LEEWARD NEIGHBORHOOD

The shapes and structure of the Florida Vernacular style of architecture has roots embedded in the first homes ever constructed in Florida, on traditional architecture that developed over time to reflect a way of life in the Floridian environment. Features of the style have purpose and meaning: long-lasting metal roofs reflect the hot sun; deep roof overhangs to reduce solar heat gain and weathering of siding; raised foundations promote air circulation, allow access for installation and maintenance of utilities, and provide some privacy from passersby; strategically placed windows promote cross-ventilation by taking advantage afternoon breezes; and large porches typically facing to the east or west and in some instances extending around the entire perimeter of the house, to prevent sunlight from heating the walls of the living quarters, and for residents to enjoy the views while relishing the late afternoon breezes.
