The UWI Community Film Project (UWICFP) is a community-based project established in 2011 by then Executive Director, now UWI Mona Deputy Principal, Professor Ian Boxill. The UWICFP gives back to the communities surrounding the UWI Mona campuses in Kingston and St. Andrew, and St. James by teaching inner-city youths the rudiments of filmmaking. This project provides youths with a marketable skill which can then be utilized to earn a living and contribute to their families and their communities. Graduates of the film project go on to complete internships, are self-employed or employed in the media and the filmmaking industries. Over the years, UWICFP has implemented initiatives in at least 49 communities, impacting over 400 lives.
