Neuropathy is a fairly common condition; and, about 90% of neuropathies involve damage to the nerve axon itself; the myelin sheath is often not affected (nerve axons are often covered with a fatty sheath, known as the myelin sheath). These neuropathies are known as axonal neuropathies, and they are also referred to as small / large fiber neuropathies (the term fiber is often used instead of axonal)... The other 10% of the time, the damage neuropathy causes is done to the myelin sheath only; yet, it can also attack the axon along with the myelin. This is known as demyelinating neuropathy... Neuropathy can have a variety of causes, and one of the most noteworthy is diabetes. Sometimes the cause can be exposure to toxins as well. Neuropathy can even be inherited due to irregularities in person's genetic code.
