David Johnson

Job Titles:
  • Director of Client Services
David is the bridge between our data and our clients' strategic goals. An experienced analyst and relationship builder, he works with our clients to develop a deep understanding of their business, goals and strategy and uses this to deliver insights that help guide commercial decisions. David has 20 years of research experience. He was part of the Acritas team that was acquired by Thomson Reuters in 2019, and across the two businesses he spent 9 years developing and delivering strategic insights that enabled law firm leadership to better understand their client and talent propositions. Prior to joining Lamp House Strategy in January 2023, David was Global Head of Client, Market and Competitive Intelligence at Norton Rose Fulbright where he focussed on bringing the voice of the market into the firm's strategic planning. Outside work, David is also kept busy by two young children, but spends free time running and triathlon training.

Hayley Fothergill

Job Titles:
  • Senior Researcher
Hayley leads on research design, execution and delivery. A former member of the Acritas and Thomson Reuters team, Hayley has almost a decades-worth of research experience and has led a variety of thought-leadership projects within the legal sector. These have covered topics such as DEI, talent and the future of the legal industry itself. Hayley's specialism is in qualitative research, conducting in-depth interviews and coaching teams to improve their own stakeholder feedback programmes. More recently, Hayley has ventured into UX research and design. In her previous role, she established this as a service offering in a leading digital marketing agency, helping online businesses to create more accessible and seamless experiences based on the needs of real users and customers. Outside of work, Hayley is a keen gardener who loves supporting her local bees, butterflies and birds. She spends most of her free time working her way through Ottolenghi cookbooks, practicing yoga and listening to classic pop albums.

Jo Summers

Jo is our lead on client development and go-to market strategy. She scopes client project needs and works with the Lamp House team to deliver the right solutions. Jo's passionate about helping firms to evolve and developing talent within the profession. She is an experienced global relationship lead for our clients, and can present complex data in a practical way to help clients make the optimum use of research insights. She is a regular speaker and panellist in the professional services community. A graduate in Human Resources Management, Jo has more than 20 years' experience in research insights projects for professional services firms. She formed part of the initial team launching Acritas in 2002, developing client relationships and building both the team and the brand globally. Outside work, Jo is kept busy with two active boys and their sporting commitments. She is also a fair weather paddleboarder, tennis player and loves to travel.

Lisa Hart Shepherd - CEO

Lisa Hart Shepherd leads on strategy and product development for Lamp House Strategy. By leveraging empirical research with clients, talent and responsible business experts across the industry, she helps firms to devise strategies that create greater value for their stakeholders and, in turn, sustain their success for the long term. Lisa is a graduate of Mathematics and Management Science and has built up a twenty-five-year career in market research within the professions. In 2002, she founded Acritas, which became the global market leader for market insights in the legal industry, with particular emphasis on market trends, brand, client relationships and talent. She sold that business to Thomson Reuters in 2019. During 2022, Lisa successfully completed the Sustainability Leadership Programme at Imperial College Business School, London. Lisa teaches periodically at the Center for the Legal Profession at Harvard Law School and has led extensive research to find levers to achieve greater equity, diversity & inclusion and wellbeing within the professions. Lisa is part of the Advisory Board for Barbri International, a Non-Exec Director for Hart Door Systems and a strategic research advisor to Handle, a sustainable packaging company. In her downtime, Lisa spends time with her husband and two daughters, enjoys yoga and walking with her naughty Labrador, Archie (who regularly photobombs Teams calls).

Matthew Layton - CEO

Matthew Layton - the Former Global Managing Partner of Clifford Chance - acts as the Chair of Our Advisory Board. Matthew's track-record of excellence in leadership, and of achieving growth through ESG investment, makes him an ideal candidate to advise and guide our industry discussions and direction. Matthew Layton was the Global Managing Partner of the leading international law firm, Clifford Chance, from 2014-2022 having spent nearly 40 years with the firm. Matthew was recognised as a pre-eminent M&A/Corporate Finance lawyer with a particular focus on advising Private Equity funds and several of the firm's major multinational clients. Matthew's previous leadership roles in the firm included leading the firm's Global Corporate Practice from 2008-2014. Matthew holds a number of consultancy and senior adviser roles including as a Senior Adviser to the FTI Consulting Group in EMEA. Matthew is an independent governor and Deputy Chair of the Board of Governors at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Tender Education and Arts. Tender provides drama-based workshops in schools, working with young people to promote healthy relationships and prevent abuse and violence against women and girls. Matthew is also a member of the Institute of Directors' Commission on "The future of inclusive business: harnessing diverse talent for success" chaired by Lord Shinkwin.

Molly Evans

Job Titles:

Molly is a research analyst for Lamp House Strategy. Having recently graduated with a first class undergraduate degree in International Business Management with French from Newcastle University, Molly has returned to Newcastle to focus on sustainability and the relevant research necessary to drive changes towards a better future. Molly has spent a year working and living in Southern France as part of her degree, where she was an operations intern for an SME. During this time, she enhanced her knowledge of French culture and language as well as learning about the business landscape of France. She is the new wellbeing officer for Lamp House Strategy and is eager to implement strategies to ensure mental and physical wellness of the team.

Tom Kelsey

Job Titles:

Tom Kelsey leads on research planning and delivery for Lamp House Strategy. He helps clients take their research goals from ideas through to realisation, providing expert guidance and advice through each stage of the end-to-end process. Tom has nearly fifteen years of research experience, including ten years leading the custom research offering at Acritas, which became the global leader for market insights in the legal industry. It was here he developed a particular emphasis on client, talent, and broader stakeholder feedback, and an understanding of how the industry is changing and needs to change in the future. He moved to Thomson Reuters following Acritas' acquisition in 2019, and led the commercial custom research offering alongside several flagship thought leadership projects within the Market Insights and Thought Leadership department. Prior to joining Lamp House Strategy in 2022, Tom was the Senior User Researcher within the Digital Channels department of DWP Digital, helping to bring the voice of the user to DWP's service modernisation strategy. Outside work, Tom is kept busy with two young children and a Labrador. He loves carpentry and DIY and spends a lot of his free time riding his bike, either outside or racing for an online team in the Zwift metaverse.
