Needs assessments have shown that 78% of caregivers of children with FASD did not have someone to turn to in times of stress. Peer support can reduce the emotional burden for caregivers, improve coping, and preventing the escalation of distress. A healthy caregiver is a protective factor for children, particularly those with disabilities such as FASD. For many years, NavOn contributed to enhancing FASD supports in our community by facilitating a caregiver support group and a parent-peer mentoring program, both provided at no cost to families. With many options for caregiver support emerging in the last few years, NavOn has shifted focus to meet our mandate of addressing service gaps.
