Sergeant Major Ruiz enlisted in the Marine Corps February 1993 in Phoenix, Az. On 2 November 1993, he reported to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, CA. He graduated in January 1994 and reported to Marine Combat Training, Golf Company.

Mr. Habel was born and raised in Northeast Ohio. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in May 1985, having completed his undergraduate education at the U.S. Naval Academy. An infantry officer, he was assigned to 3d Battalion, 6th Marines in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in May 1986 serving as a Rifle Platoon Commander, Rifle Company Executive Officer and on the Battalion staff. During this tour, he deployed to the Mediterranean and the Western Pacific.
In July 1989, Mr. Habel was transferred to the Marine detachment on the battleship Wisconsin (BB-64) in Norfolk, VA, where he served as the Executive Officer and the Commanding Officer and deployed as part of Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Upon graduating with Honors from Amphibious Warfare School in 1992, Mr. Habel reported to 2d Battalion, 3d Marines in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he served as a Rifle Company Commander, Weapons Company Commander, Operations Officer, and Logistics Officer and made two unit deployments to the Western Pacific.
Mr. Habel graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School in March 1997, and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in Manpower and Personnel Management. Subsequently, Mr. Habel served as the Officer Inventory Planner (MPP-30) at Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, until May, 2000. Mr. Habel was assigned to 3d Battalion, 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California as the Executive Officer in July 2000, and deployed with the Battalion in August 2000 to fight wild-land fires in Idaho. Mr. Habel transferred to the 1st Marine Division Staff in June, 2001 and served as the G-3 Training Officer and Plans Officer.
Mr. Habel graduated with distinction from the National War College in Washington DC in May 2003, and was awarded a Master of Arts in National Strategy. Mr. Habel subsequently reported for duty as the Inspector-Instructor of 2d Battalion, 25th Marines in July 2005. During this assignment, he took the battalion on annual training exercises at Camp Fuji, Japan and Exercise Battle Griffin 05 in Central Norway.
Mr. Habel transferred to Quantico, Virginia in July 2005, and served as the Program Objective Memorandum (POM) Officer for Combat Development and Integration, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. In July 2007, Mr. Habel assumed command of the Recruit Training Regiment (RTR), Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego CA. During his time in command of RTR, he graduated over 37,500 new Marines.
Mr. Habel assumed the duties as Chief of Staff for 4th Marine Division, headquartered in New Orleans LA, in August 2009 and was later assigned as Chief of Staff for Marine Forces Reserve, New Orleans LA, in September 2011. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel in December 2012.
Mr. Habel's personal decorations include the Legion of Merit (3rd award), Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), the Navy Commendation Medal (2nd award), and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Gregg Habel was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in 2012. He serves as the Executive Director of U.S. Marine Forces Reserve (MFR) and U.S. Marine Forces North (MFN) located in New Orleans, Louisiana. As such he is responsible to the Commander MFR and MFN to provide strategic leadership and management to both organizations and ensure efficient management of resources in order to optimize operational capability.
