Trust in Automation is a key construct for acceptance and safe use of automated vehicle technology, and may has been a major influencing factor that led to recent (even fatal) accidents with driving automation systems. Qualified statements on trust require that this construct can be measured. There exist questionnaires/scales that have been used in research and development for quite some time, but in the meantime, our knowledge about trust has evolved. Further, driving happens in a fast changing environment, which requires surveys to integrate the context- and situation-dependent nature of trust... With these considerations in mind, we have developed the STS-AD ("Situational Trust Scale for Automated Driving"). The scale is explicitly addressing trust research in automated vehicles and has demonstrated being a valid measurement for situational trust in a large online experiment in Germany and the United States...
