During the production of pig iron and steel, a valuable raw material is created: slag, known in this case as ferrous slag. This artificial rock is very similar to volcanic rock, and 13.5 million tonnes of this artificial rock are produced in Germany each year. In Europe, this figure is 47 million tonnes. The majority of this, around 95%, is used in cement, concrete, fertilisers and other useful products... As a true multi-talent, slag contributes to ensuring that structures are more durable, motorways quieter and safer, and crops grow more productively. It is cost-effective to produce, environmentally friendly, and saves resources by acting as a substitute for natural raw materials. That is good for the environment and good for business.
