Because disunity is the curse being human. There's this overwhelming idea in a lot of science fiction that humanity will be changed by technology; that humanity has obviously already been changed by technology. We are, of course, much better than the medieval peasant many would say. On that I may disagree. I would say we're a medieval peasant with more food and time.
