Alice Pearson

Job Titles:

Alice is a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser and Chartered Accountant. She provides tax advisory and compliance services to wealthy individuals and families, entrepreneurs and trustees. Alice advises on all UK tax matters including Capital Gains tax and Inheritance Tax and her particular area of expertise is tax planning for those coming to or leaving the UK (pre-arrival and pre-departure tax planning). She is adept at issues such as navigating the Statutory Residence Test, dual-residency issues and the timing of transactions to ensure her clients' financial affairs are structured in a tax-efficient manner. Alice also has a particular interest in domicile issues and advising on the taxation of non-UK domiciled clients. Alice enjoys getting to know her clients well to provide them with the best possible support. When advising on Inheritance Tax and succession planning for family wealth, she places a lot of value in getting to know often multiple generations of a family to understand their objectives so that she can tailor a plan to their personal circumstances. She also enjoys the challenges of keeping on top of changes in legislation affecting her clients and champions a proactive approach making her an extremely effective advisor. Alice was promoted to Tax Partner in 2022 having been a Tax Director since 2020, a reflection of the quality of her work and the expert advice she imparts to her clients. Alice joined Mercer & Hole in 2015 from Rawlinson & Hunter where she worked for seven years. In 2013, Alice was awarded the coveted Ronald Ison Medal for the highest mark in the CTA's Taxation of Individuals' paper. Outside of work, Alice enjoys spending time with her two young children and playing golf and tennis.

Alison Palmer

Alison is an experienced private client professional and a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation. Based at the firm's London office, Alison advises clients on all taxation aspects of their financial affairs, including Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and Inheritance Tax planning, the use of trusts, offshore matters and claiming applicable reliefs. In particular, she has an interest in residence issues and the taxation of foreign domiciliaries. Alison started her career at Ernst & Young and gained her ATT qualification there. She then joined Arthur Andersen, which resulted in a move to Mercer & Hole when part of the private client work of Andersens was transferred to the firm. Spending the next ten years at Mercer & Hole, Alison qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) in 2006. She left the firm in 2008 to join Rawlinson Hunter, where she became a Senior Manager in their London Private Client Tax team. Alison returned to Mercer & Hole in 2015 and was promoted to Tax Director in 2016. She became a partner in 2017. Outside of work, Alison enjoys spending time with her family and is a keen scuba diver.

Andrew Dean

Andrew is based in Mercer & Hole's London office where he manages a diverse audit and advisory client portfolio with entities ranging in size from SME businesses to large groups with an international presence. He specialises particularly in the retail, hospitality, consultancy and property sectors. Andrew has detailed knowledge of reporting under UK GAAP and IFRS and a wealth of experience in group reporting for large corporates. He enjoys the opportunities that his role provides to work with ambitious and entrepreneurial people with growing businesses and he prides himself in building strong and sustainable relationships with his clients. Outside of work, Andrew enjoys spending time in the outdoors and travelling to new and exciting places with his wife and young daughter. He also loves watching and playing football and hacking his way around a golf course.

Andrew Lawes

Andrew is an Audit and Business Advisory Partner based at both the firm's Milton Keynes and St Albans offices. He specialises in working with owner-managed businesses, helping and advising on all aspects of growing the business and planning for exit/succession. Over the years, Andrew has worked with clients in a wide variety of industries and sectors including: Automotive, Manufacturing, Distribution, Property Development and Investment, Telecommunications, Recruitment and Facilities Management. Andrew is responsible for co-ordinating all services provided to his clients. He acts as primary contact for his clients and, through year-round contact, ensures the provision of proactive advice. After graduating from Oxford, Andrew served with the Government, attended military college and worked for British Aerospace prior to becoming an accountant. He then spent 25 years with Ernst & Young and Baker Tilly, where he led services to owner-managed businesses. Andrew joined Mercer & Hole as a Partner in 2013. Andrew is married with two sons. He and his wife live on a smallholding in Bedfordshire where they raise cows, sheep, pigs, chickens and turkeys. He also likes to keep fit and can be seen in the gym most mornings before office hours.

Andy Crook

Andy is an audit and business advisory partner operating out of our London office. He is skilled in delivering high quality audit work, regularly under tight reporting deadlines for businesses operating in a variety of sectors. These are often subsidiaries of large companies, many with overseas ownership and listed status. Andy has incorporated a large number (over 30) of subsidiary companies for overseas holding companies. He provides a full set up service in addition to the outsourcing, compliance and tax work these companies require. Andy provides help in solving many business problems including providing structured business advice using a number of proven methods and techniques. Andy is driven by a desire to give his clients the best possible service and is committed to delivering this goal.

Andy Tasker

Andy Tasker is a Chartered Accountant with considerable practice and commercial experience gained over 25 years in the profession. He is responsible for the day-to-day running of the audit teams and draws on his experience to bring a high quality robust audit to his clients. Andy previously worked at Mercer & Hole where he trained and qualified. He then spent a number of years in practice at KPMG looking after owner managed businesses. Andy also has significant commercial experience gained during his time in industry within a variety of roles which ranged from Financial Controller to Head of Finance. Andy draws on the experience he gained in industry to use in practice. This enables him to take a proactive approach with the team as he is often able to anticipate what potential questions a client will have, what they expect from an audit and how much support they will require. Andy feels this makes a huge difference to client service as he is able to see the bigger picture. Andy is married with two young boys and enjoys spending his spare time travelling with his family and spending weekends in Bournemouth. He is also an avid QPR fan and attends home match fixtures with his sons where possible.

Andy Turner

With a wealth of experience in accounting and audit gained in a Big 4 firm, Andy offers his clients great commercial insight coupled with a dedication to provide them with an excellent service. Andy has a strong background in the sports, media and hotel industries and has worked with a number of high profile clients. These include: The International Tennis Federation, Fulham Football Club, The Ritz Paris, The Savoy, ITV, Universal Pictures, Working Title Films and Omnicom. Client relationships are all important to Andy and he has become a trusted advisor to a number of publicly-known business people. He is recognised as being fair and reasonable, pragmatic and hands-on. Andy joined Mercer & Hole in 2018 after spending 29 years with KPMG. During this time, Andy qualified as a Chartered Accountant, gained an MBA from the Manchester Business School and worked in Manchester, Moscow, New York and London. Outside of work, Andy shares a love of golf with his two sons. He also likes watching football and tennis. Andy's work in the media industry has led to the privilege of a BAFTA membership and he enjoys attending awards and events held there.

Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor is an Audit and Business Advisory Partner and part of the Business Advisory Team at Mercer & Hole based in both the London and Rickmansworth offices, where he has a growing client portfolio in the financial services, property, retail, manufacturing and the leisure & hospitality sectors. He has a wealth of experience and expertise in advising FCA-regulated businesses on technical accounting and audit, compliance and corporate governance and works with both large corporates and SMEs and with ambitious entrepreneurs. Anil joined Mercer & Hole in July 2022 from Azets, where he was a partner in their Audit Team. Prior to this he worked at BDO for 11 years in the financial services team and also worked at Deloitte for six years in their banking and capital markets team. During his time Anil has worked with a broad range of financial services clients including Wealth Managers, Brokers, Lending organisations, and Fintech clients which include Payment Services and E-Money firms. He has also worked across a number of other sectors and with many UK companies and groups that have an overseas parent. Anil builds a strong connection with his clients and his working ethos is one of an honest and collaborative approach in order to provide service excellence for the individuals and companies he works with. To build powerful working relationships with his clients, Anil believes that connecting on a personal level and finding common ground is essential, "I have always found that when you really know your client, you can always find a solution that suits both parties." Anil spends his free time with his wife and young children and is also a Liverpool FC fan.

Ben Samuels

Ben works with a varied portfolio of clients, ranging from high-net-worth individuals to owner managed businesses. On a day-to-day basis, he deals with queries from individuals regarding a mixture of income tax & capital gains tax issues as well as questions regarding corporation tax primarily in relation to owner managed companies. Ben is particularly interested in providing a holistic approach with regards to how corporate and individual taxes interact in order to provide the best solutions for his clients. He has progressed in his role and is now taking a more proactive management function moving on from processing the compliance side of the job as he now manages clients from start to finish. Ben joined Mercer & Hole in July 2018, after finishing university and enrolled on the firm's graduate scheme recently passing both his ACA and CTA qualifications. He spends most of his time in the St Albans office with occasional days spent in London and regularly takes part in firm-wide activities including quiz nights and inter-office football tournaments. Outside of work, Ben likes to spend time with his family and friends. He enjoys travelling and takes every opportunity to visit new countries around the world. He is passionate about sport, particularly football and supporting Manchester United and he also enjoys following cricket.

Bhavin Patel

Bhavin Patel is a Corporate and Business Tax Accountant with valuable experience and insight gained from working with a wide range of accountancy firms. Bhavin joined Mercer & Hole in 2020 and works in the Corporate and Business Tax Advisory team. He specialises in Individual, Owner Managed Business (OMB) and Corporate Tax and supports the team with specific and scenario-based tax advice. Bhavin can offer his clients the benefit of his in-depth technical expertise as he particularly enjoys answering challenging and technical questions, whilst always keeping up with the latest developments in tax legislation. Bhavin joined Mercer & Hole in 2020 from Shipleys LLP. Prior to that, he worked for Wolfson Associates where he completed his CTA. Bhavin qualified as a chartered accountant in India in 2004, and migrated to the UK in 2007, where he completed his ACCA qualification. In his spare time, Bhavin enjoys spending time with family and friends, visiting the cinema, and travelling. Bhavin also likes to keep fit and either runs or works out in the gym every morning before work.

Caroline Valentino

Caroline is a Chartered Tax Adviser and holds the Society of Trust and Estates Practitioner (STEP) qualification. Caroline is based at the Milton Keynes' office, where she advises on Inheritance Tax (IHT), income tax and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) as they relate to family trusts and deceased estates. Caroline prepares accounts, sees to the administration of estates and undertakes planning for the next generation. Caroline takes a problem-solving approach to her work for her clients; helping them to fulfil their planning objectives, whilst managing cashflows and meeting the needs of the beneficiaries. She enjoys reporting back to families on their annual accounts and explaining them so that they are well understood. She also enjoys the evolution involved in trusts work, as the legislation changes and trusts need to adapt, but also seeing young family clients grow up and start the next generation of savers and spenders. Caroline joined Mercer & Hole in 2003, originally working in personal tax, before moving to the firm's Trust team in 2004. Prior to Mercer & Hole, Caroline worked In Trusts at Deloitte, before moving to a small firm in Cambridge, where she gained her first qualifications whilst working in personal tax. Outside of work, Caroline enjoys spending time with her husband and young daughter. Together, they spend a lot of time baking and particularly enjoy geocaching, a pastime they take on holiday and city breaks. Caroline also appreciates classical musical, whether listening to it at home or being captivated by a live performance.

Charmain Alway

Charmain specialises in all aspects of estate planning, probate, inheritance tax and trusts. She enjoys getting to know her clients and what is important to them to provide them with a truly bespoke service when planning for the future. Charmain has 20 years of experience in practice and qualified as a Chartered Tax Adviser in 2004, joining Mercer & Hole in 2008. She became a Private Client Director at Mercer & Hole in January 2021. After a landmark change to the Legal Services Act, the firm became accredited to provide probate services which gave Charmain the opportunity to work closely with clients following the death of a close relative. When considering an individual's tax affairs, likewise when administering an estate, a complete snapshot of income, expenditure, and assets is required. Charmain enjoys bringing the details together and explaining the next steps and decisions to be made in a clear, practical, and sensitive way. The probate work also means she has a greater understanding of post death tax reporting and practicalities which she can draw on when advising on lifetime inheritance tax planning. Outside of work, Charmain is married with two children and enjoys running, swimming, and spending time outdoors.

Chris Dennell

Chris is a Chartered Accountant with experience of audit work, outsourced management accounting and accounts-based corporate finance work. He manages audit and accounts preparation for his own portfolio of clients, which come from various industries, including technology, education, property and construction, healthcare and facilities management. Many of these are start-ups and potentially high-growth businesses who outsource their management accounts. Chris prepares detailed financial forecasts for his clients, either to be used externally to support funding applications, or internally as an operational and management tool. Chris enjoys the challenge of working with a variety of clients of differing sizes and varying needs. Working closely with Partner, Ross Lane, Chris also works on valuations and one-off transactions within the Corporate Finance team. Chris joined Mercer & Hole in 2013 as a graduate trainee. He became ACA qualified in 2016 and was promoted to Audit Manager in 2018. Outside of work, Chris enjoys running, playing football, golf, cricket and tennis, as well as watching a lot of American football. He also helps out on a family allotment and enjoys frequent trips to the cinema.

Chris Geaney

Chris is based at the firm's Milton Keynes office, where he looks after a portfolio of small and medium sized businesses, working closely with partners Steve Robinson and Phil Fenn. Chris specialises in providing support to owner-managed businesses and works with clients in a range of sectors, including manufacturing, construction, property, professional services, retail and distribution. Chris also works with charities and not-for-profit organisations. Chris has considerable expertise in advising solicitors and has built up a strong knowledge of Solicitors' Accounts Rules and the unique accounting and business challenges that arise in this sector. Chris joined Mercer & Hole as a trainee in 2007, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2010 and was promoted to Audit Manager in 2016. Outside of work, Chris' young family are his focus and he enjoys spending time with family and friends. Chris also likes sport and he enjoys playing occasional games of football and squash.

Chris Laughton

Based in the firm's London office, Chris is a Corporate Restructuring Consultant at Mercer & Hole. With transactional experience from M&A to restructuring and a problem solving approach, his emphasis is on practical action and advice. Chris is frequently called upon when businesses and their management are facing unfamiliar challenges. Acting on behalf of management, creditors and other stakeholders, he has many years' experience of advising on business sales transactions and undertaking due diligence exercises. As a champion of the constructive use of insolvency procedures, when necessary, Chris takes appointments as an administrator, liquidator or other insolvency officeholder. He has acted in many industry sectors including retail, manufacturing, printing, wholesale and distribution, leisure, professional practices, property and construction, utilities and not-for-profit. Chris leads the firm's international restructuring practice and, having particular knowledge and experience of European insolvency regimes, including the European Insolvency Regulation, he is one of the few UK officeholders well-positioned to bridge the gulf between understanding and expectations between stakeholders in cross-border restructurings. Recognised for his practical approach and his skills in effecting recoveries through litigation, Chris also has regulatory experience, which has contributed to the demand for his services as an expert witness. He is a member of The Academy of Experts and he represents the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales on the Joint Insolvency Committee, which sets formal regulatory standards. Chris is a past president, an honorary member and the treasurer of INSOL Europe, the European association of restructuring and insolvency professionals; and from 2001 to 2019 he was the editor of ‘Recovery', the quarterly journal of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3). He is also a member of the Lexis PSL Restructuring & Insolvency Consulting Editorial Board, a consultant editor of Corporate Rescue and Insolvency and a regular conference speaker and commentator. Chris joined Mercer & Hole as a partner in 2004. He has been working full time in corporate finance and restructuring since 1983 when he qualified as a chartered accountant; he became a licensed insolvency practitioner in 1987. Married with two children, Chris devotes his leisure time to his family.

Clare Hopkins

Clare works with companies in a wide range of sectors including manufacturing, retail, energy, construction, fintech and eGaming. Based in our St Albans office, Clare specialises in dealing with groups, particularly UK subsidiaries of overseas groups as well as owner-managed businesses of all sizes. With more than 20 years' experience, she has a hand-on and pragmatic approach, working closely with her clients to build strong relationships with them to help them with their UK Auditing, accounting and statutory compliance requirements. Clare also has a strong focus on the technical aspects of UK GAAP and is involved in Mercer & Hole's Audit Technical Committee and audit quality management. Having qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2001, with a small North London practice, Clare first joined Mercer & Hole later that year, spending three years with the firm. She then worked for a top 70, London-based firm for eight years as a Senior Audit Manager before re-joining Mercer & Hole in 2013 and becoming an Audit Director in 2022. Outside of work, Clare enjoys both playing and watching tennis, with the UK grass court season and Wimbledon being a particular highlight of the year. She also has a keen interest in genealogy and loves socialising with friends and family.

Courtney Halifax

Courtney works closely with the firm's private client partners, splitting her time between the firm's St Albans and London offices. Courtney primarily works with high net worth individuals, families and non UK resident individuals. She regularly attends client meetings with partners and is instrumental in pursuing the agreed plan of action, whether that is inheritance tax planning, setting up trusts, ensuring access to relevant reliefs, or working with a client to simplify the structuring of their financial affairs. Additionally, Courtney works with non UK domiciled clients, helping them to understand the complicated tax rules and how the legislation works in relation to their particular circumstances. Courtney enjoys unravelling complexity and the intellectual challenge that comes with keeping on top of changing legislation. She takes particular pride in dissecting complex issues and helping clients gain a real understanding of their financial affairs. Through this approach, she has developed strong client relationships and is well respected by clients and peers alike. Courtney joined Mercer & Hole as a Graduate Trainee in 2013 and became ATT and CTA qualified. She was promoted to Manager in 2018. Outside of work, Courtney enjoys spending time with family and friends especially if this gives her an excuse to cook or bake. She has also recently ventured into running.

Daniel Bisby

Daniel is based at the firm's St Albans office and has extensive experience in all aspects of the administration of trusts. In particular, Daniel has specialised in UK resident trusts, although he has also been involved with trusts resident offshore, charitable trusts and the administration of estates. Additionally, Daniel advises on the tax and other considerations involved in creating new trusts or winding-up existing trusts and appointing out funds to the beneficiaries. A secondment to the firm's Personal Tax department has enabled Daniel to provide a rounded approach to the practical advice he provides to clients. Having joined Mercer & Hole in 2006, Daniel passed the Association of Tax Technician (ATT) Exams in 2008 and gained the Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) qualification in 2010. Recently he completed the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Qualification. Daniel was promoted to Director of Trustees in 2014. In his spare time, Daniel is keen on a variety of different sports and also competes in chess tournaments in the UK and abroad.

Daniel McCloskey

Daniel is based at Mercer & Hole's St Albans office and works with the firm's General Practice partners, managing their clients auditing and accounting requirements. He has considerable experience in dealing with small and medium-sized owner-managed businesses, including groups based in the UK along with parent companies overseas. Daniel also looks after the bookkeeping requirements for a number of clients, including a UK subsidiary of a large, overseas listed company, and is able to assist them with all aspects of their bookkeeping obligations. Having qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 2003 with a Top 25 firm, Daniel made the progression to Audit Manager. He joined Mercer & Hole in 2010 as a Senior Audit Manager. Outside of work, Daniel is a keen sports enthusiast and enjoys football, skiing and playing golf. Daniel is a committee member of Arsenal Independent Supporters Association (AISA) and is also their Forum representative with Arsenal Football Club PLC, where he attends meetings with the Board. He resides locally with his family.

Darrell Barlow

Darrell is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) and Certified Accountant (FCCA) with considerable experience of advising owner-managers on both tax compliance and advisory matters. Working with clients across a wide range of sectors, Darrell provides them with advice and support on specialist areas such as Research & Development relief, capital allowances and planning for transactions. Building strong client relationships is key for Darrell, who enjoys developing his understanding of his clients' business, aims and ambitions. Combining technical knowledge with experience, he is able to advise on the overall impact of taxation and consider areas where there may be a more effective solution. Darrell joined Mercer & Hole's Corporate & Business Tax team in 2017 following two years with Rouse Partners. He had spent the previous 20 years working for Grant Thornton. Outside of work, Darrell enjoys spending time with his family, reading when he can and playing the odd round of golf.

David Hadley

David works out of the firm's London and St Albans offices and is a highly experienced tax professional. He works with a wide range of businesses, ranging from small family companies to large entrepreneurial corporations, as well as charities and not-for-profit organisations. David provides advice on issues including, Entrepreneurs' Relief, Substantial Shareholding Exemption and Inheritance Tax Business Asset Relief. Working closely with the Corporate Finance Team, David is able to provide tax guidance on all aspects of the purchase and sale of businesses. He also advises on reorganisations of businesses, including incorporations, statutory demergers, capital reduction schemes and section 110 reconstructions. Additionally, David has specialist knowledge on tax issues around funding, share schemes and fiscal valuations for the purposes of employment-related securities. David has co-authored chapters on: Selling a Company, Buying a company and Franchising for Tolley's Tax Planning 2016 and is a frequent contributor to the firm's Business blog. David has jointly written a helpful guide to taxation for companies doing business in the UK He also enjoys presenting at seminars on tax issues relating to entrepreneurial businesses and charities. The Charity and Not-for-Profit sector is of particular interest to David, who is able to provide advice on all tax issues, including registration, the review of income streams, use of subsidiaries, issues around Gift Aid and advice on meeting exemptions for mutual trading. David joined Mercer & Hole at the start of 2016, a progressive step in a career, which has spanned more than 30 years. Previously, he was at Kingston Smith for nearly ten years and Grant Thornton before that. Outside of work, David is actively involved in his local church, where he especially enjoys preparing and preaching sermons. He also enjoys following UK and international politics and current affairs.

David Jones

David is an Audit and Business Advisory Consultant based at Mercer & Hole's Rickmansworth office, providing a mixture of audit and business services. Principally, he advises clients in the property and construction sectors, which has given him a good understanding of property VAT and the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS). David enjoys working with his clients and looking after their financial affairs. He gains satisfaction from meeting and surpassing their expectations. David joined Mercer & Hole as a Partner in 2016, as a result of a merger with Day, Smith & Hunter (DSH). He joined DSH in 1984, where he trained and qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Outside of work, David enjoys football and golf - both playing and watching. He is a Manchester United supporter and a Watford FC season ticket holder. David has also been involved in coaching youth football and has two sons who both play in youth teams.

Declan Wagstaff

Declan Wagstaff is a Senior Audit Manager in Mercer & Hole's Audit and Business Advisory Team. Based in our London office, Declan manages a diverse portfolio of corporate audit clients including small to medium-sized owner managed businesses, alongside larger multinational groups. Working across a range of sectors has given Declan valuable insight into various industries, enabling him to broaden his technical knowledge. He particularly enjoys fostering strong relationships with his clients, helping to identify opportunities that will add value to his clients' businesses, and also enabling them to overcome any issues they may face. Declan joined Mercer & Hole in August 2022, having worked at RSM UK since 2016. He gained his ACA qualification in 2019 and was promoted to audit manager in 2020, managing a sizeable portfolio including a range of corporate clients within the professional services, property, healthcare and consultancy sectors. Outside of work, Declan enjoys spending time with friends and family and is keen on travel, having spent eight months traveling around South East Asia and South America in 2015.

Ross is an Audit and Business Advisory Partner and provides the core services of audit, accounting and tax advice to SMEs. Ross also has strong corporate finance experience and handles M&A deals, financial due diligence and valuations assignments. Additionally, Ross is the partner responsible for Mercer & Hole's Outsourcing offering and leads a team which specialises in providing cloud accounting services. Ross's client base varies considerably; ranging from farmers to market leaders in disruptive industries, such as e-sports clients. With experience in the agricultural, leisure and hospitality, media, property development, and transport and logistics sectors, Ross advises SMEs, privately owned companies, UK subsidiaries of overseas companies and growing businesses. Regardless of industry or structure, Ross has the common aim of helping his clients overcome problems, whether real or perceived, to enable them to get on with running their business. Ross likes to get out of the office and meet clients where their business actually takes place. With experience gained in both practice and industry, Ross's insightful and commercially focused business advice, together with his technical expertise suits those with big ambitions for their business. Ross also gains a great deal of satisfaction from putting together specialist teams to ensure that his clients receive a timely and coordinated first class service in relation to every aspect of their requirement. Ross originally trained with KPMG and spent over 12 years with the firm. Ross spent the next five years as the Group Financial Controller of a market leading FTSE 250 Group, overseeing the internal and external financial reporting process and the implementation of a global finance system as well as leading and developing the wider Group Finance function. Ross joined Mercer & Hole as a partner in 2015. Having spent time living and working in France and Denmark, Ross now lives in Hertfordshire with his young family. He has a keen interest in sport, particularly golf, skiing and football. Ross has completed three marathons and is set to run more. He organises an annual Charity Golf Day, which is attended by over 100 people and was a successful leader in the Dragon's Apprentice scheme, which saw his team win the prize for the most funds raised.
