As a doctoral student, I spent three years studying material properties of earthen homes on a $500 research budget, which included furnishing my lab, and buying sensors and raw material. This didn't leave any left over for a powerful research computer or expensive software. Instead, I used many open source programs, simply because they were free to use legally.
