Augustus Pendleton

Cornell Microbiology PhD Rotation Student E-mail: arp277@cornell.edu Links: Personal Website and Twitter Gus (he/him) is a first-year graduate student studying microbiology. He was raised in Wisconsin and received his degree in microbiology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He then received a master's in geography from the University of Galway. He has worked in diverse research projects including bacterial physiology, seaweed policy, and pathogenic gene regulation. In grad school, Gus plans to expand his skills as a bioinformatician while studying interactions within complex microbial communities. In his free time, Gus enjoys baking pies, Nordic skiing, and doing pretty much anything that's outside.

Brandon Reyes-Chavez

Brandon (he/him) is a first-year graduate student studying Microbiology. He is a California local and graduated from the University of California, Davis in Microbiology. He worked in a developmental biology lab for three years, studying Hydra vulgaris to understand the fundamentals of nervous system development. His interest in Microbiology emerged from the impacts that microbes had on his research (contaminated Hydra plates) and the world around him (pandemics). He aims to study the microbial world around us in hopes of finding ways to use their biological potential to solve real-world issues. He aims to start a lab of his own to mentor aspiring scientists and lead his curiosity. He likes to play tennis and brew kombucha in his free time.

Job Titles:
  • Cornell Undergraduate Researcher, Summer 2022

Dr. Marian L. Schmidt

Marian (they/them) grew up on Lake St. Clair, the lake that connects Lake Huron to Lake Erie, where they developed a curiosity of aquatic ecosystems and the Great Lakes. After attending Hampshire college, where they surprisingly designed a "major" in environmental microbiology, they fell in love with the world's tiniest organisms: bacteria. Marian's research interests are in microbial ecology, evolution, genomics, limnology and bioinformatics. In their spare time, they like to run far on the "gorges" trails of Ithaca, bake sweet treats (especially granola), and spend time with the Lab dog, Walli. Marian once swam from Asia to Europe across the Bosphorus above thousands of jellyfish!

Gabriela Acevedo Oquendo

Job Titles:
  • Undergraduate Researcher, Summer 2022
Gabriela (she/her/ella) was born and raised in Puerto Rico. As a latina in STEM, she is a rising senior pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology in the University of Puerto Rico, Humacao Campus. Gabriela holds a great interest in bacterial interactions, pathogenic bacteria, and microbial community assembly. In the lab, Gabriela is working on how oyster farming influences marine sediment bacterial communities and their biogeochemistry. Her dream is to venture into the medical field, hoping to become a neonatologist or a medical microbiologist! In her spare time, Gabriela enjoys cooking for her friends and family. A Gaby fun fact: her favorite animal is a manatee!

Joseph S. Nocua

Job Titles:
  • Cornell Undergraduate Researcher
Joseph (he/him) is a junior in Biological Sciences (concentrating in microbiology) from San Juan, Puerto Rico. His research interests include anything to do with aquatic microbiology, from community assembly to horizontal gene transfer. He aims to obtain a PhD in Environmental Microbiology and to go into academia. In the lab he is studying microbial assembly in local freshwater communities around Ithaca. During his free time, he enjoys hiking, fĂștbol (the real one), and spending time with his friends watching TV.Fun facts: Joseph has traversed the entire length of Puerto Rico thrice on foot, and he thinks ducks are underappreciated.

Julia Meyer

Julia (she/her/hers) is a recent Cornell graduate from Buffalo, New York. She earned her bachelor's degree in Astronomy in May 2022, with a focus on planetary science. She has a broad interest in microbiology and is enthusiastic about applying that to her astronomy background through a focus on astrobiology. She is currently working on a collaborative project evaluating the impact of floating solar panels on aquatic microbiota at the Cornell experimental ponds and contributing to establishing the lab. In her spare time she enjoys playing rugby, knitting/crocheting, and attempting to keep her houseplants alive.

Michael Bai

Job Titles:
  • Cornell Undergraduate Researcher, Summer 2022
Michael (he/him) is a rising junior in Biometry & Statistics from the outskirts of Philadelphia. His research interests are broad and include bioinformatics, microbiology, genomics, oncology, epidemiology, and anatomy. Behind all these interests is his aspiration for a career in bioinformatics. In the lab, Michael is using his coding skills to search for mobile genetic elements in freshwater bacterial communities. Outside of work, Michael likes going on long runs throughout Ithaca, dabbling in drink recipes, and playing the saxophone for the Big Red Marching Band. He is a huge fan of reality TV cooking shows such as Kitchen Nightmares and Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives.

Sam Katz

Job Titles:
  • Cornell Undergraduate Researcher, Summer 2022
Sam (he/him) is from Highlands Ranch Colorado, where he spends a lot of his time hiking, fly-fishing, and just enjoying the great outdoors. As a rising senior at Cornell University, he studies Biological Engineering with a focus in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Sam's research interests focus on synthetic biology and genetic engineering and he hopes to work as a Bioprocess Engineer after completing his Master's in 2024. In the lab, Sam is working on isolating and cultivating bacteria that live in association with particles in freshwater ecosystems.
