Studies suggest that taking astaxanthin before an ischemic event, such as a stroke, provides protection to the muscle tissue of the heart. It has also been shown to have a positive effect on cholesterol levels by decreasing overall triglycerides and increasing HDL (‘good') cholesterol, which provides protection against atherosclerosis as HDL cholesterol carries LDL (‘bad') cholesterol back to the liver to prevent it from forming plaques in the arteries.
