The Associates was introduced when a group of six young black professional men wanted some fun activities that did not include Washington's bar scene. As close personal friends of like minds and social interests, they decided to organize a social club. Since they enjoyed the activities of a Philadelphia group called Mox Nix (six of one, half dozen of the other), they agreed that they would model their group after this organization. At what would become the club's first meeting, in April of 1971, those six friends met to discuss the formation of a group they would call The Associates. After a brief discussion about the structure of the organization, a president was elected. From its inception, the club has had a philosophy of offering activities that are fun, welcoming and well presented.
