A product of Catholic schools from first grade through doctoral studies, he first met the Jesuits as a high school student at Brophy Prep, the Jesuits' high school in Phoenix. From there he continued his Jesuit education at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, where he majored in Linguistics and fed his passion for politics. After graduating, he worked for three years on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant in the United States Senate.
Father Maher entered the Jesuits in 1986, at age 26. In the course of his training, he earned Masters degrees in Philosophy and Divinity and a doctorate in Education. He has taught in Jesuit high schools in Philadelphia and Washington, DC, and he spent 11 years as an associate dean and professor at Georgetown University, including two years at Georgetown's branch campus of its School of Foreign Service in the Persian Gulf. Fr. Maher then served for three years at the University of Scranton where he was Executive Director of the Jesuit Center, a resource center he founded to help University faculty and staff understand and engage more fully in the Catholic and Jesuit mission of the University.
