IDS Foundation is now raising funds to build additional biogas digesters in South Africa. These digesters will help households to cook on gas instead of fuelwood. The collection of fuelwood results in deforestation, while burning the wood leads to emission of CO2 and inhalation of smoke by women and children in the kitchens. The main advantages of the use of biogas are reduced emission of greenhouse gasses, improved health for women and children, and reduced deforestation. Biogas technology is a powerful tool for poverty alleviation since it uses waste products (i.e. cow dung) to produce a highly useful gas and it creates a number of jobs. A by-product of the production of biogas is so-called ‘slurry', which can be used or sold as a fertiliser.
