AMERRITT, INC - Key Persons

Arthur W. Merritt - President

Job Titles:
  • Owner
  • President
Arthur W. Merritt was born in Syracuse, New York in May of 1953. His family was relocated to the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago shortly thereafter, where he grew up and discovered his love for baseball and especially the Chicago Cubs. At the age of 13, he moved back with his parents to be closer to both sides of his family in Upstate New York. There he would finish High School and attend the Civil Technology program at Monroe Community College in Rochester, New York, where he graduated in 1973 with an Associates in Applied Science degree in Civil Technology - Environmental Control. Coming fresh out of college, Art became employed by Black & Veatch, a Nationwide Civil Engineering company. He would later work for Larsen Engineering, a local Engineering Company in Rochester, New York, where he would work until eventually coming to the Tampa Bay area in 1978. After bouncing around in an unfamiliar area for a couple of years he eventually became employed at Heidt & Associates, Inc. on January 20, 1980. Heidt & Associates, Inc., was the preeminent Engineering & Surveying company of the Tampa Bay area and there Art would spend the next 30 years of his career. Early on at Heidt & Associates, Inc., Art became the Head Draftsman in the Survey Department under the watchful eye and guidance of the late Walter Caldwell (Professional Florida Land Surveyor No. 850), who quickly became his mentor. It was truly a perfect match. Walter was very particular about how he prepared his work and how it was presented as a final product. It wasn't done and complete unless it was correct. As groomed through his childhood, Art would have similar traits. Under Walter's guidance, Art formed his Survey Work Ethic, much to its form today, and learned one very important rule that he withholds to this day. That is, that there is only one way to prepare your product and that is the "right way". To put the same energy in every product, to not take any short cuts, and to not keep any secrets from issues that were found that were perceived as potential problems. Bring them to the surface to be resolved. By doing so, your client will always be well served. In January of 1988 and still working at Heidt & Associates, Inc., Arthur W. Merritt became a "Professional Florida Land Surveyor No. LS4498". He later became the Head of the Subdivision Layout & Platting Department and a Vice President of the company in 1995. There he would provide exemplary Surveying Services over a large majority of the Land Development projects in the Tampa Bay Area and surrounding regions, as similarly done now at AMERRITT, INC. today. There he would continue in that capacity until, unfortunately and sadly, Heidt & Associates, Inc. went out of business in 2009 and the new life of AMERRITT, INC. would begin.
