Alan Borrowman

Alan Borrowman, a Fellow of the UK Institution of Chemical Engineers, gained his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering in 1970 and initially worked in fine chemicals, gaining experience at a senior level in process design and project management. For the last 20 years he has provided risk management and integrity assurance services within capital design projects in the oil & gas industry, and has managed two UK-based technical risk and safety management consultancies since 2001. During this time, he has travelled widely to chair HAZOP, HAZID, SIL assessments, design peer reviews, and has carried out technical audits of major engineering projects. He has developed project risk management awareness and practitioner courses, delivered the in-house HAZOP team leadership training for Shell International, and lectured to the I.Chem.E.'s Process Safety and Loss Prevention M.Sc. course at Sheffield University. He has evaluated safety and business critical systems of hardware, procedures and personnel, such as verification schemes and hazard management systems, and produced performance standards for designers and operators to meet these requirements. From his career experience he has evolved the philosophy that the correct application of reasoning about safety or business risk at the right time is a driver for project cost reduction as well as avoiding harm. He now divides his time between safety consultancy and running a company utilising oil & gas technology to produce energy by underground coal gasification.

Aldo Pennini

He spent 8 years at Anglo American Plc serving as Director of External Affairs in Australia, then as Chief of Staff to two Chief Executives at the company headquarters in London, where he acquired a unique perspective on the dynamics at the top of a multinational corporation. Aldo began his career in government, spending more than 14 years serving as senior policy advisor and Chief of Staff to State Premiers and Ministers in New South Wales and Queensland (Australia) where he shaped policy and negotiated legislation ranging from natural resource management to carbon emissions trading and multicultural affairs.
