Adrienne Renwick earned a Master of Arts in counseling and educational psychology in 2010 from the University of Nevada, Reno. She focused on School and Community Mental Health Counseling. Additionally, she obtained an advanced certificate in addiction treatment and prevention services in 2010 through the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT). She is currently a student in the hybrid Ph.D. in Counseling program at Oregon State University, with an anticipated graduation date of June 2023.
Adrienne is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). Carrie Murphey, a proud product of Nevada City, California, comes to the Advising Center most recently via Lewiston, Maine, where she served as Assistant Dean of Students for First-Year Experience and Housing at Bates College. After earning her bachelor's degree in American Cultural Studies and completing her Social Studies 7-12 teaching certification, Carrie taught special education and worked in residential summer camps in Maine. She then returned to Bates to work in residence life before moving to Chicago to attend graduate school at Northwestern University, where she served as an Admission Counselor and managed an academic mentorship program.
Following completion of her master's degree in higher education administration and policy, she joined the team of the College Programming Office at the University of Chicago as the Assistant Director of Class Programs, supervising the student leaders that support new student Orientation and organizing a variety of large-scale co-curricular events, including Taking the Next Step, a career exposure event for second- and third-year students in The College.
From UChicago, Carrie returned to Maine and Bates College as Assistant Dean of Students for First-Year Programs. This role involved working to welcome new students and their families and support their transition into the college from pre-arrival, to orientation, and throughout their first year via orientation, connection to residential First-Year Centers and academic First-Year Seminars, and an ongoing programming series, How to College. In this role, Carrie also served as a Student Support Advisor for students in all four class years, offering supplemental academic and personal advising, was a participant in the Dean-on-Call rotation for crisis management, a trainer for the campus Green Dot Bystander Intervention program, and a community standards hearing officer. She established and chaired the committee responsible for the Common Read Program and served as inaugural chair for the Student Affairs Professional Development Committee.
Carrie returned to the West to join the incredible academic advising team and the whole Student Success staff, and looks forward to working with the students, staff, and faculty of the College of Education and the campus community at-large to support accessible and student-centered advising, recruitment, and retention efforts. She is joined in Reno by her rapscallion of a Welsh Terrier, Pacey, who looks like a stuffed animal, loves snow and swimming, and who lives in constant fear of people on skateboards.

Diana ElAlami is the Academic Advisor in the College of Education Advising Center. Prior to joining the University of Nevada, Reno, Diana was a Pre-Med advisor at the University of Oklahoma and Health Science advisor at Rose State College. In addition to her experience as an advisor, Diana is a paralegal who worked for 10 years in a law office in Washington State. Diana has a Master's degree in Academic Advising from Kansas State University where she focused her attention on student retention and advising administration. In her off time, Diana enjoys spending time with her family, being outdoors, and never passes up an opportunity to work on jigsaw puzzles.

Dr. Townsend's research centers on the academic language development of adolescent students, with specific attention to vocabulary, comprehension, and disciplinary literacy. She examines both the unique academic language demands of the disciplines and effective instructional strategies to help students understand and use academic language in and across academic disciplines. Her current project, funded by the Spencer Foundation, is an intervention comparing how different types of background knowledge and academic language scaffolding impact the reading comprehension of multilingual adolescents. Dr. Townsend's work has been published in Reading Research Quarterly, The Elementary School Journal, The Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, and Topics in Language Disorders, as well as in other journals and multiple books. Dr. Townsend is a Tibbetts Distinguished Teacher Award Winner. She created the innovative Virtual Reading Clinic in the online M.Ed. Program in Reading Curriculum & Instruction to support remote and rural teachers in a graduate-level practicum experience. Nationally, Dr. Townsend serves as a Principal Member of the Education Research Scientific Review Panel with the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) in the U.S. Department of Education. She is also a member of the Reading Standing Committee for the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP). In Nevada, Dr. Townsend is the co-founder and President of the Nevada Adolescent Literacy Network (NALN). Within the College of Education and Human Development at UNR, Dr. Townsend is the Graduate Program Director of the M.Ed. in Reading Curriculum & Instruction and the Reading Specialist Endorsement Certificate programs.

Julie Pennington is a professor of literacy studies in the College of Education and director of the Center for Learning and Literacy. She has focused on the areas of literacy and diversity throughout her career as a classroom teacher and literacy intervention teacher for fourteen years and currently as a teacher educator and researcher. Her research interests include the use of autoethnography in teacher education and pursuing questions related to how teachers approach literacy instruction in linguistically and culturally diverse settings.

Marie joined the University of Nevada, Reno in April 2019 as an Administrative Assistant for the Latino Research Center. Beginning her education at Truckee Meadows Community College, Marie later transferred to the University of Nevada, Reno and obtained her Bachelor of Science with an emphasis in Human Development and Family Studies. Following the completion of her Master of Arts focusing on Higher Education Administration, Marie joined the College of Education & Human Development advising team. Monika Bharti is a Graduate Assistant for the Center for Learning & Literacy. She processes registration applications, records attendance, and facilitates family communications for the Center. She also plans and implements whole and small group instruction, supervises tutoring sessions and administrative tasks in the Center's tutoring program. Monika is a doctoral student in the education program with an emphasis in STEM Education & Literacy Studies. She holds an M.Ed in Elementary Education & Teaching from UNR and an M.Sc in Chemistry from the University of Delhi, India.

Dr. Salas focuses on the academic literacy needs of English Language Learners (ELLs) and the preparation of teachers to work with, and meet the needs of an increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse student population. In addition, she addresses issues of race, culture and language in the classroom, in academic environments and in children's literature. She has more than twenty years of experience working with high poverty, Hispanic, and culturally and linguistically diverse learners and their parents. Her university teaching career began at a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) in south Texas and has taken her to universities and schools in North Carolina, California and Nevada.
Her current research deals with the sociocultural aspects of language and literacy development, the preparation of teachers to teach in a culturally and linguistically diverse society and on improving literacy instruction provided to English Language Learners (ELLs) and students who are in at-risk conditions. She is also interested in studying the complex relationship between the cognitive and linguistic demands of academic literacy in school and informal educational settings. She is passionate about science and technology and has been involved in forming and co-coaching a robotics club for elementary school children. Her robotics teams have competed at local First Lego League competitions affording the students immeasurable academic, social, and technical opportunities. She teaches courses in adolescent literacy and children's literature.
