Hyper9 was a response to the unique problems of managing virtual environments. We crawled virtual asset inventories in VMware and Hyper-V, then indexed that data in Lucene. We built a suite of tools for search, alerting, reporting, and performance analysis. I led design and construction of the UI; first as an HTML/XHR SPA, then in Flex. ProTier was a New Orleans-based startup. Our initial focus was hosting desktop applications (Microsoft Office, Quickbooks) for customers using thin clients. We realized that our real value was the infrastructure automation we built on top of VMware to spin up capacity on-demand. We pivoted to a virtualization automation company and were acquired by Surgient.
