Nestled in the basement of The El Dorado Lofts in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles' historic core, The Stowaway has taken quite the journey to shore. Originally opened as the El Dorado in 2016 by Hollywood, New Orleans and San Francisco nightlife magnate Rio Hackford, the bar was six years in the making, and started with the history of the building. In 1914, financier N.W. Stowell opened the building as the Hotel Stowell, and the underground tenant was originally a speakeasy. Hackford, along with his partners Dave Neupert, Carl Lofgren, Raub Shapiro and Jim Peres, built the bar from scratch, pouring over every detail to create the perfect cocktail lounge... The Stowaway remained closed for 2 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, during which the partners enlisted New York Piano Man, Howard Stern and NPR alumni Julian Velard to relocate West to help give the bar a new direction based on the iconic LA Jazz clubs of the 1940s and 1950s.
