Abayomi Fabunmi

Abayomi Fabunmi, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist who specializes in the treatment of adult glaucoma and cataracts. Dr. Fabunmi completed medical school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN, where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Society and Alpha Omega Alpha. During his tenure Dr. Fabunmi completed a clerkship at The Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, where he authored a review article and a workshop about key topics in glaucoma. For his ophthalmology training, Dr. Fabunmi attended Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio, where he had the honor of caring for our veterans at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. Dr. Fabunmi's commitment to surgical excellence and patient care enabled him to complete a glaucoma fellowship at the world-renowned Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City, a primary glaucoma referral center for nearly 4 million people. Training at Dean McGee, Dr. Fabunmi obtained robust clinical and surgical experience including many rare and uncommon forms of glaucoma. His extensive practical experience in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, complex cataract surgery, and traditional glaucoma surgery allows him to provide the full spectrum of treatment options to his patients. Abayomi Fabunmi, MD, was born in Lagos, Nigeria and raised in Tallahassee, FL. In college he met his wife Oladele, a native of Gainesville, FL; they married in April 2017. Alfonso Ponce

Dr. Ponce is a board-certified ophthalmologist who grew up in Guatemala and graduated from Francisco Marroquin University in Guatemala where he obtained his Bachelor in Science and MD degree. His interest in retina started when he did his residency in ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary where he was involved in retinal imaging studies and lutein measurement. He then continued his training by completing a fellowship in medical and surgical treatment of Retinal diseases at the Infirmary. Dr. Ponce has actively participated in national ophthalmic trials for diabetic eye disease, he has been part of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network (DRCRnet), and has presented at several national meetings. He also trained future ophthalmologists and retinal specialists, for which he was recognized as the outstanding teacher for three consecutive years. Dr. Ponce speaks Spanish and English. Brandon Rodriguez

Brandon Rodriguez, MD, is a board certified, award-winning ophthalmologist specializing in advanced cataract and refractive surgery. He is also a cornea trained surgeon, who specializes in pterygium surgery and cutting edge treatments for dry eye syndrome. After obtaining his medical degree from Penn State University College of Medicine, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy and volunteered to go with a U.S. Marine Corps infantry battalion overseas for 2 deployments, including Afghanistan, after 9/11. Upon returning home and finishing 5 years of active duty military service, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at State University of New York (SUNY) - Downstate Medical Center, eventually serving as a chief resident. Finally, he completed his fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the world-renowned Weill Cornell Medical College, Cornell University, in New York City. His advanced training and experience in cataract surgery, LASIK & PRK, pterygium surgery and in cutting-edge treatments for dry eye syndrome have resulted in him serving on numerous medical advisory boards for several pharmaceutical companies throughout the United States. Brian Phillpotts

Brian Phillpotts, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in diseases and surgery of the vitreous and retina. "Expertise combined with humility" characterizes Dr. Phillpotts' informative, straightforward and compassionate style of patient care. His area of concentration includes medical and surgical management of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, macular holes, epi-retinal membranes and other vitreo-retinal disorders such as retinal vascular occlusion and sickle cell retinopathy. Dr. Phillpotts is dedicated to educating patients about their conditions and treatment options, equipping them to make informed and confident decisions. Carol Clingerman

Carol Clingerman is a board-certified Doctor of Audiology, with experience in both clinical and private practice settings. She specializes in digital signal processing of hearing aid technology. In addition, she has vast experience in audiometric evaluations, hearing aid fittings and verification as well as sales of products such as Bluetooth accessories, ear molds, and noise protection. Dr. Clingerman completed her Bachelor of Arts in speech and Hearing Handicapped Education at the State University of New York (SUNY) Cortland. She then attended Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY where she earned her Master of Science in Audiology. She concluded her education at A.T. Still University /Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa, AZ where she earned her Doctor of Audiology degree. Dr. Clingerman has been a practicing audiologist since 1989, working in the additional capacities of Center Manager and Private Practice Owner. Most recently she was the Senior Audiologist at Finger Lakes Ear Nose and Throat of Western New York. Dr. Clingerman lives in Land O'Lakes with her husband and son. She also has a daughter who is married and lives in Colorado. She enjoys spending time outside with her family and two dogs. Crystal Hoffert

Crystal Hoffert, OD has a well-rounded background in optometry. She graduated with Honors from Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) in Indiana, PA with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Science/Pre Optometry. Dr. Hoffert attended Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), a school well known for its unique primary care philosophy, holistic approach, and excellence in modern optometry. While attending PCO, she was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honors Society. Dr. Hoffert completed several externships around the United States, including an extended medical optometry rotation at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, IL. She has received several honors and awards for clinical excellence. Dr. Hoffert graduated from Pennsylvania College of Optometry with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Science and a Doctorate of Optometry. Dr. Hoffert enjoys practicing medical based optometry with a special interest in diseases of the retina. Prior to joining the St. Luke's family, she was a licensed optometrist at Brenart Eye Clinic in Yorkville, Illinois. Dr. Hoffert moved to Florida from Illinois in 2015 with her husband, Robert Hoffert, also Doctor of Optometry at St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute. They have a daughter named Laila. In her spare time, Dr. Hoffert enjoys spending time with her family on their boat and enjoying the Florida sunshine.

Dr. Caroline Perez

Dr. Caroline Perez is a Florida licensed Audiologist and a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) through which she holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). Dr. Perez received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Florida (UF) in Gainsville, Florida. At UF she discovered her passion for hearing and balance. She obtained her Doctor of Audiology from Nova Southeast University in Fort Lauderdale Florida. During her time at Nova, she was exposed to a multitude of diverse clinical environments. Dr. Perez completed several intern and externships before graduating and gained an immense amount of knowledge in diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation. Since graduation, Dr. Perez has worked as a Doctor of Audiology at a large ENT practice. Dr. Danielle Arcaro

Danielle Arcaro, MD completed her residency in ophthalmology at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She is board-certified and is practicing general ophthalmology. Dr. Arcaro received her Bachelor of Arts degree Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Rutgers University in New Jersey. She completed her medical studies at the George Washington University Medical Center, where she remained to serve her Internal Medicine internship and Ophthalmology residency. Dr. James Gills

Dr. James Gills founded St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute in 1968. From that time on, he committed himself to perfecting the treatment of cataracts with the highest level of patient safety, comfort and clear vision. His innovative techniques have helped reduce complications of cataract surgery and define the standard of care. He is one of the leading cataract surgery and astigmatism correction authorities in the world and he has shared his knowledge and techniques with thousands of surgeons worldwide in symposiums, lectures and residency programs. In addition to his work at St. Luke's, Dr. Gills is known for his personal commitment to helping others and for his tremendous athletic achievements. He's endowed millions of dollars to colleges, YMCAs and charities across the United States and around the world, authored dozens of books and competed in nearly 50 marathons, six Double Iron Triathlons and 19 Ironman Triathlons. While Dr. Gills has storied accomplishments, his primary goal has always been to restore physical vision to patients and to bring spiritual vision through his own life. Today, under the guidance and expertise of his son, Dr. Pit Gills, St. Luke's continues a tradition of innovation, service, and life changing vision.

Dr. John Gooch

Dr. John Gooch is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive ophthalmology including detection and treatment plans for cataracts, glaucoma, retinal conditions, and cornea diseases. Dr. Gooch earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland and his Medical Degree, graduating with honors, from the University of Louisville School of Medicine in Louisville, Kentucky. He completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Wilford Hall US Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, TX and in 2001 he was Chief Resident. Prior to joining St. Luke's at The Villages in May 2016, Dr. Gooch was a Staff Ophthalmologist at St. Elizabeth's Physicians in Florence, Kentucky. Dr. Gooch served 28 years in the US Air Force and held several esteemed roles including Chief, Aerospace Ophthalmology at the US Air Force Aeromedical Consultation Service from October 2006 to February 2014. He was Chief Consultant to the US Air Force Surgeon General for Aerospace Ophthalmology, and a Chief Flight Surgeon with over 1,000 total military flying hours in both fighter and transport aircraft. He retired from active duty in February 2014 at the rank of Colonel. With over 20 years in practice, Dr. Gooch brings a wealth of experience to St. Luke's at The Villages. He was personally selected by Dr. Kimberly Ireland and Dr. Pit Gills to join the practice. Dr. Gooch sees patients seeking treatment of cataracts, glaucoma, retinal conditions, cornea diseases as well as other eye concerns, eye glasses prescriptions and wellness exams. Dr. Gooch resides in Lady Lake with his wife Laura and son Wesley. In his spare time he enjoys golf, fishing and spending time on the water.

Dr. Katherine Flynn

Katherine Flynn, OD is a board-certified optometric physician specializing in primary medical eye care. She is certified in the treatment and management of ocular diseases. At St. Luke's Cataract & Laser Institute, Dr. Flynn conducts eye examinations for the diagnosis, treatment and management of the visual system. Her areas of focus include: glaucoma, dry eye, and diabetic eye conditions and diseases. She also co-manages cataract and refractive surgery patients. Dr. Katherine Flynn earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and pre-medical studies at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. She received her Bachelor's Degree in vision science and her Doctor of Optometry degree at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, PA. She completed externships emphasizing medical eye care and surgical co-management at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia, Northeastern Eye Institute in Scranton, PA and at the Visual Health & Surgical Center in Lake Worth, FL. She also completed a private externship in primary eye care in Columbia, SC. Prior to joining St. Luke's in 2004, Dr. Flynn practiced comprehensive family vision care in northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2001, she participated in an optometric mission to the El Peten region of Guatemala. The mission was student-run and performed over 2,500 exams and screenings. Dr. Flynn resides in Odessa with her husband, Brian, and their daughter, Kylie. Dr. Matthew Causey

Dr. Matthew Causey is a board certified optometric physician with a special interest in medical eye care. A former science educator, Dr. Causey has a passion for excellence in patient-doctor communication. He provides comprehensive medical optometry services to his patients. Dr. Causey graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a BS in Secondary Science Education and a minor in Biomedical Physics. He then earned his Doctorate of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, widely known as one of the premier colleges in the region for modern optometry studies. While attending Nova, Dr. Matthew Causey completed an externship at Braverman Eye Center in Hollywood, Florida. During his time there, he gained experience in comprehensive medical optometry, triage, and post-operative care; all in a multi-disciplinary surgical facility. As a reflection on his time there, he received the Braverman Eye Center Extern of the Year award for clinical acumen and excellence in patient care. Dr. Matthew Causey completed an additional externship at Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute where his primary focus was on vitreo-retinal care. Dr. Megan Posey

Dr. Megan Posey is a Florida licensed Audiologist, a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (F-AAA), and a member of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology. In addition, she is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) through which she holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A). Dr. Posey received her Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, Florida. At UCF she discovered her passion for hearing and balance. She went on to obtain her Doctor of Audiology from Salus University, Osborne College of Audiology, graduating magna cum laude. During her time at Salus University she was exposed to a multitude of diverse clinical environments. Dr. Paul Glass

Paul Glass, OD is a board-certified optometric physician specializing in medical eyecare and surgical co-management. He diagnoses and treats diseases of the eyes and visual systems. His services include yearly diabetic eye exams, evaluations for dry eyes, conjunctivitis (pink eye) and ocular allergies. Dr. Glass has a keen interest in co-managing cataract and refractive surgery (LASIK and PRK) with our renowned surgeons. Dr. Glass is fully versed in co-managing femtosecond laser guided cataract surgery including lifestyle lens implants. Dr. Paul Glass is originally from Miami, Florida. There, he completed part of his undergraduate pre-optometry coursework at the University of Miami before transferring on an accelerated path to Nova Southeastern University's College of Optometry in 1998 and earned a Bachelor of Vision Science (B.S.) degree in 2000 and his Doctorate of Optometry (OD) degree in 2002. Dr. Glass and his wife, Natalee, live in New Tampa. They have two children, A.J. and Abby. Dr. Glass enjoys cooking, sports, and spending time with his family. Dr. Rachael Streeter

Dr. Rachael Streeter is a board-certified optometric physician specializing in primary eyecare. She received her bachelor's degree in vision science and her Doctor of Optometry degree from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. She was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric Honor Society for four years. Dr. Streeter completed an externship at Triad Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While there, she received training in primary eyecare with emphasis on pre and postoperative care of cataract and LASIK patients, eye infections, and all aspects of ocular disease. Before joining the staff at St. Luke's, Dr. Streeter practiced at Redbird Indian Health Clinic in Salisaw, Oklahoma. She provided primary eyecare including refractions, diagnosis and treatment of eye infections, eye emergencies, and ocular disease. Dr. Streeter enjoys reading and outside activities such as swimming and rollerblading. She resides in Clearwater with her husband James and daughter Sophia. Dr. Robert Hoffert

Rob Hoffert, OD, graduated from North Central College in Naperville, IL with a B.A. in Biology. He attended Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), a school well-known for its long standing history for excellence in modern optometry. While attending PCO, Dr. Robert Hoffert received various clinical honors as well as a Presidential scholarship and the H.L. Goldberger Memorial scholarship for academic performance. He graduated from PCO with a B.S. in Visual Sciences and a Doctorate of Optometry. He completed several internships including a medical optometry rotation at Kirk Eye Center in River Forest, IL; a visual rehabilitation rotation at the Feinbloom Visual Rehabilitation Center in Philadelphia, PA; a contact lens rotation at Burrell Family Eye Care in Norristown, PA; a medical optometry rotation at Thomas Retinal Eye Specialist in Norristown, PA; and an extended medical Optometry rotation at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia, SC. Dr. Robert Hoffert worked as a licensed optometrist at Brenart Eye Clinic in Yorkville, one of the largest optometric clinics in Illinois, before joining the St. Luke's family. He is working as a support optometrist to Dr. Pit Gills, as well as building a clinical practice of his own. He is also currently a member of the American Optometric Association. He and his wife Crystal, who is also an OD at St. Luke's, moved to Florida in 2015 from Illinois. The couple has a young daughter named Laila. In his spare time, Rob enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, and cheering for Chicago sports teams.

Dr. Robert Howard

Robert Howard, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in LASIK surgery, medical ophthalmology and glaucoma care. He is a highly experienced LASIK surgeon, having performed countless refractive surgeries since starting his career in ophthalmology. Before joining St. Luke's, Dr. Robert Howard was with the U.S. Army for eight years, most recently as Chief of Ophthalmology at Fort Meade in Maryland. Prior to that he served as Chief of Ophthalmology and Refractive Surgery at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Co-Chief Resident at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas. He began his career as an intern at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in Fort Bliss, Texas. Dr. Howard completed his undergraduate studies in Economics at Middlebury College, Middlebury, Vermont, and received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. In between work and studies, he volunteered at a Humanitarian Mission in Honduras where he performed cataract, pterygium and strabismus surgery on the locals. Additionally, he facilitated and organized access to ophthalmic care for military retirees at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Dr. Robert Howard has had LASIK surgery on his own eyes, so he is very much in tune with the procedure and what to expect before, during and after the procedure from a patient's perspective. Gustavo Gamero

Gustavo Gamero, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist who practices in the areas of comprehensive ophthalmology and glaucoma, including various types of anterior segment laser surgery. Dr. Gamero received his medical degree from Cayetano Heredia University in Peru, South America in 1981. He came to the United States in 1986 to obtain multiple sub-specialty training at the University of Texas and Duke University. Dr. Gamero later received a second residency in ophthalmology at the Catholic Medical Center in New York City. He went on to complete an 18 month fellowship in the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma at the University of Louisville, where he stayed as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology for five years. Dr. Gamero then moved to Florida serving as Assistant Professor and Director of the Glaucoma Service, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Florida College of Medicine, Jacksonville, before joining St. Luke's. In addition to patient care, Dr. Gamero has lectured at national scientific events and in South America. He has produced original work in the area of glaucoma including papers, book chapters, and monographs. He speaks fluent English and Spanish. He earned his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and was a Graduate with Honors and Special Distinction as well as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Dr. Wipfli completed his residency training at the St. Louis University Eye Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, where he received the Rabani Award for Excellence in Patient Care. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and was named Pre-Professional Student of the Year. Before joining St. Luke's, Dr. Wipfli spent nine years in private practice in Oklahoma. He has performed more than 40,000 cataract surgeries in his career. Dr. Wipfli currently lives in Tampa with his wife Allison and their daughters Aubrey and Grace. Kelsey Alcocer

Kelsey Alcocer, OD, is a board-certified optometric physician specializing in primary medical eye care. At St. Luke's, Dr. Alcocer performs comprehensive eye care for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of the visual system. As an optometrist her areas of focus include glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye and diabetic eye disease. Dr. Alcocer earned her undergraduate degree in Exercise Science at Florida State University and her Doctorate of Optometry from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry. She completed several externships during her time at Nova Southeastern University. In 2015 she interned at Nova Specialty Care Clinic in Fort Lauderdale where she gained experience in direct patient care for an underserved population. In 2016, Dr. Alcocer worked at Kids in Distress Pediatric Clinic in Fort Lauderdale, FL where she performed weekly vision therapy and visual perceptual testing for children/teens. Dr. Alcocer also completed externships with an emphasis in ocular disease at Bay Pines VA Hospital in St Petersburg, FL as well as MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL with a focus on full-scope optometry providing care for active-duty military members, dependents, and retirees. After graduate school Dr. Alcocer continued on for an additional year of residency in primary eye care and ocular pathologies at Bay Pines VA hospital. Residency training exposed her to rare ocular conditions, as well as perioperative and medical management of multiple ophthalmic disorders. Prior to joining St. Luke's in 2021, Dr. Alcocer practiced comprehensive eye care at Florida Medical Clinic. Born and raised in the Clearwater area, Dr. Alcocer and her husband Ben currently reside in Tampa and both love the Florida outdoors. Kimberly Ireland

Kimberly Ireland, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in advanced laser cataract surgery. She is the medical director of St. Luke's at The Villages. Dr. Ireland received her B.S. in Biology with High Honors from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She received her medical degree from Albany Medical College; graduating as an Honor Alumna. She completed her ophthalmology residency at the Storm Eye Institute at the Medical University of South Carolina. Following her training, Dr. Ireland spent ten years in private practice before being recruited to lead as Department Chair for a large multi-specialty group in Wisconsin. During her tenure, she oversaw tremendous expansion, including a new hospital, clinic, and the renovation of a surgery center. She distinguished herself as a progressive cataract surgeon who brought state of the art cataract techniques to her practice. For Dr. Ireland, practicing ophthalmology offers her the opportunity to improve the lives of her patients, which she considers an honor and a privilege. She is committed to supporting community programs and serving those less fortunate. Rhonda Kuhle is a Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist in the state of Florida. Her expertise is specifically helping the hard of hearing with late onset nerve deafness through amplification. Rhonda provides a wide array of professional services including complete hearing evaluations, confidential review of patient case history, otoscopic examinations, audiometric evaluations and speech understanding evaluations. She provides a comprehensive review and explanation of the findings, hearing instrument recommendations and selection (if appropriate), counseling and instruction to patients, family members and healthcare professionals. Michael Mequio

Dr. Michael Mequio, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery - including advanced technology intraocular implants. In addition to providing treatment of a wide range of eye disorders, Dr. Mequio treats patients with glaucoma, including selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) procedures and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). Dr. Mequio earned his undergraduate degree at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, MI. He graduated from Wayne State University School of Medicine at the top of his class. Dr. Mequio then completed his residency training at Kresge Eye Institute in Detroit, serving as Chief Resident. Originally from Florida, Dr. Horesh earned his B.S. in Biotechnology alongside a minor in chemistry from the University of Florida. He obtained his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL. Following medical school, Dr. Horesh completed residency training in ophthalmology at the Philadelphia College of Medicine, serving as chief resident. While in Philadelphia, he mentored under leading ophthalmic surgeons at the Wills Eye Hospital. He then completed an advanced two-year medical and surgical fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Associates in Ophthalmology in Pittsburgh, PA. Warren J. Scherer

Warren J. Scherer, MD, PhD is a board-certified ophthalmologist with over two decades of experience in comprehensive ophthalmology and research. Dr. Scherer earned his Bachelor of Science Degree and Doctor of Medicine from State University of New York at Buffalo, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude, respectively, as well as a PhD in visual neuroscience. His program of study included an internship at the Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, with a focus on internal medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Michigan's W.K. Kellogg Eye Center in Ann Arbor.
