Bacteriophages are similar to viruses in size and behaviour, yet they only infect bacteria, whereas viruses infect higher organisms like plants and animals... The number of bacteria that carry antibiotic resistance markers increases rapidly, resulting in bacterial pathogens that are more deadly and very difficult to treat. Antibiotic resistance is therefore one of the most urgent and dangerous problems facing mankind. Bacteriophages can be a key solution to this problem, since there are bacteriophages attacking almost any type of bacteria no matter if a bacterium carries an antibiotic resistance marker or not.
