Candace Surface

As a 4th generation Nashvillian, Candace Surface has deep roots in the Nashville community and is committed to serving the place she calls home. In 2010, Candace began working for Barefoot Republic Camp, serving as Program Director, Development Director and Residential Camp Director over 8 years. Candace also worked intermittently as a teacher, school soccer coach, and church youth director. In 2017, Candace furthered her commitment to nonprofit work and strengthened her skills with a Masters in Nonprofit Management from Lipscomb University, along with a Rule 31 Conflict Mediation Certificate. Through her experiences gained in her nonprofit work and through many conversations with others in the field, she began to realize an ongoing need in the community: one of overall health for those working in helping professions. In 2018, Candace accepted the position of Executive Director with Day 7, a nonprofit that provides wellness and self-care resources to nonprofit and ministry staff in order to: alleviate burnout, promote individual and organizational health, and support a more effective and sustainable service community at large. Candace's work with Day 7 allows her to use her leadership skills, nonprofit experience and commitment to help individuals and local organizations thrive.

Chris Tenpenny

Chris Tenpenny purchased his first SLR camera in 1980 and a passion for photography began. Today, he is a partner photographer for Shine and seldom leaves home without his camera gear. Chris is a career educator and has several years experience working with marginalized youth. In addition to serving at Shine, he has mentored youth at Preston Taylor Ministries and served at The Next Door. He believes strongly in the mission of Shine Photography and "walks the walk" with commitment and positive interaction with Shine student referrals. Chris has been a middle Tennessee resident since 1984. In his spare time, he loves to fly fish area streams and spend time with his lovely wife of 34 years, Robin.

Donna Moffitt - Founder

Donna is passionate about empowering youth who can, in turn, be adults making a positive difference in their family and community . She holds a Bachelor's degree in Public Management and has served at several area non-profits including Preston Taylor Ministries, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, CASA and Special Olympics and is employed in the Nashville Public Schools system. She is a recipient of the Mary Catherine Strobel award and the Tennessee Governor's Volunteer Star award for service to youth. In her free time she loves to spend time with her family, write, photograph everyone, read on her back porch and walk the area greenways. An empty-nester, she lives on the westside of Nashville with her husband, Steve.

Kennedy Rawls

A Nashville Native and rising senior at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Kennedy is majoring in Creative Writing with a minor in Africana Studies. She has been active for several years with Preston Taylor Ministries, a nonprofit serving Nashville youth as well as a host of other programs through networking. She is thankful for an unconventional educational background and for having experienced unique opportunities to meet and gain an understanding of people from all types of communities. She continues to use her unique lens in her writing. Kennedy plans to earn her Doctorate and hopes to inspire others through her poetry.

Matt Verheul

With a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Washington, Matt has spent his career designing projects from coast to coast. Serving several years in teen and young adult mentoring programs, he has a heart for serving and gaining a greater understanding of the issues facing marginalized populations. An avid lifelong learner and a self proclaimed gentleman of leisure, Matt and his wife Christina have shared a deep passion for travel and a desire to experience as much of the world as possible. You will always find them looking for a new adventure, jet-setting to another far away land or a simple weekend hiking the beautiful Pacific Northwest.

Suzanne Salter

Suzanne finds joy being with others and being outside. She focuses on helping clients in the music industry at Music Row Wealth Management with their financial plan, as well as serving others in the Nashville community. Since moving from Georgia to Nashville in 2002, she has devoted her time serving youth with Preston Taylor Ministries, at CASA as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for youth in foster care , and most recently was a mentor to a CASA volunteer. She completed nonprofit board training with Young Leaders Council and served as a board intern for Sister Cities of Nashville. In her spare time, she loves to take advantage of our beautiful local parks by hiking with a friend and her labradoodle, Beckett ,taking a hot yoga class or making a quick road trip to play with her nieces and nephews.

Tessa Frohock - Chairman

Tessa received her Masters in Youth Ministry from Memphis Theological Seminary and is passionate about loving and walking alongside under-resourced youth. Tessa began the youth program for Preston Taylor Ministries in 2006 and has been serving and teaching youth through various nonprofits for 15 years. In the summers, she and Kyle direct a residential camp for Barefoot Republic Camp that serves 800 children and youth from over 40 countries with diverse racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Tessa Frohock resides in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband Kyle and their four daughters.

Vicki Powers

Vicki is the educational audiologist for Metro Nashville schools. Her emphasis is to consider the overall social and emotional well-being of the students as well as their hearing health needs. She is an advocate for the students and counsels them to promote personal responsibility.
