relation to such incidents and has regularly given evidence as an expert witness in Coroners', Magistrates', Crown and Civil courts. Mr Prime is a keen motorcyclist having been riding for over 35 years and has a particular interest in motorcycle collisions. He is trained to Police advanced level in cars and motorcycles. He holds a City & Guilds Certificate in Collision Investigation and a Certificate of Higher Education (De Montfort University) in Road Collision Investigation. He has been awarded a Licentiateship in Traffic Accident Investigation by the City & Guilds Institute (LCGI) and is a Member of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators (MITAI). Recent feedback from Instructing Counsel highlighted that "Mr Prime was very good at court in explaining concepts to the jury and presenting his evidence."

Mike Appleby

Mike Appleby joined Keith Borer Consultants in January 2011, having built up 30 years of experience as a forensic biologist with the Forensic Science Service, at their Aldermaston, London and Chepstow laboratories. During his time at the Aldermaston laboratory, he was involved in the introduction of many of the early DNA profiling techniques, including Multi-Locus Profiling (MLP), Single-Locus Profiling (SLP), Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis and Low Copy Number (LCN). Mr Appleby also acted as a mentor to other scientists during the introduction of current multiplex-based DNA profiling systems. Mr Appleby has extensive expertise in the investigation of the biological aspects of serious crimes such as rape, assault and murder. This includes the interpretation of body fluid staining (semen, saliva and blood) and assessment of damage to clothing often encountered in violent crime, together with the interpretation of blood patterns (Blood pattern Analysis or BPA) at scenes. He has prepared many hundreds of reports and statements and given evidence on numerous occasions throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as, on several occasions, overseas. Nigel Cook

Nigel Cook joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2014 and primarily works on cases involving video or photographic evidence, including the identification of people, objects or vehicles and the analysis of events or actions. He also undertakes photographic and video work, including post-capture editing and the production of DVDs or still image booklets. Mr Cook's previous employment includes 12 years in the Royal Air Force as a photographic interpreter, carrying out detailed analysis of imagery and producing reports for UK and overseas agencies. He also spent 15 years in police scientific support, working in roles that required the use of photography, specialised light sources and imagery enhancement. Orla Sower

Orla Sower has been a forensic biologist at Keith Borer Consultants since January 2003 and has prepared in excess of 850 reports for courts throughout the United Kingdom, The Republic of Ireland, Bermuda, The Cayman Islands and Gibraltar. She set up and ran KBC's DNA profiling unit for 10 years, is Manager of KBC's laboratory facilities and can carry out laboratory examinations for the presence of blood, semen, saliva and trace DNA. Her areas of expertise include the interpretation of both simple and complex DNA profiling results with the associated review of statistical assessments (both routine and advanced probabilistic genotyping systems), the interpretation of body fluid stains and blood pattern analysis. Typical casework evaluations include consideration of the transfer of body fluids in sexual assault and rape cases, the interpretation of blood patterns on clothing or objects and at crime scenes to determine actions or sequences of events, and issues surrounding direct versus indirect ‘secondary' DNA transfer in all case types, including firearms/drugs cases. Orla Sower has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Industrial Microbiology and a Master of Science Degree in Forensic Science. She is a member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences. Paul Wilson

Paul Wilson brings an international perspective to his work with Keith Borer Consultants having previously worked as a DNA expert in the USA. His casework has expanded at Keith Borer Consultants to include evaluation of a wide range of forensic biological evidence; for example blood pattern analysis, recovery of body fluids in sex and assault cases, and examination of scenes to establish what happened where. He is also an expert in the use of DNA profiling in Criminal Justice Systems throughout the UK, addressing questions such as the significance of the results from complex mixed DNA profiles and secondary transfer issues within the context of the case. Having prepared over a thousand reports, he has a wealth of expertise to bring to your case. Paul has BSc in Biochemistry & Immunology and an MSc in Forensic Science. Remi Ogunbona

Remi Ogunbona, an expert in Cell Site Analysis, became a part of the Durham team in September 2023. His background includes seven years at South Yorkshire Police, where he served as a Communications Data Investigator and Radio Frequency Propagation Survey Technician. During this time, he conducted Cell Site Analysis, authored comprehensive reports, and presented evidence in Crown Court. Mr Ogunbona also provided strategic digital advice for serious offences, including homicide, and contributed to locating high-risk missing individuals. Mr Ogunbona is City and Guilds qualified in Radio Frequency Propagation Surveying, covering both radio and cellular network operations.

Richard Brown

Richard Brown specialises in alcohol, drug and toxicology casework including road Traffic Act cases (drink-drive/drug-drive), illicit drug seizures, analysis for toxicology evidence (blood/urine/breath/saliva testing). He has worked for Keith Borer Consultants since 2002. Mr Brown has a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He is a member of TIAFT (The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists) and UKIAFT (UK & Ireland Association of Forensic Toxicologists).

Richard Wilkinson

Richard Wilkinson specialises in the extraction and examination of data from mobile telephones and other digital devices. He joined Keith Borer Consultants in 2022 and holds a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Computer and Digital Forensics from Teesside University. Prior to working at Keith Borer Consultants, Richard worked for other forensic service providers performing digital forensic examinations. He has completed the bond Solon courtroom Skills and Report Writing courses. Mr Wilkinson can be contacted at our Durham office.

Ross Donnelly

Ross Donnelly is the Digital Team Leader and a Digital Forensic Investigator at Keith Borer Consultants, in addition to being IT Manager. He specialises in computer forensics, social networking (such as Facebook and Twitter) and IP address evidence, and has prepared over 300 reports, predominantly for criminal cases but also for tribunals, employment matters, and private work. Mr Donnelly has a First Class Honours degree in Computer Science. He has completed training in computer forensic techniques and software and has the following qualifications from the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists: Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) Certified Advanced Windows Forensic Examiner (CAWFE) Certified Mobile Device Examiner (ICMDE) He has completed the Bond Solon Courtroom Skills course and writes about digital forensics on a regular basis. Sarah Morley

Sarah Morley has worked as a forensic scientist with Keith Borer Consultants since 1997 and specialises in alcohol and drugs-related casework. Sarah prepares reports for criminal cases and also receives instructions in civil, family and disciplinary cases. Sarah graduated from the University of Dundee with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology. In 1996 she was awarded an MSc in Forensic Science from the University of Strathclyde. Mrs Morley can be contacted at our Huntingdon office.

Simon Bunter

Simon Bunter specialises in testing the strength and validity of alleged fingerprint ‘identifications'. His expertise also covers how and when items were touched, including fingerprints that were innocently placed 15 years earlier. Mr Bunter has been employed as a Fingerprint Specialist since 1997, initially with North Yorkshire Police as a Fingerprint Expert and latterly with Keith Borer Consultants in an enhanced role as a Forensic Scientist. As a Fingerprint Expert he specialises in the identification of fingerprints and establishing whether errors have occurred. Mr Bunter is experienced in scrutinising the practices and procedures of fingerprint comparisons including the methodology and accuracy of results. As a Forensic Scientist his expertise includes determining how items and surfaces were touched or handled and commenting on the potential age of fingerprints. He regularly writes on the subject. He has had articles published in scientific journals with regard to cognitive bias, placement of prints and the persistence and longevity of fingerprints on different types of surfaces at crime scenes. He has also given several presentations to solicitors, barristers and police Fingerprint Officers on such matters. Mr Bunter has the following qualifications: BSc (Applied Science and Forensic Measurement), Professional Member of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences, a Chartered Forensic Practitioner and Fellow of the Fingerprint Society. Steven Frost is a Cell Site Analysis expert and joined the team in Durham in April 2020, after both police and military service. Mr Frost's previous employment includes 12 years in the Royal Corps of Signals as a Radio Telegraphist and 23 years service with Durham Constabulary, qualifying as a Detective Constable and a Radio Frequency Propagation Survey Technician (College of Policing), following this up with Wi-Fi, 4G and call obfuscation techniques. Mr Frost joined Keith Borer Consultants from North Yorkshire Police where he was employed as the Senior Radio Frequency Propagation Survey Technician and Digital Media Investigator. Whilst with North Yorkshire Police, he regularly undertook Cell Site Analysis work, produced high-quality reports and presented evidence at Crown Court. He also provided strategic digital advice on the most serious offences of homicide and cold case reviews. Mr Frost holds a City and Guilds qualification in Radio Frequency Propagation Survey.
