"What's your secret?" a colleague kept asking me many years ago as I was breaking operational records while running a restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio. My restaurant was exceeding operational financial, sales targets as well as having the lowest turnover in the region. I figured out the "secret" to success. The so-called "secret" was to engage and involve employees, called employee engagement. Of course, that meant that as a leader I needed to be engaged myself and open to learning new things from my team members... That was only the beginning of a career that spans over 30 years of retail, hospitality, manufacturing, distribution, and healthcare industries.
