In 2016, James Lemmons, the founder of Yemba, and his family adopted a young girl from Africa. When she arrived in America, she didn't know any English. She only spoke Lingala-the native language from her home country. Consequently, for the first few months, James and his family struggled with the language barrier. When speaking with their daughter, one word came up constantly, yemba. At the time, Lingala wasn't on Google translate. Finally, after lots of searching the internet and talking with their daughter, they realized what it meant-to sing.
