In 1932, during the Great Depression, Harrison Industries was founded when E.J. Harrison transformed several car bodies into a truck that he named "Chop Suey" and he began to make a modest living hauling his neighbors' trash to the Ventura dumps for 75 cents a load. E.J.'s wife, Myra, managed the financials, becoming a working mother long before this was common. Together they built Harrison Industries, where today three generations of family members are involved in company operations. Now Harrison provides residential, commercial and industrial service to 90,000 customers in the cities of Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Ojai, Fillmore and Carpinteria, the County of Ventura, Limoneira, Naval Base Ventura County, California State Beaches and the Channel Islands Beach Community Services District.
