Shortly after the turn of the mil len nium, he built roof sys tems on farms. His old est PV in stal la tion has been pro duc ing green elec tric ity for al most 20 years. Since 2010, he has spe cial ized in the de vel op ment and im ple men ta tion of ground-mounted solar parks. With his first ground-mounted pro ject, he al ready demon strated that he rec og nized the large po ten tial of PV sys tems. On 160 ha, the solar park was Ger many's largest at the time of its grid con nec tion. Since then, he has re al ized many suc cess ful pro jects in var i ous coun tries through out the world. His solar ca reer was born after the triple dis as ter of an earth quake, tsunami and nu clear melt down in Japan in 2011. Liv ing in Tokyo at the time, he was ac tively in volved in en ergy tran si tion in Japan. His newly es tab lished com pany was one of the first pro ject de vel op ers to de velop, lo cally fi nance, and build solar ground-mounted PV in Japan using Ger man ex pe ri ence and tech nol ogy. He re al ized some very am bi tious and in no v a tive pro jects dur ing that time, in clud ing the largest float ing solar farm in the world at that time. In ad di tion to his solar ac tiv i ties, Stef fen works with a pri vate eq uity fund and pro vides strate gic sup port to growth com pa nies as an ad vi sory board mem ber. Stef fen has pre vi ously been suc cess ful with start-ups in Japan after start ing his pro fes sional ca reer at McK in sey & Com pany, where he worked in Mu nich and then in Tokyo. Stef fen holds a doc tor ate from the Uni ver sity of Duis burg-Es sen and a de gree in en gi neer ing and man age ment from the Uni ver sity of Karl sruhe (TH).

Thomas has de voted him self to pho to voltaics and open land de vel op ment for al most 15 years, first in his own com pany, then as an au tho rized sig na tory for a large com pany spe cial iz ing in cit i zen en ergy and now as CEO of BSC En ergie.
