My research used drones for data-driven, semi-autonomous tree canopy sampling. Tree scientists need leaf samples for studying trees and there is not currently an efficient method to get the samples. Our goal is to use remote sensing to identify branches of interest. The drone had a sampling device that hangs below it. Using computer vision, the drone tracked the target branch and would retrieve the branch sample. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation, The Morton Arboretum Center for Tree Science, Morton Salt, and The Robotics Lab@IIT...
Using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) we made 3D models of trees to aid in the study of the tree's structure
