Essentially, CCS ensures that the carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions pro duced from the use of fossil fuels in electricity generation and industrial processes are prevented from entering the atmosphere, and do not contribute to global warming. The carbon dioxide is then stored in carefully selected geological rock formations that are typically located several kilometres below the earth's surface. Every aspect of the CCS chain is well understood, and is extensively covered by European and national regulations - ensuring safe and proper operations. The Sleipner project, part of the Network, has been successfully operating since 1996.
