Dr. Chris Hawn

Dr. Chris Hawn is NCEJN's Co-Director of Research and Education. They are an environmental scientist who specializes in making science accessible to all. Growing up in the desert, their love of the environment is rooted in the southwest and blossomed in the southeast. They received their Ph.D. in zoology at NC State in 2015. Since then they've been learning grassroots organizing skills to apply to the field of public science with the vision of science that supports accessible and liberated futures. I am an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I've been studying spiders for 10 years and found that there are so many ecological questions that they can help answer. I aim to cultivate culturally-relevant public science that creates actionable environmental research.

Nava Rastegar

Nava is a master's student in the Geography and Environmental Systems department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. She is interested in citizen science, environmental justice, and the relationships between urban populations and their environments. Nava is a Baltimore native and has a BA in Global Environmental Change and Sustainability from Johns Hopkins University, and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems from UMBC.

I am a scientist, educator, and science communicator currently based in Pittsburgh, PA. My favorite part of science is sharing it with others through formal and informal teaching, science writing, social media, and outreach events. My dream is to host a nature show and introduce people to wonderfully weird animals!
