Joachim Louw

Job Titles:

John Sayer

Job Titles:
  • Associate Director

Matt Redfern

Job Titles:
  • Senior Engineer
Matt Redfern has taken an unconventional route to becoming a Senior Engineer. His Engineering apprenticeship began when he joined SLR Consulting Ltd (an Environmental Engineering company in Bradford-on-Avon) as a trainee CAD technician. He quickly worked his way up through the ranks to become a Senior Technician and CAD Manager for the company. Seeking bigger challenges and wanting to expand his Engineering knowledge, Matt left SLR and joined the infrastructure team at Buro Happold Consulting Engineers in Bath. While there he gained a wealth of experience working on projects of all scales, from small UK projects to multi-billion-pound city scale projects in the Middle East. Matt has worked across a wide range of sectors, including Aviation, Education, Sports, Commercial, Cultural, Healthcare and Residential, often taking the lead role for the infrastructure team and building a wide appreciation of all aspects of Civil Engineering. Previous projects have included Downtown Doha (the complete redevelopment of the centre of the capital city of Qatar), Olaya Metro Station in Riyadh and the re-development of the Compton and Edrich stands at Lords Cricket ground. More recently Matt worked as part of a large multi discipline team helping to deliver the detailed design for Everton Football Clubs new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock in Liverpool. Having gained a wealth of experience, he was the first in the team to achieve EngTech status with the ICE and later followed this up by becoming an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) through the experience route. He has since helped other Engineering Technicians achieve EngTech in a mentoring role. Matt has developed a keen interest in sustainable drainage design and has undertaken training and further research in this area to help expand his knowledge. In August 2021, after 14 years at BuroHappold, the opportunity to join the small but rapidly expanding EirEng team in Bath, and head up the Civils team there, was too good an opportunity to miss. Since joining EirEng Matt has been actively assisting Eoghan Deasy (Civils Directors) based in Dublin to develop the EirEng civils team in Bath. As part of his new position Matt has been assisting John Sayer to develop in house software capability and processes across the company to ensure EirEng remain at the cutting edge of Civils design.

Michael Hickey

Job Titles:
  • Associate Director
  • Senior Engineer
Michael Hickey is a Senior Engineer at EirEng and can be considered the prodigal son of EirEng. He joined the company as a graduate engineer at its infancy after completing an Honours Bachelor degree and Masters in Structural Engineering with Architecture from University College Dublin in 2012. He quickly built up an invaluable experience working on a wide range of projects from local residential extensions to large scale logistics complexes in the Middle East. One of his key highlights during this period was his input into the structural design of the Tesco Extra store in Dundalk which at the time was one of the country's largest retail stores. After approximately 2 years at EirEng Michael moved from Dublin to Bath where he joined BuroHappold at their headquarters. He was involved in some of their prestigious projects including the London Olympic Stadium Transformation, the Museum of The Future Dubai, McArthurGlen Ashford Designer Outlet Expansion, and the Millbrook Park Phase 6 development. He also worked closely with software developers on the creation of cutting-edge computational design tools. These were key in the development of the $1.2Bn Olaya Metro Station scheme which formed the centrepiece of Saudi Arabia's largest infrastructure project and a project which Michael was very involved in. As part of the project Michael moved to Riyadh where he aided in the management of the local structural team and dealt with the onsite delivery of some of the firm's Middle Eastern projects. On his return to the UK, he continued working on site and took a yearlong secondment to Skanska, where he was key in developing on-site solutions to the historically sensitive Battersea Power Station Grade II listed structure. But Michael couldn't stay away and in 2019 he re-joined the EirEng team and assisted in establishing the UK office in Bath. He has brought the concept of strong collaboration with him, and it is this close collaboration with architects, project managers and contractors, that has been pivotal in the successful delivery of his projects since his return. Michael is now back in Dublin and is aspiring to avoid the EirEng tradition of jumping in the sea during the company's annual Christmas swim.

Terry Sheehan

Job Titles:
  • Consultant
  • Director
Terry Sheehan was elected to the role of Managing Director of EirEng on its formation in 2011. In line with the founding principles this role is for ten years but due to the global pandemic, Terry agreed to extend his term until May 2021 to provide continuity when he then handed over the baton to Jeremy Lamb who became EirEng's second Managing Director. Terry reverted to the role of Director and to Consultant in 2024 where he continues to provide expert and economical design solutions to a wide range of existing and new clients. Terry graduated with a 1 st Class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering from University College Cork in 1984. After working around the recession hit Ireland for a period of 12 months, he took up an opportunity to move to New York on a year's contract in the Structural Design Department of New York City Transit Authority. It was here that his interest in sustainability by rehabilitating and altering existing structures in a sensitive manner began. On his return to Ireland in 1986 Terry began work under the direction of the late Michael Punch in his Limerick Office later moving to Dublin to set up their Structural Engineering Offering there. This relationship was interrupted twice when he expanded his understanding of site issues and their dependence on good design during two periods spent as a resident Engineer. Terry added to his qualifications and experience by adding a Diploma in Management and Masters in Structural Engineering, both from Trinity College in the early 1990's. He also was elected a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Structural Engineers and Engineers Ireland in that period and was later elected a Fellow of Engineers Ireland. He served on the Masonry Panel for the NSAI, headed the structures Sub-committee of the ACEI and also served two terms on the ACEI Executive Board. Terry has a strong belief of the important role that Engineers play in society and through numerous collaborations with Architects that practise the principles of Integrated Design has been lucky to work on a number of High Profile Award-Winning Buildings such as Limerick County Council Offices, Cork, Offaly and Kilmallock Civic Offices, Tullamore Hospital and SAP Offices in Galway. Over a period of over 30 years he has worked on the full range of building and civils engineering projects of varying type and scale. These range from residential and mixed use developments; to healthcare and residential projects; civil and marine infrastructure to conservation and small scale projects. His work on sustainable design has led to the repurposing of numerous buildings including listed buildings from industrial or commercial use to residential use. In 2011 Terry decided, with a number of like-minded colleagues, to set up EirEng Consulting Engineers to bring back the traditional level and type of service that is more appropriate to the needs of clients. In tandem with this it was decided to embrace the available cutting edge design tools and the associated technology to provide simple and cost effective solutions to clients on a limited budget. Projects of all types and size are approached with the same enthusiasm and detail and through his involvement, Terry brings a wealth of construction experience to bear. Terry and his colleagues identified the importance of logistics at the start of the new century and have built up a wealth of experience with blue chip clients client all over the world to a level where they are seen as one of the leading Civil/Structural Engineers operating in the UK and Ireland in this area and in particular in automated and temperature-controlled projects. When not working as an engineer, Terry has been involved with local sports clubs in a mentoring capacity and was involved with Cuala GAA club for many years before he brought two rugby teams in Seapoint Rugby Club through the development to adult rugby over a period of 18 years. He is a regular all year sea swimmer and can also be found in his garden hideaway working on his latest woodworking project.
