MONTEMAR

Montemar is a project born out of profound love of Galapagos and, honestly, out of frustration! We believe it's such a great responsibility to live in Galapagos because of its uniqueness and fragility. And we believe Galapagos should be the world leader in alternative energies, sustainable building, education for sustainability, thinking and acting according to the uniqueness of the place. But that's not the case, unfortunately, there are many environmental and social challenges in Galapagos, for instance, most energy comes from burning fossil fuel that are brought on a boat 1000km away even though Ecuador is located in the Equator, the best location for solar energy production... In 2011 we decided to create the first off-the-grid house in Galapagos. Montemar was the first project in Galapagos generating most of its energy from solar sources, all the water we use is collected from rain, our property has its own sewage system with microorganisms; and mostly local materials were used..
