Brian is a member of our Corporate, Commercial services area.
Brian has been repeatedly recommended by LEXPERT® as a lawyer in Banking and Financing matters, and is listed by Lawday Real Time Law as among the 90 leading lawyers in Canada in the area of Banking and Finance.
Brian is a past Commissioner for Nova Scotia Legal Aid. He is past Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Halifax Grammar School, and has served as Treasurer of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party and on the Finance Committee of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society. The former president of Ashburn Golf Club, he has been a member of various fundraising committees for organizations such as the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and the Grace Maternity Hospital.

Colin is a member of our Litigation, Property and Labour & Employment service areas.
Colin is a litigation and property lawyer. His litigation practice includes professional liability claims, long term disability insurance claims, property, business, construction and commercial disputes, and personal injury claims. He has represented clients before all levels of Court. Colin's practice also includes the purchase and sale of residential and commercial properties.
Colin was a member of the boards of Phoenix House and St. Paul's Home for several years, ending his service as Chair of each society. As a parent of two athletic daughters, he was a volunteer coach at the Halifax City Soccer Club, and from that served on the "Halifax City" board for several years, including two years as President. Since 2012, Colin has served on the board of Soccer Nova Scotia. Outside of work, Colin enjoys travelling, exercising at the gym and pool, and golfing.
Danielle is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is proud to be building a legal practice in her home town.
Danielle received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Honours) from Bishop's University in 2015. Danielle went on to obtain her Juris Doctor from the Schulich School of Law in 2019, where she was a Schulich Scholarship recipient. Danielle articled with Burchells LLP and joined the firm's litigation practice group in 2020, when she was called to the bar in Nova Scotia.
Danielle has appeared in all levels of court in Nova Scotia and has also appeared before administrative tribunals in the province. Danielle is building a civil litigation practice and has a particular interest in administrative, human rights, and insurance law.
Outside of work, Danielle enjoys hiking with her partner, practicing yoga, and taking dance classes. Danielle is Chair of the Board of Governors of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, where she studied dance growing up, and is Vice Chair of the CBA-NS Civil Litigation Section.
Derek Simon has a practice focused on working with Indigenous Peoples in the areas of Aboriginal, Commercial, and Environmental Law. He serves a wide range of clients across Atlantic Canada including Indigenous governments, individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and financial institutions.
Derek advises his clients on various legal issue, including:
• Consultation, Negotiations and Litigation related to energy and resource projects, including environmental assessments and impact and benefit agreements;
• Treaty Implementation, Self-Government and Title negotiations;
• Economic Development and Taxation; and
• Governance, Environmental Protection, and Land Management.
He has represented his clients in the courts of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador, and in Federal Court on issues including Aboriginal and Treaty rights, Charter rights, consultation and accommodation, and environmental protection.
Derek serves on the Law Society of New Brunswick's Truth and Reconciliation Committee, and TRC Education Committee. He is a Past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association's National Aboriginal Law Section. Derek has written and lectured on various topics, including Aboriginal law, taxation and economic development, renewable energy, and protected areas.
Derek studied business at Wilfrid Laurier University, law at the University of Victoria, and Indigenous law at Victoria University Wellington (New Zealand). He has Certificates in Negotiation from Osgoode Hall Law School and Indigenous Negotiation Skills Training from the Banff Centre.
Derek is a volunteer with Scouts Canada, United Dartmouth Football Club, and the United Way's Community Land Trust Advisory Board. Derek enjoys camping and the outdoors. Derek and his wife Cheryl live in Dartmouth.

Andrew obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Windsor in 2000 and his Bachelor of Arts (Honours, Philosophy) from Saint Marys University in 1996. He also possesses a certificate in Chinese Language and Culture from Xiamen University in Xiamen, China in 1996.
Andrew is a member of the litigation group, with his practice focusing on creditors' rights, commercial and banking litigation. He acts on behalf of several major lending institutions and appears regularly in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia on debtor and creditor issues.
In his free time Andrew is a valued member of the firm's charity rock band, The Goldilocks Effect, an avid road cyclist, runner, and a PADI certified scuba diver. Andrew volunteers his time on the Board of the Legal Information Society and is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and Risk Management Association.

Jim is a member of our Civil Litigation, and Labour & Employment services areas. While Jim's civil litigation practice is particularly focused on the defence of professionals, including architects, engineers and accountants, and employment law, he also offers general counsel to a number of businesses.
Jim has served our community in various capacities over the past many years, including stints as a Board member with Big Brothers & Sisters, the IWK Health Centre Foundation and the Halifax-Dartmouth Transportation Club. Jim recently served eight years on the Board of Sport Nova Scotia, the last two as its Chair. Currently, he is a member of the Boards of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame and Harbour City Homes, the City of Halifax Non-Profit Housing Society. Jim also spent many years teaching Civil Procedure Workshops at Dalhousie and coaching hockey in the Halifax Hawks Minor Hockey Association. Jim has sipped from the Stanley Cup!
Jason's administrative law practice includes judicial review, regulated professions, human rights, and planning matters. He has appeared before various administrative tribunals including the Muskrat Falls Inquiry, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board and provincial and federal human rights Tribunals.

Kelly obtained her Bachelor of Commerce with distinction from Dalhousie University in 1985 and her Bachelor of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1988. She was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1989 and has been working as a lawyer in Halifax since that time. Kelly joined Burchells as a partner in 2005, and served for over eight years on its Management Committee.
Kelly advises on estate planning and elder law issues including preparation of wills, alter ego and joint partner trusts and testamentary trusts, enduring powers of attorney, and personal care directives. Kelly acts as proctor for many estates, advising personal representatives and beneficiaries on issues arising in connection with the Probate Court requirements and issues relating to the distribution of assets to beneficiaries and to heirs-at-law.
Kelly acts as counsel for business organizations of various sizes and provides advice relating to a wide variety of business law matters including shareholder and buy-sell agreements, partnership agreements, leasing, contract negotiation and preparation. Kelly represents and provides advice to limited and unlimited liability companies, professional corporations and societies, and has extensive experience with amalgamations, windups and other corporate reorganizations.
Kelly acts for vendors and purchasers on asset and share transactions, including preparation and review of purchase and sale agreements, non-competition and non-solicitation agreements, conveyancing and other supporting documents, along with due diligence investigations and advising on compliance with provincial or federal regulatory regimes. She acts for borrowers and lenders in securing financing transactions, with both real and personal property security.
Kelly is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the Canadian Bar Association, and the Halifax Estate Planning Council. She has lectured at various entrepreneurship and small business seminars and various estate planning seminars.
Kelly is the Chair of our firms' Wills, Estates & Trusts Practice Group, a past volunteer Chair of the National Wills, Estates & Trusts Section of the Canadian Bar Association, and has volunteered in many capacities for the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association. She is a past Public Representative for the Atlantic Consumer Response Council of Advertising Standards Canada, a past Chair of the Active & Safe Routes to School Committee at Park West School, past President, Scotia Chapter, of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and a past President of CFB Halifax Curling Club.
Kevin serves on the firm's management board, and focuses his practice in civil litigation.
A native of Riverview, New Brunswick, Kevin attended Mount Allison University and the University of New Brunswick, graduating from the latter with a B.A. in 1984 and an LL.B. in 1987. He articled with what was then Burchell MacAdam and Hayman, joining the firm as an associate upon his admission to the Nova Scotia bar in 1988 and becoming a partner in 1995.
Kevin's practice focuses largely on defending clients of some of the largest and best known general liability insurers. Kevin has worked with insurers defending claims relating to manufacturers and product liability, business interruption, property damage, occupiers' liability and motor vehicle losses. Kevin also acts regularly for major chartered banks, trust companies and private lenders on a variety of plaintiff litigation regarding secured and unsecured debts and also has considerable experience assisting individuals and corporations with disputes relating to estates.
Kevin has appeared at all levels of court in Nova Scotia as well as the Federal Court of Canada and Federal Court of Appeal. Kevin has served as Chair of the Annual meeting for the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society for the past three years and is a member of the Nova Scotia Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Defence Lawyers Association.
Kevin is an avid runner and has completed marathons in New York and Chicago. He also enjoys golf, skiing and general fitness training. He lives in Halifax with his wife, Linda Kirby and the couple's three children.
Marc is a former chair of the municipal and environmental law sections of the Nova Scotia Branch of the Canadian Bar Association, a past chair of The Clean Nova Scotia Foundation and taught business and environmental law at the Schulich School of Law for many years. He currently teaches law to engineering students at Dalhousie University and teaches the law component of the Engineers Canada National Professional Practice Exam Workshop. Marc is a co-author of the leading text on climate change law in Canada, The Law of Climate Change in Canada (Canada Law Book, 2010).

Tiffany Cheverie is Legal Counsel with Burchells LLP. She joined the firm in 2009 as a summer law student. Tiffany holds a BA (St. Thomas University), an LLB (Dalhousie University) and a Certificate in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution (Dalhousie College of Continuing Education). She practices in the areas of administrative law, insurance law and property law. Tiffany is keenly interested in the alternative dispute resolution process. She provides advice and representation on matters involving insurance contract disputes, personal injury, professional discipline and real property conveyancing. Tiffany has participated in numerous mediations and settlement conferences for clients.
Inside the firm, Tiffany has been an active mentor for newer lawyers and dedicated her time to our Articling Program. She continues to be involved in mentorship and training of Articling Clerks and summer students.
Since September 2019, Tiffany has split her time between legal practice and a faculty position at the Nova Scotia Community College where she teaches law to the Paralegal and Business students. At NSCC, Tiffany teaches Litigation as well as Property and Conflict Resolution to the Paralegal Students. She also teaches Business Law to students in the Accounting and Entrepreneurship programs. As Faculty at NSCC, Tiffany is passionate about bringing industry expertise to the classroom and building strong authentic relationships with students.
In her spare time, Tiffany volunteers with the First Baptist Church Refugee Resettlement Committee. She is a proud mother to three boys. Tiffany is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society.
