The Ackerley Lab focuses on discovery, characterisation, engineering and application of useful bacterial enzymes and development of synthetic biology solutions to generate novel antibiotics and other bioactive molecules. We apply directed evolution to improve desirable activities and tailor enzymes for various biotechnological applications... We have a strong interest in metagenomic biodiscovery of valuable enzymes and drugs from the unculturable bacterial communities present in diverse environmental samples; and in developing screens for novel drug candidates.
