LINCOLN HIGHWAY

As one of the United States' first transcontinental highway routes, Lincoln Highway is a historically significant route, not only for the Chicago region, but also the nation. In 1912, there were few modern roads in the United States. Carl Fisher, a real estate developer and entrepreneur, conceived the idea of a "coast to coast rock highway," which would run from Times Square in New York City to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. In 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association was founded by Fisher, Henry Joy, president of the Packard Motor Car Company, and other elected officials.
