Upright, vertical planking was an idea that was born in the dugout during the 2010 season of the Lake County Captains, a minor league affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians (Indians). As a strength & conditioning coach in professional baseball, I remember having conversations during the game with physical therapists and athletic trainers on how exercise movements should always follow the "cost-benefit ratio". The benefit of the movement should ALWAYS outweigh the cost... This is where the ‘vertical plank' idea was born. Later that evening, long after the game, I pondered if there could be a possibility to recreate that dugout ‘vertical plank' movement within the weight room for the benefit our players. The solution wasn't that simple.
