Denis Khazan - CTO

An experienced technology executive with 20+ years in SaaS product development, Denis oversees software development and IT operations and is responsible for building and guiding our technology team. He works closely with our company leadership to ensure the delivery of innovative, customer-focused solutions and products. Prior to joining Teaching Strategies, Denis spent 8 years at Regent Education leading the development of a market disruptive product suite that enables the delivery of financial aid to students in a highly automated and scalable way. As Regent's Chief Technology Officer, Denis was responsible for establishing the company's technical vision and overseeing all aspects of Regent's SaaS product development and IT Operations. He provided leadership, technical direction, and design guidance to product development teams. He was also a thought leader and subject matter expert for financial aid process automation to Regent, its customers, and its investors. Denis also spent nearly a decade in technology consulting-providing custom software development and advising services across a number of industries, including insurance, healthcare, telecommunications, and the oil industry. He worked to deliver cutting-edge technology solutions for a number of Fortune 500 companies and industry leaders, such as ExxonMobil, AmerisourceBergen, Verizon, Johns Hopkins, and W.R. Grace. Although Denis spent much of his career working in education, he became even more interested and involved in early childhood education when his two children were born prematurely in 2007. Heather brings to Teaching Strategies a unique combination of finance expertise and a passion for education. She started her career in investment banking, focused on supporting clients in the education industry. She then spent several years in private equity-investing in rapidly growing education and tech-enabled services businesses and working alongside management teams to pursue strategic initiatives. Prior to joining Teaching Strategies, Heather worked at a strategy consulting firm where she helped clients find new avenues for growth and improve operational efficiency. Heather holds a B.B.A with a concentration in Accounting from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan and an M.B.A from Harvard Business School. Heather has long had a passion for advancing education equity and a specific interest in leveraging technology to improve educational outcomes and the life prospects of children. Scott oversees operations at Teaching Strategies, including the areas of customer success, support & technical services, logistics, and business information systems. Scott has over 25 years of operational experience concentrated in the education industry. In addition to early learning at Teaching Strategies, Scott's education sector experience spans K-12 and higher education levels. Prior to Teaching Strategies, Scott was with K12 Inc. for more than 10 years, occupying several positions until his role as Senior Vice President. In this position, he headed the operations group and held a variety of leadership roles in areas including enrollment operations, program management, process improvement, and the classroom products business line. In his experience with higher education, Scott was a vice president with Delta Career Education Corporation, where he led the expansion of its commercial driver's license (CDL) offering as it more than tripled in size. He also drove process improvement projects informed by data analysis to more effectively acquire and serve its students. In addition to his experience in the education industry, Scott was most notably the CEO of Propane Taxi-a propane tank delivery service-where he oversaw the general management of the company and led it through a business transformation culminating in a successful sale of the company. Earlier in his career, Scott also held operationally focused roles at America Online, Diamond Technology Partners, and KPMG. Scott holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.B.A. from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. As a son of two public school teachers, Scott's pull towards education was inevitable. Scott leads Teaching Strategies corporate development efforts, which includes partnership development, inorganic growth activities, and international strategy work. Scott brings over 20 years of experience to his role, ranging from public policy, business development, product, marketing and corporate and strategic finance. He has served in government, nonprofit, startup and senior executive roles in organizations across the education sector, including both early learning, K-12 and higher education and workforce development. He also has extensive experience leading international strategy efforts and spent two years living as a volunteer in Brazil. Prior to joining Teaching Strategies, Scott spent six years with Strada Education Network, a leading education nonprofit organization focused on connecting education to the workforce, where he eventually served as Chief Strategy and Commercial Officer, leading business development, product, and marketing functions for a collection of wholly owned affiliates. Scott's professional experience includes several years with education technology startups, both as an investor (through Strada) and as an executive in a venture-financed EdTech startup. He also spent five years working for the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, where he successfully led major efforts to reform federal financial aid and federal career and technical education programs. While there, he also participated in the reauthorization of significant legislation impacting K-12 education, higher education and workforce programs, individuals with disabilities education (IDEA), and the Head Start program. Scott holds both BA and MA degrees from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
