WHITNEY BARNS

The Whitney Barns were built in 1901, by William C Whitney, and threatened with demolition in 2015. The Whitney Barns Group was formed to save this important part of history which is an integral part of the history of the historic Aiken Horse District... The Whitney Barns Group has restored one historic barn and is raising funds to renovate 2 more barns on the property. The current focus is on restoration of the iconic "Cow Barn" located on Mead Avenue across from the Track Kitchen and at the entrance to the larger barns. Our goal is to save these historic barns in the horse district of Aiken and bring in additional revenue to the city and county of Aiken, SC... These activities have brought "Winter Colony" people to Aiken since the late 19th century to enjoy the weather and participate in these equestrian activities. William Whitney built much of the infrastructure to support these activities drawing such dignitaries as Teddy Roosevelt, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Many estates..
