Italy has traditionally been home to a diverse range of peoples and civilizations due to its key geographic location in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. In addition to the many historical peoples distributed over what is now modern-day Italy, the most prevalent being the Indo-European Italic peoples who gave the peninsula its name, Phoenicians and Carthaginians plagued the peninsula beginning in the classical era.
