RUTH PESTELL

A textile designer specialised in embroidery with a passion for paper. With a unique way of thinking and often using science theories to inform concepts to start a project, these ideas are explored fully through a logical progressive approach to create a range of interesting surface designs. Combining precise hand techniques, striking geometrics and informed lines both 2D and 3D come together to give a distinct design aesthetic. The interplay between 2D and 3D has always been a reoccurring theme in many projects and this is where my love of paper has come into its own, allowing my work to become structural and 3D. Using traditional origami techniques and combining them with hand stitch to create paper art has become a main focus outside my textile design practice. Drawing plays a major part throughout the design process in both my paper art and textile design practice, through varied drawing styles I adapt for each brief given.
