Research in the Sutherland lab is at the intersection of biology and physics: our goal is to gain a mechanistic understanding of how marine organisms interact with one another and within their fluid environment... In the Sutherland Lab, we work in underwater and in the lab to understand how the water moves in and around marine plankton when they swim and feed. These fluid interactions can be linked to swimming performance and food web interactions in the ocean.
