Adam Doyle - CEO

Adam Doyle is the Chief Executive Officer for the Sussex Integrated Care Board (NHS Sussex), having worked within the Sussex system for the last six years. Adam was previously Chief Executive Officer for the three Sussex Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) - NHS Brighton and Hove CCG, NHS East Sussex CCG and NHS West Sussex CCG - and was also the leader of the Integrated Care System until the legislative changes to how systems work came into effect on 1 July 2022. Adam has been credited with the significant turnaround of the CCGs in Sussex, having taken the previous seven CCGs in Sussex from an inadequate to good position, and has led the reshaping of the Sussex ICS to be one of the most improved systems in the country. Over this time, Adam has also led the local NHS response to COVID-19. Adam started his NHS career as a physiotherapist and has been Chief Executive Officer of NHS Merton CCG and Director of Community Services and Private Care at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. Adam is a member of Sciana: The Health Leaders Network, and is also a Salzburg Global Seminar Fellow.

Andrew Davies

Caroline Waterfield

Caroline has responsibility for delivering several elements of work related to recruitment and employment practice including supply, safe and values driven recruitment, raising concerns and regulation. The team are also contracted to support the implementation of modernising healthcare science careers. Working closely with professional and system regulators, government departments and the national NHS organisations, the team represents employers' views on changes to policy and legislation. To do this well and ensure they add value to employers, the team work closely with employers. They support HR and service managers to implement policy changes and improve recruitment and employment practices by producing practical resources and by facilitating the sharing of learning and best practice through workshops and share and learn network sessions. Caroline joined NHS Employers in November 2007 after holding HR roles in the NHS in West and North Cumbria and then in Harrogate. Dame Jackie Daniel

Dame Jackie began her NHS career as a nurse before moving into management, and has been a Chief Executive Officer for 20 years leading a range of acute, mental health and specialist trusts. She was appointed as Chief Executive of Newcastle Hospitals in March 2018. Since then the Trust retained its outstanding CQC status, and was the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. She was recently named as one of the top five chief executives of the year in the HSJ awards for 2021. She has a degree in Nursing Studies, a Masters degree in Quality Assurance in Health & Social Care and is a qualified business and personal coach. A strong advocate of developing diverse leadership and supporting women in leadership roles, Dame Jackie is also passionate about improving the health, wealth and wellbeing of those living in our region. She is currently a member of the NHS Assembly, an Independent Member of the Board of the Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR), a member of the National People Board and a member of the Recovery, Resilience and Growth Oversight Board. She is also a Director of the Academic Health Science Network and Northern Health Science Alliance.

Daniel Reynolds

Daniel joined in December 2018. His team is responsible for internal and external communications as well as membership engagement and insight. Daniel is a former journalist and now communications director with over 20 years' experience of working in high-profile national organisations, including think tanks and membership bodies. He began his career as a news reporter on a local newspaper before joining Sky as a news reporter. He then joined the independent health think tank The King's Fund, where he eventually became deputy director of communications before taking up the role of director of communications at another think tank, the Nuffield Trust, in 2009. After seven years he left to become director of communications at NHS Providers before joining the NHS Confederation in January 2019. Daniel is responsible for the NHS Confederation's internal and external communications and also for NHS Employers, which is part of the Confederation. This includes our media, public affairs, digital, publishing and social media activities. In addition, Daniel is also responsible for our membership operations, which spans the support we provide to our membership; our information products, including member bulletins; membership subscriptions; and our CRM. Daniel also plays a key role in supporting the development of the NHS communications profession by lecturing on NHS England and NHS Improvement's post-graduate diploma in healthcare communications. In 2020 he was commissioned by NHS England and NHS Improvement to head a taskforce of NHS communications leaders that examined local integrated care systems that have been successful in communicating and engaging across local communities, staff and the full range of partners that comprise their systems. This led to the report: Building common purpose: Learning on engagement and communications in integrated care systems. In June 2021, Daniel established a network for communications and engagement leaders working in integrated care systems. Daniel has an MSc in public policy, has completed the CIPR diploma in public relations and is a member of the CIPR.

Danny Mortimer

Danny is the deputy chief executive of the NHS Confederation and chief executive of NHS Employers. He has been chief executive of NHS Employers since November 2014, leading work relating to workforce policy and practice. Danny first worked in healthcare as a porter and a CSV care assistant before becoming a management trainee in Stoke-on-Trent. He worked in the NHS in Bath and Brighton before taking up his first director post in West Sussex. He then worked in executive roles in hospitals in Hertfordshire and Nottingham before joining NHS Employers. Danny is a Chartered Companion of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, a Trustee of both NHS Charities Together and the NHS Retirement Fellowship and chairs the Cavendish Coalition of social care and health organisations.

Darren Hughes, director of the Welsh NHS Confederation, reflects on the pressures on the NHS in Wales as the narrative turns to 'living with Covid'. Darren has been director of the Welsh NHS Confederation since August 2019. Prior to this he had worked in health professional regulation as Director for Wales at the General Pharmaceutical Council and Head of Office at the General Medical Council. Darren joined the Welsh Confed with a wealth of experience working with the NHS. His career to date has meant he has worked extensively with the NHS, healthcare professionals, the UK and Welsh Governments, politicians, the media and health stakeholders. He has also conducted research at Cardiff University looking at how organisations can work together to campaign for legislative change. Darren was born and brought up in Gilfach Goch in south Wales and now lives "just over the mountain" with his family.

Dr Layla McCay

Layla joined the NHS Confederation in 2018 and became Director of Policy in 2021. Layla joined the NHS Confederation in 2018 as Director of International Relations and Director of the NHS European Office; since 2021 these have been incorporated into her wider role as Director of Policy. Layla joined the NHS Confederation following a medical career and a decade of leadership roles in international public health and health systems policy. After obtaining her medical degree at the University of Glasgow, Layla trained as a psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where she later also sat on the trust board. She first moved into national health policy as Clinical Advisor to the NHS Medical Director at the Department of Health. Layla went on to earn a Masters degree in Health Policy, Planning and Financing from LSE and LSHTM and took up the role of Assistant Medical Director at Bupa. From there, Layla moved into international public health and health systems. She has held international roles at the World Health Organisation, the World Bank and at several global health NGOs, think tanks and universities based in Washington, Tokyo, Hong Kong and London, and has led teams across Africa and Asia. She has held academic positions at Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Hong Kong University, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and at TED. Layla is founder of the Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health, is an Asia Global Fellow, and has written on health issues for a diversity of international publications from The Lancet, to New Statesman, National Geographic, and South China Morning Post. Her book Restorative Cities: urban design for mental health and wellbeing was published by Bloomsbury in 2021.

Dr Peta Foxall

Peta is committed to public service and has extensive experience of leading and working in multi-disciplinary teams within the NHS, higher education and charitable bodies. She brings a wealth of governance experience at Board level and has helped to guide organisations, partnerships and federations through complex change. Peta is a biomedical scientist by profession and her formative years were spent at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and the SW Thames Regional Renal Unit in South London. She subsequently developed an academic career, from Senior Lecturer at UCL's Institute of Urology and Nephrology to Associate Professor and Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes at the University of Exeter Medical School and Chair of the school's research ethics committee. Peta has now established a successful career in voluntary senior leadership roles, and known as a servant leader, creative thinker and problem solver. She is currently the national Chair of The Wildlife Trusts and Lead Governor of the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (formerly the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust), as well as member of the #iwill Movement's Partnership Board and advocate for youth social action across all sectors.

Heather was also previously Director of the Sustainable Northern Ireland Programme where she was responsible for developing the organisation which provided advice and guidance to government departments on sustainable development issues. Heather's earlier career was spent in the field of Environmental Health and she held positions across various specialisms including health and safety, consumer protection, training and health promotion. Ifti Majid

Having completed post-graduate management studies at Sheffield Hallam University with a particular interest in business process redesign Ifti moved into Director Roles in 2008. A great supporter of the benefit of integrated systems on improving outcomes for local populations Ifti has led the development of Derbyshire's Anchor Charter and is the Lead CEO for Derbyshire Provider Collaborative at scale. Jane Green

Prior to returning to her home city of Cardiff in 2011, the majority of Jane's career was in New Zealand where she was a senior manager in the public service following a wide ranging career in the private sector including transport, finance, telecommunications and public relations consultancy. In her various roles as General Manager Sector Strategy and Director Communications at the Ministry of Justice; Corporate Communications Manager at the Ministry of Education; and National Communications Manager at the Department of Work and Income, Jane worked with NZ Government Ministers and Chief Executives to deliver government policies and initiatives. This included leading programmes across public service boundaries, as well as with third sector organisations and the private sector. Jane is involved with the Welsh NHS Confederation's role of leading and supporting the healthcare debate in Wales and in building strategic relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. Working closely with Members, particularly NHS Chief Executives, to facilitate and support collective priorities, Jane works with external partners to understand and overcome barriers to the integration of health and social care. Jane manages the Welsh NHS Confederation's support for NHS Wales Executive Director Peer Groups whose actions advance the vision of delivering the Welsh Government's A Healthier Wales, and she fosters opportunities to create synergies in cross Peer Group working.

Joan Saddler

Joan is director of partnerships and equality at the NHS Confederation leading work around inclusive engagement and equality and diversity. She was formerly national director of patient and public affairs based within the patient and public engagement and experience division at the Department of Health and Social Care. Areas of responsibility included NHS and 3rd sector liaison, complaints, local involvement networks (LINks) and transition to Healthwatch. As a former primary care trust chair and mental health trust non executive, Joan also brings a system wide governance lens to her work along with her experience as a chief executive within the community and voluntary sector. Joan was awarded an OBE for services to health and diversity in 2007. Her experience informs her role working with the chief executive of NHS England as co-chair of the national NHS Equality and Diversity Council.

The Associate programme is a key part of his role, and John chairs the series of InFocus virtual events that helps you to engage with our senior team, understand the key issues affecting our members and learn more about how you can support and represent NHS leaders. John has 25 years' experience working in membership bodies, including nine years at the NHS Confederation from 2002 to 2011, as Head of Membership and subsequently Director of Member Services. He has also held senior roles at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, NHS Providers, The Law Society of England & Wales, the Global Law Summit, AXELOS Global Best Practice and a technology consultancy working with membership bodies and charities.

Larissa Brock

A graduate from the University of the West of England, Larissa was a teacher for 12 years before transitioning into programme support and subsequently joining the Welsh NHS Confederation in 2019. She initially worked on the Welsh Government's transformation programme ‘A Healthier Wales' to support the All Wales Medical Directors, Executive Directors of Nursing and Assistant Medical Directors in Primary Care in implementing programme objectives. Currently, Larissa works with the Public Health Directors Leadership Group, Directors of Digital and Directors of Therapies and Health Care Sciences across Wales, assisting in strategic health service recovery following the pandemic and implementing service transformation for the NHS of the future. Larissa has two adult children and enjoys walking her dog, going to the gym and singing in a choir in her spare time.

Lauri Malusi

Madelaine Phillips

Most recently, she spent nearly four years as the health account manager at the political monitoring company Newsdirect Wales, where she was responsible for researching and reporting on all health matters emerging from the Welsh Government and the Senedd.

Marie Gabriel

With almost 20 years of NHS Board experience, Marie is currently the Independent Chair Designate of the North East London Integrated Care System, Chair of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and of the NHS Race and Health Observatory. Prior to this, Marie chaired East London NHS Foundation Trust and before that commissioning organisations with budgets up to £3bn. Her first NED role was as Vice Chair of Newham University Hospital Trust. Marie's national roles include membership of the National People Board and National Equality and Diversity Group and she is also the Co-Chair of the London People Board and a member of the Greater London Authority's London Health Board. Marie's background is in local government and the voluntary sector with particular experience in social justice, regeneration and equity. In 2020 Marie's contribution to the NHS was recognised through her incorporation in the Health Service Journal's list of the 80 most influential people in the NHS and the award of her CBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours. Marie's contribution to the London Borough of Newham was recognised in 2010 when she was awarded Honorary Freedom of the Borough. Marie is a member of the NHS Confederation's Remuneration Committee.

Marie Pritchard

Marie joined the NHS Confederation in August 2012 and took up the role of Director of People and Governance in July 2021. Marie leads our teams that support our staff with HR, organisational development and design, equality and diversity, governance and compliance. She is the organisational lead for Business Continuity Planning and is the designated Senior Information Officer for the NHS Confederation. Marie has been a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development since 2010 and has 20 years' experience working in HR in the public and not for profit sectors including establishing and delivering HR services within the Police and the Education sectors. During the Covid pandemic Marie took on an additional role as Deputy HR Director for NHS Nightingale, Yorkshire and the Humber where she led a team to establish an end to end staff welfare service providing multi-faceted support for the physical and emotional wellbeing of staff.

Matthew Taylor

Matthew joined the NHS Confederation as Chief Executive in June 2021. Matthew is a high-profile public figure who has had a distinguished career at the heart of public policy for the last 20 years. He has led the RSA for 15 years and during that time he has transformed the organisation into a global institution, with 30,000 fellows and a high-profile and influential research programme. Before that he was Chief Adviser on Political Strategy to Prime Minister Tony Blair, and he also ran the Institute for Public Policy Research for four years. He is a widely known commentator on policy, politics and public service reform and regularly appears on national media programmes, including as a panellist on BBC Radio 4's Moral Maze. He was also commissioned by the Conservative Government in 2016 to carry out an independent review into modern employment practices. Matthew started his career as a health policy researcher in the West Midlands. Matthew brings a remarkable depth of experience at the heart of government and public policy and is a compelling advocate for our members as they face the challenges of recovering from the pandemic and delivering better health for all the communities they serve.

Michael Bloomfield

Michael Bloomfield was appointed as Chief Executive of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service in March 2018. Michael has 30 years' experience working in the public sector. He joined the Civil Service in 1987, moving to the Department of Health in 1998 where he held a number of posts including in Public Health policy and Secondary Care policy. In 2007 he was appointed Head of Performance Management in the Service Delivery Unit, before joining the Health and Social Care Board as Assistant Director of Performance Management when it was established in 2009. Michael was appointed Director of Corporate Services in the Board in March 2011 and in November 2012, also took on the role of Director of Performance Management and Service Improvement. In November 2016, he was appointed HSCB Deputy Chief Executive. Michael is Chair of the Northern Ireland Cancer Network, the Northern Ireland Major Trauma Network and Chair of the Northern Ireland Confederation for Health and Social Care (NICON). He is a Trustee of the NHS Confederation and member of the NHS Confederation's Audit and Risk Committee.

Nanda Ratnavel

Nanda has spent most of his working career within finance in healthcare environments and joins us as Trustee and Chair of Audit and Risk Committee. Nanda has spent most of his working career within finance in healthcare environments and has been the Director of Finance at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability since 2016. He has also held executive roles in a charity and in further education. Nanda has a track record of helping organisations implement major projects, identify development opportunities, achieve cost reductions and improve financial reporting and performance. All of these are allied with a passion for public service and desire to provide the highest quality service to service users. Over the last ten years, Nanda has been a governor of a large NHS foundation trust and also a governor at one of London's largest further education groups chairing both the finance, planning and resources; and audit committees at various times. He has also been an adviser on a project with the National Institute for Health Research. Nanda plays football, attends rock concerts and plays the drums in his spare time. He lives in Streatham, south London.

Nesta Lloyd-Jones

Nesta has over ten years' experience working in policy and public affairs in Wales and is currently assistant director of the Welsh NHS Confederation. After completing her law degree and being called to the Bar in 2004, Nesta worked at Welsh Women's Aid for six years as legal issues co-ordinator. Nesta then became part of the award-winning External Affairs team at Macmillan Cancer Support. During her time at Macmillan, Nesta was also a consultant for Rape Crisis England and Wales. Since April 2014, Nesta has been working for the Welsh NHS Confederation focussing on Policy and Public Affairs before being appointed Assistant Director in August 2019. Nesta is responsible for public policy, public affairs, research, media relations and effective political liaison on behalf of Welsh NHS Confederation Members. Nesta was a founding Trustee of a new charity, Surviving Economic Abuse, which is now recognised as the leading organisation raising awareness of and transforming responses to economic abuse. Nesta has also been a Trustee of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, Chair of Public Affairs Cymru and has volunteered for her local Citizens Advice Bureau and BAWSO.

Nikki Barraclough
