Adam Tinsley

Adam has nearly 20 years' experience in professional archaeology in Britain. After starting as a commercial field archaeologist he graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2001 with a First Class BA in Archaeology and Prehistory, followed by an MA in European Prehistory at the University of Wales, Cardiff, and then undertook research into middle Neolithic pottery at Sheffield University, gaining his PhD in 2013. Adam is an experienced archaeologist, having worked at multiple commercial companies including PCA, MOLAS, and ARCUS, and then as a Project Officer at our Lancaster office. His portfolio as a project manager includes a large landscape project at Newark, medieval excavations at Carlisle Cathedral and post-medieval and industrial sites near Manchester. He has undertaken post-excavation work, including specialist analysis and report production relating to prehistoric pottery, and has contributed to several peer review articles in this capacity. Adam is in the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIfA) and a member of both the Prehistoric Society and Prehistoric Ceramic Research Group.

Alan Lupton

Alan has over 30 years' experience in professional archaeology in the UK and abroad and is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA). He graduated in 1986 with a BA (Hons) in Ancient Mediterranean Studies from Bristol University, gained an MA (distinction) in 1988 at the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, and a PhD from Cambridge University in 1995. Alan worked for Oxford Archaeology (OA) between 1995-7 and re-joined the company in 2001 working in our Lancaster office. He has managed a wide range of archaeological projects and has particular experience in the management of complex mitigation schemes within large-scale infrastructure works. Since 2003, Alan has been the Operations Manager in Lancaster, is part of the Regional Management Team and also the Senior Management Team for OA. In his current role, he is responsible for fieldwork in the Lancaster office, overseeing quality and compliance across projects.

Alison de Turberville

Alison holds a BA in Archaeology from the University of York and an MA in Research in Archaeology from the University of Reading. She has been with the buildings department at our Oxford office since 2006. In this time she has carried out many archaeological surveys along with heritage statements and impact assessments on a wide variety of structures. These include royal palaces, barracks, castles and bridges as well as smaller structures like cottages and outbuildings. She has an interest in bricks and brick structures. Alison also undertakes some post-excavation work on building materials, particularly bricks and architectural stonework.

Alison MacDonald

Alison has had a connection with Oxford Archaeology for over 30 years. She worked for Oxford Archaeology on the Eynsham Abbey site in the summer of 1990 before embarking on her doctoral research. In the late 1990s and 2000s she organised placements at Oxford Archaeology for students on the Professional Archaeology programme at Oxford University Department for Continuing Education (OUDCE). She is currently Assistant Director at OUDCE, with responsibility for the Department's undergraduate and postgraduate award-bearing programmes and accredited short courses. She teaches on a number of archaeology courses and supervises DPhil students. Her fieldwork has been in central Italy and her research interests include Roman landscape archaeology, Roman urban life, and individuality and expression of identity in the Roman world.

Andrew Greef

Andy has worked in commercial archaeology since 2007 after graduating from the University of York with a BA in Archaeology. He has a diverse range of experience, having worked for a number of other British companies before joining Oxford Archaeology in 2012. Whilst he has experience directing sites of all periods, Andy has a particular interest in Late Iron Age and Roman archaeology having excavated significant sites of these periods at Grange Paddocks, Bishops Stortford (Hertfordshire) and Tye Green, Cressing (Essex). Andy also has significant experience directing medieval and post-medieval excavations in urban settings including Huntingdon, Cambridge and Norwich. As a Senior Project Manager, Andy is responsible for delivering projects to high standards from conception to completion, liaising with a wide variety of stakeholders (including clients, consultants, curators, contractors, local communities and the media). Andy's portfolio of major fieldwork projects includes large-scale mixed use developments such as the Wellcome Genome Campus expansion, Hinxton (Cambridgeshire), and major infrastructure schemes such as those for Anglian Water's Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA). As Training Manager at our Cambridge office, Andy oversees the training and progression of all fieldwork staff from Graduate Trainee to Supervisor level.

Andy Phelps

Andy has worked as a commercial field archaeologist for over twenty years, joining OA in 2013 where he now leads the historic buildings and landscapes fieldwork teams for our Lancaster office, and coordinates our geomatics provision for our core excavation activities. He is a skilled surveyor, experienced in photogrammetry, UAV survey, laser scanning and other cutting edge data collection techniques and their application to the recording of a broad range of historic buildings and landscapes. Typical project work includes building and landscape surveys, heritage and condition assessments and contributing to conservation management plans on a wide spectrum of building and landscape types. His interests are as diverse as his workload; however, he has a particular focus on vernacular structures, buildings conservation practice and a fascination in upland landscapes. He holds a BA in Archaeology, an MA in Buildings Archaeology, and a Certificate of Higher Education in Historic Building Conservation.

Anne-Laure Bollen

Anni Byard

Anni graduated with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology from the University of Liverpool in 2002 then spent several years in commercial archaeology as a field supervisor and project officer on large linear projects across southern Britain. In 2008, she joined the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme as Finds Liaison Officer for Oxfordshire and West Berkshire, during which time she recorded over 17,000 mostly metal artefacts and completed an MSc in Landscape Archaeology at the University of Oxford. Anni left the PAS in 2019 to undertake a PhD with the University of Leicester and the Ashmolean Museum, investigating the Iron Age to Roman transition in Britain through coin hoarding. A Project Officer for Oxford Archaeology since 2020, Anni specialises in metalwork and coins of all periods and has contributed to many reports and publications spanning the Bronze Age to post-medieval periods. Anni is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA).

Antony Dickson

Antony has worked in archaeology since the early 1990s and has a BA in Archaeology and Prehistory and an MA in Landscape Archaeology from Sheffield University. He worked on a variety of commercial projects across the north of England before joining Oxford Archaeology in 2010 as a Project Officer, Post-excavation. Antony is a lithic specialist and has undertaken the analysis of assemblages from Oxford Archaeology excavations including Stainton West, Carlisle, Cumbria and Ronaldsway Airport, Isle of Man. He has research interests in Mesolithic and Neolithic lithic assemblages from north-west Britain. He also specialises in wetland archaeology and has participated in several evaluations and excavations and their subsequent post-excavation. He was a lead archaeologist on the Windy Harbour to Skippool road improvement scheme in North Lancashire and is currently involved in the post-excavation of the project.

Becky Peacock

Becky has worked for Oxford Archaeology as a Project Officer since 2013. She has been the Oxford Regional Health, Safety and Environment Advisor since 2021 and has been a Health and Safety Advisor since 2020. She is the Lead Mental Health First Aider for Oxford Archaeology's Oxford office and sits on the Wellbeing Committee. She divides her time between running fieldwork projects and her health and safety roles and also organises the outreach activities for the Oxford office. She lead the multiple fieldwork phases at Innsworth and Twigwoth, Gloucestershire, consisting largely of Iron Age and Roman settlements from 2018 to 2022. Becky lead the Outreach programme for the British Archaeology Award winning Westgate Oxford development, which involved organising the popular Pop Up Museum, schools visits, open days and website. She has presented papers about the success of the Pop Up Museum as a public engagement activity at a number of organisations including the annual conference of the European Association of Archaeology in Maastricht. She is an Associate (ACIfA) of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists.

Ben Ford

Ben graduated from Reading University in 1990 with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology. He joined Oxford Archaeology in 1996, and serves as a Senior Project Manager and Term Contract Manager for the Historic Royal Palaces. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA). Ben has particular strengths in the management, organisation, execution and delivery of large and medium scale excavation and post-excavation projects on urban, and built environment sites where archaeological work has to dovetail with that of demolition/remediation and construction contractors. He has a good understanding of how archaeology relates to, and affects, other disciplines, and can communicate well with all project stakeholders, such as engineers, architects, local authorities, and English Heritage. His many years in the profession allow him to be highly versatile, maintain a clear focus on the implications of time and budgetary constraints, and deliver high quality from a project's conception to its completion.

Benjamin Brown

Ben has worked in commercial archaeology for over 10 years, specialising in Geomatics for most of that time. His work covers CAD and GIS data processing, 3D modelling and photogrammetry, and field survey. He has aided in developing several of the survey workflows at Oxford Archaeology and is a qualified UAV pilot, with over 7 years' experience of flying drones. Prior to joining Oxford Archaeology, Ben completed a BA in Archaeology at the University of Southampton, followed by an MA in Palaeolithic Archaeology and Human Origins, then completed a DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford. He has worked on a wide variety of commercial sites and projects, across the UK and Europe, including Croatia, Norway and Spain. His areas of interest include 3D reconstruction and modelling of archaeological landscapes and objects, the Lower & Middle Palaeolithic periods and their lithic tool technologies, GIS data analysis and mobile laser scanning.

Carl Champness

Carl has over 24 years' experience as an archaeologist and has worked at Oxford Archaeology since 2004. As a Senior Project Manager, he specialises in the management of complex wetland investigations, urban excavations and infrastructure projects like HS2. He is an experienced geoarchaeologist and has led several nationally important early prehistoric wetland sites in London, Carlisle, Bexhill and Newark. His interests lie in the prospection of buried early prehistoric wetland sites and the transition of hunter-gatherers to early farmers. He has also been involved in several long-term Historic England's research projects on the impacts of modern farming techniques on buried archaeology (COSMIC, NHPP) and has contributed to national guidance papers on Geoarchaeology, Deposit Modelling and the Management of lithic Scatters. Carl holds a BA (Hons) from University of Wales, Lampeter, and a MSc in geoarchaeology from Reading. He actively promotes archaeological outreach through public talks, articles, open days, community digs, and through the media with books, TV and radio. Carl is an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIfA).

Carlotta Marchetto

Carlotta graduated from University of Roma Tre in 2010 with an MA in Archaeology. She started her archaeological career in Italy and then, in 2015, moved to UK to work for the Museum of London (MOLA). Carlotta joined our Cambridge office in 2017 and worked on site for a year before transferring to the Finds Department where she enrolled in the Oxford Archaeology specialist training scheme in Iron Age pottery. Having successfully completed the scheme she now works primarily as an Iron Age pottery specialist, writing client reports and contributing to publications. She also analyses and reports on Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery assemblages. As a Project Officer, Carlotta is responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the Finds Department, liaising with both office and field staff and external specialists. As an Iron Age pottery specialist, she has analysed and reported on numerous assemblages in East Anglia and, her research interests range from the Late Bronze Age to the transitional Late Iron Age-Early Roman period. Carlotta is a member of the Prehistoric Ceramics Research Group.

Carole Fletcher

Carole began her archaeological career in 1984, when she started as a volunteer excavator at Laugharne Castle, and Haverfordwest Priory, a site she returned to every summer for nearly 10 years. An HND in practical Archaeology at Bournemouth followed, and later, a BA (Hons) in Archaeology at Leicester. Excavation work eventually brought Carole to what was then the Cambridgeshire County Council Archaeological Field Unit on a three-month contract back in 1994. Twenty-nine years later, after various company name changes and numerous different roles, which included excavator, illustrator, finds supervisor and medieval pottery specialist, she is now Finds and Archives Manager at ourCambridge office.

Chris Gosden

Chris is Chair of European Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Oxford. His research interests include anthropology and archaeology, archaeology and colonialism, archaeology and intelligence, Iron Age Britain, Turkmenistan, and Papua New Guinea. He is currently excavating the site of Marcham (with Gary Lock) - a late Iron and Romano-British site with large religious structures which throws light on ritual and belief before and during the Romano-British period. He is co-director (with Mike O'Hanlon) of the Relational Museum Project examining the sets of connections between people and objects which make up the Pitt Rivers Museum. He is also working on a book on archaeology and intelligence.

Clemency Cooper

As Oxford Archaeology's Community Archaeology Manager, Clemency leads all public engagement initiatives across Oxford Archaeology involving volunteers, community groups, educational institutions and the wider public. This includes programmes to realise the social value of development-led archaeological investigations, as well as developing grant-funded partnership projects.

Dan Poore - COO

Dan has worked for Oxford Archaeology since 1992, starting as a volunteer and working his way up the ranks of the fieldwork team, with a focus on urban archaeology. He has extensive experience of project management and the pursuit of new contracts, gained from his years as a Senior Project Manager and then as head of the Oxford Archaeology Fieldwork and Contracts teams at our Oxford office. As COO, he is responsible for operations company-wide, ensuring quality and compliance across all Oxford Archaeology projects, including our ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 certification. Dan leads on OA's key infrastructure projects and partnerships, particularly the Oxford-Cotswold Archaeology JV. Dan is responsible for Health, Safety and the Environment and is a Technical Member of the Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH). He also leads on training. He is a Director of the Federation of Archaeological Managers and Employers (FAME), a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA), and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).

Dan Sykes

Dan has worked in commercial archaeology since 1994 and first joined Oxford Archaeology in 1996 to work on the Swindon-Gloucester road scheme, the first of many infrastructure jobs he has been involved with for Oxford Archaeology, such as CTRL(HS1), HS2, The Bexhill-Hastings Bypass and the St Brieux road scheme in Brittany. Dan also site managed the recent Dorset VIP scheme and has been a mainly field-based Project Officer since the mid 2000s. Dan has been fortunate to work on several Historic Palace projects at both Hampton Court Palace and the Tower of London as well as working along the Thames at Somerset House, Greenwich Naval Hospital and The Royal Arsenal, Woolwich. He has also been involved in various urban excavations such as Stafford, Reading, Oxford and Bristol and has volunteered on research projects varying from prehistoric monuments on Tiree, Inner Hebrides to Colonial era Fortifications on St.Lucia in the Caribbean.

David Score

David has worked as a professional archaeologist for Oxford Archaeology since graduating from Reading University in 1996 with a first class honours degree in Archaeology. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA). David has considerable project management experience in fieldwork, post-excavation and consultancy within a commercial environment has managed a portfolio of diverse projects including one of the largest urban regeneration developments in the country and a number of significant infrastructure schemes. In his role as Head of Fieldwork David oversees the managers and projects undertaken by the Fieldwork Department and is responsible for the fieldwork programme, staff recruitment, deployment, training and reporting.

Deirdre Forde

Deirdre has a BA in Archaeology from University College, Cork, and an MA in Buildings Archaeology from the University of York. She has worked for the Buildings Department since 2008 and has been a Project Manager since 2021. Since joining Oxford Archaeology, she has carried out detailed archaeological surveys of a variety of buildings from many phases. Deirdre specialises in institutional architecture with a specific focus on prisons. She is also involved in the research and recording of 20th-century buildings and has a keen interest in their increasing relevance as part of the historic environment. A key part of Deirdre's role is assessing the significance of heritage assets, and the impact of potential development on them for the purposes of informing the planning process. She has contributed to two of Oxford Archaeology's publications; Oxford Castle and Torre Abbey, as well as a study in prison and penology, The Carceral Network in Ireland, published by Palgrave Macmillan.

Denise Druce

Denise is one of a team of in-house environmental archaeologists who has worked at our Lancaster since 2003. Denise began her career in environmental archaeology as a palynologist but can now add the identification of charred plant remains, charcoal, waterlogged plant remains, and wood to her suite of specialist skills. She also contributes to geoarchaeological investigations and interpretation when required. Prior to joining Oxford Archaeology, Denise worked as an Environmental Archaeology Assistant for CADW (Welsh Historic Monuments) and for the Palaeoenvironmental Research Centre, Lampeter University (now University of St David's). Denise's academic achievements include obtaining a PhD from Bristol University in 2001, which focused on Mesolithic to Romano British environmental change of the Severn Estuary and being awarded a first-class degree in Environment and Archaeology at University of Wales, Lampeter, in 1996. Denise's main area of interest is in early prehistoric environments and plant resource use.

Elizabeth Popescu

Liz oversees the post-excavation research and publications function at our Cambridge office. She has worked for Oxford Archaeology (and its predecessor) for twenty years. Her job is to manage all aspects of post-excavation work, including the finds, environmental and graphics teams. She also edits all of the academic and popular publications produced by the Cambridge team, ensuring that the highest academic standards are maintained and that projects are delivered on time to clients. Having graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Ancient History and Archaeology, she also has a PhD from the University of East Anglia. Liz has considerable experience in managing complex projects and specialises in urban Late Saxon and medieval archaeology, with particular interests in castle and cemetery studies.

Elizabeth Stafford

Elizabeth has a professional career spanning over 25 years in field, environmental archaeology, geoarchaeology, post-excavation analysis and project management. She has a BA (Hons) degree in Archaeology from the University of Wales College of Cardiff and an MSc in Geoarchaeology from the University of Reading. Having trained under Profs. J.G. Evans and M.G Bell, she specialises in geoarchaeology, predictive deposit modelling and malacology. Elizabeth joined OA in 1996, having previously worked for archaeological organisations in Northeast England, the highlight of which was intertidal fieldwork on the Hartlepool submerged forest (Tees Archaeology). Whilst working for OA she has been involved in both research and developer-funded projects across the South, the Midlands, East Anglia, Northern England, France, and the Netherlands. She has worked on a range of multiperiod sites, with expertise in the Thames Valley, Greater London, Kent and Essex. She has extensive experience in the design and implementation of geoarchaeological investigations with deposit modelling on large infrastructure projects such as High Speed 1, High Speed 2, Heathrow Terminal 5, Crossrail, Thameslink, the Lower Thames Crossing and London Gateway Port. She has a keen interest in natural history, wetland archaeology, coastal processes, and Quaternary climate change, much inspired from working as a student at Flag Fen. Elizabeth is an advocate of holistic and integrated approaches to archaeological and landscape investigation in which she has published extensively and contributed to various Historic England guidelines. She has had a long-standing involvement with Palaeolithic geoarchaeology, predominantly through her work in the Lower Thames in Kent (Ebbsfleet) and Essex (Purfleet). In 2016, she designed and managed, on behalf of Historic England, the production of the award-winning monograph, Lost Landscapes of Palaeolithic Britain. Collaborating with a team of lead academics, the book sought to synthesise and disseminate to the wider archaeological community the results of £8 million of funding from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF). Elizabeth has led the in-house Geoarchaeology Team at OA since its establishment in 2003, a specialist hub that carries out borehole and geophysical surveys, LiDAR interpretation, sediment analysis, deposit modelling, GIS analysis and integrated landscape syntheses, from site to regional scale.

Emily Abrehart

Emily graduated in 2014 from the University of Leicester with a BSc in Archaeology and came straight to work for Oxford Archaeology as a Graduate Trainee. Since then she has worked her way up through the ranks, becoming a Fieldwork Project Officer in March 2022. In the last few years she has overseen projects from multiple periods including a Romano-British site at Alconbury Airfield and a Bronze Age settlement on the outskirts of Cambridge. Emily was a site surveyor for many years and still likes to keep up to date with the geomatics processes. She is particularly interested in historic building recording and is currently receiving some training in this area.

Fraser Brown

Fraser has been working in British archaeology since the late 1980s and graduated with a BA in Archaeology and Prehistory from Sheffield University in 1995. He joined Oxford Archaeology in 1998 and is Regional Manager for our Lancaster office. Fraser is also a qualified Health and Safety Advisor and helps co-ordinate and implement health and safety policy. He has considerable project management experience, overseeing projects, in both rural and urban environments, from tender through to publication. He has routinely undertaken work for the building construction, mineral extraction, transport and energy sectors, and has particular experience of large-scale infrastructure projects, including road schemes, long-distance pipelines and airports. Fraser has a keen interest in British prehistory, especially the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods and has expertise in lithic sites and waterlogged environments. Digital recording techniques and geospatial analyses are also areas of interest. Notable recent projects include the Asselby to Pannal Natural Gas Pipeline, the Isle of Man Airport Runway End Safety Area project, Carlisle Northern Development Route, the A487 Caernarfon to Bontnewydd Bypass, and the A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool Bypass.

Gerry Thacker

Gerry joined Oxford Archaeology as an Archaeologist in 2000, after graduating from the University of Reading. Gerry spent the next decade or so excavating sites as an Assistant Supervisor, Supervisor and Project Officer before gaining promotion to Senior Project Manager in early 2013. Since then, he has managed a diverse range of projects from Palaeolithic flint sites to industrial complexes via work for the Oxford Colleges, but specialises in large scale rural sites of prehistoric and Roman date. Gerry's main responsibilities include the management of field work projects and liaison with clients, consultants, field staff, contractors, and the media. He also undertakes the post-excavation analysis of sites and has worked extensively in the Contracts Department. Additionally, Gerry has responsibility for overseeing the fieldwork training programmes at the Oxford office, managing staff progression through the Graduate Trainee to Supervisor (GT2SUP) programmes. Gerry is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA) and holds a Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) qualification.

Gill Andrews

Gill has been a cultural heritage consultant for over 35 years working in both commercial and charity environments.  She has a comprehensive knowledge of the heritage sector and has advised on the historic environment aspects of a number of major national infrastructure projects including Heathrow Terminal 5 and London Gateway Port, Essex. She is skilled at project planning and has been an expert advisor, mentor and monitor for the National Lottery Heritage Fund for over 20 years, supporting the development and delivery of major capital projects. She has extensive experience of governance and business planning, having undertaken strategic planning reviews and option studies for a wide variety of organisations including Historic England and Cadw. She has served on the boards of a number of heritage and arts bodies, including as President of the Society of Antiquaries of London from 2014-18.

Granville Laws

Granville has been a full-time member of staff at Oxford Archaeology since 1989 and has a wealth of fieldwork experience gained from many years of working on and running sites of all periods from small watching briefs and evaluations to major excavations. Although at home with all types of archaeology Granville has a special interest in Neolithic and Bronze Age sites. In his current role as Assistant to the Head of Fieldwork his responsibilities include staff recruitment, organisation of training, maintaining the staff deployment programme and logistic tasks such as managing the company's vehicle fleet.

Hannah Pighills

Hayley Foster

Hayley joined Oxford Archaeology's Cambridge office in 2017 as our Zooarchaeologist. Hayley graduated with a BA in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (USA), an MA in Osteoarchaeology from University of Southampton and a PhD from the University of Exeter. Helena Hamerow

Ian Smith

Ian is a member of the Professional Zooarchaeology Group, and his current role and area of expertise is to assess, analyse, interpret, and report on vertebrate (mainly mammal and bird) bone assemblages. Ian was first involved in archaeology in 1985 and subsequently went on to gain a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Prehistory (1986-9) and a Masters (MSc) in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoeconomy (specialising in animal bones) from Sheffield University (1995-6). He was employed in Chester as an Environmental Archaeologist (again specialising in bones) for twelve years and has been a Project Officer at our Lancaster since 2013. He has also undertaken research on cave faunas of north-west England and has analysed and reported on animal bone assemblages from Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

James Fairbairn

James joined Oxford Archaeology in 2005, and has been a Project Officer since 2013. James leads evaluations and excavations on site. He also specialises Historic Building recording. Drawing on a former career as a professional photographer, James does a great deal of photographic work, including photogrammetry, finds and publication photographs. James makes a major contribution to community archaeology projects at our Cambridge office. Some major projects have included a large Heritage Lottery funded community excavation of a Roman villa at Itter Cresent, Peterborough, and also excavation of a Spitfire from Holme Fen in conjunction with the MoD's Operation Nightingale.

Jan Wills

Jan's professional career in archaeology started in fieldwork in the midlands and north of England. Moving into local government she managed both curatorial and fieldwork teams, most recently in Gloucestershire as County Archaeologist. For the last 10 years she has worked part time as a consultant on research projects, current sector issues, and organisational reviews. Her trustee and advisory roles have included Chair of the Association of Local Government Archaeologists, trustee of the Council for British Archaeology, Chair of the Institute for Archaeologists, and membership of the Historic England Advisory Committee. She is currently a Trustee of the Heritage Alliance, President of her county archaeology society, a Member of CIfA and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.

Jess Elleray

Jon Gill

Jon has worked in Oxford Archaeology's Oxford office since 1998 and he leads the Historic Buildings Department. Jon is a very experienced buildings archaeologist having investigated a wide range of structures but his particular specialism lies in post-medieval and modern buildings. He holds a BA in Architecture, as well as a Masters Degree in Industrial Archaeology from the Ironbridge Institute. He is also a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA). Jon coordinates the overall department's workload while also managing individual projects and undertaking on-site investigations. He undertakes a wide range of projects, including conservation management plans, impact assessments, environmental statements, large-scale building recording prior to developments, and small-scale assessments to assist in planning applications. While with Oxford Archaeology, Jon has worked on scheduled Cold War sites, Royal Palaces, airfields, industrial complexes, gunpowder factories, grand country houses, and much more humble dwellings.

Julia Meen

Karen Barker

Karen Barker graduated from Cardiff University in 1989 with a BSc (Hons) in Archaeological Conservation. She has worked for various organisations as a digger and as site conservator on sites in Jordan, Sudan and Turkey. Karen was previously a conservator based in the north-east of England providing advice and conservation services to museums and other organisations before joining the Lancaster office in 2019 as Finds, Archives and Environmental Officer Her main area of interest is x-radiography, conservation and finds identification of metal artefacts.

As CEO, Ken is responsible to the Board of Trustees of Oxford Archaeology for the leadership and effective operation of the business as a whole. After graduating in 1986 with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science, Ken worked as a geologist before transferring to archaeology in 1988. Since joining Oxford Archaeology in 1995, Ken has managed a wide range of archaeological projects and has particular experience in the management of complex mitigation schemes within large-scale infrastructure works, development of innovative and cost-effective approaches to archaeological mitigation, implementation of digital recording systems, databases and GIS analysis, and the provision of archaeological planning advice. He is also a qualified Health and Safety Advisor. From 2016-2021, Ken was the Regional Manager in Oxford, responsible for the successful operation of that office. Leigh liaises with project managers, specialists (both internal and external), conservators and landowners to ensure the efficient and effective progress of the finds from excavation through to deposition. Mike has been working in the field of flint analysis since 1994. He has conducted the excavation, analysis and publication of lithics assemblages from Britain, France and Cyprus. He has excavated over 300 in situ lithic scatters/knapping floors and has conducted detailed analysis on several important assemblages of flint, including the Arran Water Ring Main scheme, Scotland, the Dagenham Beam Washlands Scheme, London, Dorset Visual Impact Project, Cross Levels Way, Eastbourne and the Guildford late Upper Palaeolithic site. His current major project which is nearing completion is the full analysis and publication of 480,000 flints from around 280 flint scatters at Bexhill in Sussex, one of Europe's most important preserved early Holocene landscapes. He has presented papers/posters at several conferences, including at the XVII World UISPP congress, Burgos, Spain (2014), at the Mesolithic In Europe, Belgrade, Serbia (2015) and Toulouse, France (2020), at the Paleo 20/20 in London (2016), and at The Unravelling the Palaeolithic, in Southampton (2023). Natasha Dodwell

Natasha graduated with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Prehistory from the University of Sheffield, followed by an MSc in Osteology, Palaeopathology and Funerary Archaeology (University of Bradford). She started her archaeological career at the Museum of London and now has over 30 years of experience working in commercial archaeology. Prior to joining Oxford Archaeology in 2016, Natasha was the senior osteoarchaeologist at the Cambridge Archaeological Unit for 20 years and has an extensive knowledge of the archaeology of Eastern England, particularly of burial archaeology. In her current role, Natasha is responsible for co-ordinating the work programmes in both the Finds and Environmental Departments at Oxford Archaeology's Cambridge office, liaising with specialists within the organisation and externally. She also oversees the post-ex training of staff, specifically junior specialists. With her specialism in osteology Natasha contributes to the grey literature and publications programmes at OA and has a particular interest in cremation practices and Bronze Age and Iron Age funerary archaeology. Patrick Moan

Pat has worked in commercial archaeology since 2008 and holds a BA in Archaeology and Ancient History from Reading University. Paul Chadwick

Paul joined the Trustees in 2020 having retired from a career in professional archaeology. A graduate from the University of Wales (University College Cardiff), after a stint on the digging circuit in the mid 1970s, Paul went into local government, first in North Yorkshire where he created the Sites & Monuments Record for England's largest county and then in Berkshire, where he also developed innovative planning policies that helped form a basis for government planning policy in PPG 16. Since 1991 he has worked in archaeological planning consultancy and was a founding Director of CgMs Consulting. Since retiring Paul has undertaken a study of Roman agricultural landscapes in Midland and southern England and is currently preparing a D. Phil thesis at the University of Oxford on Romano-British rural settlement and farming.

Peter Dearlove

Peter's interest in archaeology began in his teenage years, but he mistakenly chose not to follow it up, instead earning a BSc (Hons) in Psychology at university. It took until he was in his thirties for his first archaeological fieldwork experience in 2011. Eventually he realised that archaeology was something that he could do professionally, and in the summer of 2016, he joined Oxford Archaeology as a Graduate Trainee. In retrospect, Peter came into the profession later than he would have liked, following a number of jobs in finance, politics, and administration in the public and charity sectors. Working his way up through the levels in the field team, Peter's skill set from previous employments put him in a good position when the role of Contracts Officer became vacant. He is now a main point of contact for people needing quotes for archaeological work in the eastern region.

Philip Terry

Phil graduated from the University of Reading in 2003 with a BA in Archaeology before working for the next 14 years in retail distribution and warehousing, in several roles from the shopfloor up to senior management. He returned to Reading in 2017 to complete an MA in Archaeology, focused on prehistory and zooarchaeology. Phil then worked as a field archaeologist, joining Oxford Archaeology's Oxford office in 2019, and spent a considerable amount of time working on the HS2 rail project. In his current role as Logistics and Facilities Manager at the Oxford office of Oxford Archaeology, he uses his experience in stock management to make sure the field team is provisioned for work, and that current regulations are followed to make our workplaces safe.

Rachel Fosberry

Rachel has worked for Oxford Archaeology since 2000 following a career change from pharmaceutical research. As Environmental Manager for Oxford Archaeology's Cambridge office, Rachel is responsible for the running of the sample processing facility at Bourn, site sampling strategies and the co-ordination of the processing and archaeobotany programmes. As an archaeobotanist, Rachel specialises in the identification and interpretation of charred, mineralised and waterlogged plant remains and she has worked on assemblages of all periods from numerous sites in the East of England, resulting in extensive regional knowledge. Rachel has a particular interest in cereal cultivation, processing and brewing and related experimental archaeology. Rachel Newman

Rachel graduated from the University of Durham with a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology and has worked in the North West for 40 years, during that time gaining a wealth of knowledge about the archaeology of the region. She acts as Senior Executive Officer: Research and Publications at the Lancaster office of Oxford Archaeology, in which role she oversees the post-excavation programme from post-excavation assessments through to publications. From its instigation, she has been the Series Editor for the Lancaster Imprints monographs and has overseen the development of the Greater Manchester's Past Revealed series. She also has an overview of community and research projects undertaken by the office. Rachel has a deep commitment to the archaeology of the region, with a specialism in the early medieval period. She acted as period coordinator for this during both the compilation and updating of the North West Regional Archaeological Research Framework, working also as a member of its steering group. She was also a member of the steering group for the Hadrian's Wall Research Framework, and has acted as a committee member for the last three Hadrian's Wall Pilgrimages, and the International Limes Congress, held in Newcastle in 2009, as well as being a member of the Hadrian's Wall Partnership Board Research Delivery Group. Rebecca Nicholson

She holds a D.Phil in Biology and a BA (Hons) in Archaeology & History from the University of York as well as an MA in Environmental Archaeology and Palaeoeconomy from the University of Sheffield. She has previously held academic research posts and has over 100 authored and co-authored publications covering specialisms as diverse as dendrochronology, parasitology and archaeozoology, although her main specialist field is archaeoichthyology. Rebecca is responsible for designing sampling strategies for a wide range of developer-led and research focussed projects and liaising with a range of specialists to ensure high academic standards and an effective outcome for our clients. She is a Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA) and a member of the Association for Environmental Archaeology.

Richard Briant

Richard is an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. His current projects include programmes for mid-career Indian professionals and the Archbishop Tutu Leadership Fellowship Programme. Richard has worked at Oxford University for over 20 years both at the Business School and before that as the administrator of the Department of Materials where he helped set up the University's Science Park at Begbroke. His early professional experience was as a UK civil servant and diplomat. He has also worked in the water industry as an economic consultant and specialist journalist. Richard is an active Friend (and former Chair of Friends) of the Pitt Rivers Museum. Richard brings to Oxford Archaeology broad experience as a Trustee as well as familiarity with practical management in tight financial circumstances.

Richard Brown

Richard has been a professional archaeologist since joining Oxford Archaeology in 1985. As a Fieldwork Senior Project Manager from 2000-2022, Richard specialised in urban and infra-structure projects and has been responsible for managing fieldwork and post-excavation projects including HS1 (Whitehorse Stone, Ebbsfleet International Station, the Southfleet Elephant excavation), the western section of Crossrail (Old Oak Common, Paddington, Tottenham Court Road and Bond St Stations), HS2 (HS2 Central and North Built Heritage for COPA JV), and multiple road-schemes (A120, A5, A421). Richard also has a background in castle/chateau excavation (Chateau de Mayenne, Chateau de Falaise, Windsor Castle, Tower of London) and has overseen work for the Royal Household at Buckingham Palace, St James' Palace, Windsor Castle, Clarence House, Marlborough House and Kensington Palace since 2009. As Head of Contracts and Business Development, Richard leads the tender team at the Oxford office of Oxford Archaeology as well as co-ordinating and overseeing tenders across Oxford Archaeology.

Robert McIntosh

Currently Bob is a field work Project Officer. He joined Oxford Archaeology at the Bexhill excavations in 2013 planning to work here a few months before moving on, and never did. He has predominantly run excavations over the past few years, including sites in Wallingford, Didcot, Northampton and Somerset, and has spent a lot of time working on infrastructure projects. The jobs he has run have provided him with a lot of experience with Roman archaeology, this and anything Napoleonic are his main areas of interest.

Robin Webb

Robin graduated with a BA in Archaeology and Prehistory from the University of Sheffield and has an MA in Archaeological Heritage Management from the University of York. He began his fieldwork experience on a monastic site in Iceland in 2003, and first began working in commercial archaeology in 2005. He has been at Oxford Archaeology since 2012 and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (ACIFA). As a Project Officer, Robin has directed fieldwork projects and written reports and articles on numerous sites in eastern England, including of a Neolithic causewayed enclosure and areas of Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and medieval settlement. With a particular interest in understanding the settings of sites, he has written and been involved in desk-based assessments, heritage management plans and technical notes for environmental statements.

Rosie Fletcher

Rosie holds a BA Hons in Archaeology from the University of Bristol and an MSc and PhD in Palaeoanthropology from the University of Liverpool. She joined OA in 2020 after spending several years in account management and sales and marketing roles within the travel industry. Rosie spent a year in OA's fieldwork team excavating prehistoric and Roman sites in Somerset before joining the Contracts Department. She also has considerable experience overseeing excavations of prehistoric sites in central Africa and is a competent archaeological surveyor. During her time at OA, Rosie has undertaken placements with the Post-Excavation and Lithics Departments and has written numerous WSIs and evaluation and excavation reports.

Sharon Cook

Sharon graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Archaeology from Bournemouth University followed by an MSc in Professional Archaeology at Oxford. She began working at Oxford Archaeology in 2005 as a member of the fieldwork team before moving sideways to become a member of the Environmental team, and eventually one of the Archaeobotanists in the team. She has a particular interest in the Roman period but generally is interested in the interplay between the natural environment and cultivated and managed landscapes. She is a member of the Association of Archaeology.

Simon Blackmore

Simon has worked in the education during his professional career and has experience in Charitable Trusts. He has kept an active interest in Archaeology since he studied it in his undergraduate days. As well as being a Trustee of Oxford Archaeology he is a Trustee of The Vale of the White Horse and Ridgeway Archaeological & Historical Trust. He has also a long association with the Friends of the Ashmolean. His academic interests extend to local history and he is a member of the Oxfordshire Architectural and Historical Society. He sees public benefit and educational outreach as essential aspects of Oxford Archaeology's role in the community.

Stephen Macaulay

Stephen has over 30 years' experience in British, French and North American archaeology. He graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BA in Prehistory and Archaeology and has an MPhil in Archaeological Heritage and Museums from the University of Cambridge. He is a leading proponent of Public Archaeology and has the responsibility for the education and outreach projects across Oxford Archaeology, managing the Oxford Archaeology Outreach service. Stephen has considerable experience in successfully obtaining grant aid for this type of heritage project. He has extensive experience in project management, contracts and the heritage sector in general. Stephen is a Heritage Management and Roman specialist, and continues to pursue research projects in these areas, predominately but not solely in the Eastern Region. Stephen is a full Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (MCIfA), a member of the Council for British Archaeology (East) and sits on the council of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society.

Stephen Rowland

After graduating from York University in 1999 with a BSc in Archaeology and an MSc in Human Palaeoecology, Steve worked mainly in environmental archaeology. In 2005 he joined Oxford Archaeology's Lancaster office, and has managed scores of projects, from backyard watching briefs to major infrastructure, from the Mesolithic to the modern period, and from tender to archive, through fieldwork, assessment, analysis, and publication. Particularly significant projects include post-medieval burial grounds in Hull, Swinton, South Shields, and Darwen, pipelines in East Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, and the North West, road schemes in East Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Cumbria, and a community excavation within the Roman settlement at Maryport, Cumbria.

Steve Lawrence

Steve has experience at many levels of fieldwork, having been employed in professional archaeology since 1994. Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Steve was responsible for the field direction of excavations of several large late Iron Age and Roman settlements. These include two large rural Roman ‘small towns' and a villa complex. Each project was completed over periods of several months with large field teams, and included significant volunteer involvement that had to be managed as part of the excavations. Following fieldwork, Steve had a role in the analysis and publication of each site, and was the lead author for the Higham Ferrers and Thurnham Villa monographs. Steve also has a wide range of project management experience, with notable large projects being the investigation of an important copper works at Swansea, carriage widening around the M25, and the ongoing excavations at Great Western Park, Didcot. Each of these have provided challenging programmes, deadlines, excavation conditions and archaeological remains, which have been successfully managed to provide project delivery to the clients.

Steven Graham

Steve has worked in commercial archaeology since graduating with a BA in Archaeology from the University of Birmingham in 2000. Steve has previously worked for archaeological units such as Birmingham Archaeology, Wessex Archaeology and Pre-Construct Archaeology (PCA) before joining Oxford Archaeology (then CCC AFU) in 2002. Steve has worked extensively in London, the Midlands, Cambridgeshire and East Anglia on a wide variety of site types in both urban and rural locations. In his current role as a Field Project Officer, he oversees excavations on site along with post-excavation work and report writing. Despite all the years of being frozen, scorched or soaked, Steve still enjoys (along with cheesy 80s tunes!) getting covered in mud with field work and takes pleasure in wielding a mattock on large features. Steve is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Archaeologists

Stuart Foreman

Stuart graduated from Durham University in 1990 with a BA (Hons) in Archaeology and Anthropology. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Field Archaeologists (MCIfA) with 33 years professional experience. He joined Oxford Archaeology in 1997 after an early career as a field archaeologist in Essex, Cumbria and elsewhere in the UK. His range of experience includes environmental impact assessments, field surveys, evaluations, excavations and building recording. He has extensive practical experience of designing mitigation and preservation schemes, including codes of construction practice. He is particularly experienced in managing archaeological fieldwork and post-excavation projects on major infrastructure schemes, such as Oxford Archaeology's commitment to High Speed 1 and 2, the A30 Bodmin to Indian Queens Roadscheme, London Gateway Port in the Thames Estuary and the Hinkley Point C Connection Project. Since 2014 he has provided curatorial advice to the Government of Jersey Infrastructure, Housing and Environment team as part of a standing advisory contract.

Stuart Ladd

Stuart has worked as a professional archaeologist since 2009, and joined Oxford Archaeology in 2011. He has an MA in Landscape Archaeology from the University of Bristol, and also a BA in Mathematics and Computer Science from Oxford University. As a Project Officer, Stuart runs larger evaluations and excavations from project setup, through fieldwork and into post-excavation write-up. He also undertakes GPS surveys (including earthworks) and graphics work, including photogrammetric production of 3D models. Some of his major projects include excavation of a Saxon cemetery in Cherry Hinton, Cambridge, Middle and Late Saxon settlement at Trumpington, Cambridge, and excavations on a prehistoric landscape at Melbourn, South Cambridgeshire. Stuart is a Practitioner with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (PCIfA).

Ted Levermore

Ted has 10 years' experience in commercial archaeology. Following a BA in Archaeology and Anthropology (Cambridge), Ted joined Oxford Archaeology's Cambridge office as an excavator. In 2016 he moved permanently into the Finds department. His current role is Finds Supervisor and Ceramics Specialist. His specialisms are in Fired Clay and Ceramic Building Materials analysis. In 2018, he completed an MA in Artefact Studies (UCL) where he formalised his finds training and developed skills in ceramic studies, petrography and elemental analyses. His main writing and research interests are in ceramic production sites, namely Roman pottery and tile kilns, as well as prehistoric to Medieval textile production tools and salt making.
