Lisa Southwood

Job Titles:
  • Headteacher
For over 20 years I have worked in education in both Primary and Secondary Mainstream and Special Needs Sectors. It is really important to me that all pupils with SEND fulfil their full potential and I have the passion, commitment and vision to help to ensure that all pupils succeed. I have gained valuable experience working in an Outstanding Special School during this time. I spent my first 3 years as a teacher in a Mainstream Primary School in Salford teaching within KS2 to Year 5. I then spent the rest of my teaching career working in Special Education here at Oakwood Academy developing the Year 7 Foundation Provision, progressing to joining the Senior Leadership team as Outreach Manager, SLE, helping to lead the school to achieving Teaching School status. My role then progressed to Deputy Headteacher/Director of Teaching School, then moving on to becoming Headteacher. Through these roles I was able to be influential in setting up our Teaching School, forming great networks and partnerships with our alliance of schools and HEIs. Through these roles I have extensive experience of ITT, being able to recruit and train our next generation of SEND teachers through School Direct and undertake school to school support in a variety of settings. I have also been developing CPD opportunities for colleagues in school and wider to ensure that all pupils with SEND receive the best opportunities to succeed and thrive.

Liz Capell

Job Titles:
  • Head of Sixth Form
I have been working at Oakwood Academy for the last 21 years. I started my career at Oakwood as a TA supporting students within the classrooms. I soon found a passion for supporting young people with SEND and through working with amazing and inspirational staff I then completed my HLTA. This gave me experience of teaching KS3 and 4 for four years. I progressed onto the role of Transition Advisor, this jobs ensured all students had the opportunity of continuing their education after year 11 at Oakwood. While working as the transition advisor I completed a BA Honours Degree in Teaching Learning and Mentoring at night school. I then complete the Assessment only route and qualified as an English teacher. Through my teaching / transition role I worked with the students as they moved through the school, I saw how they gained confidence in their abilities and developed their academic careers very successfully. Unfortunately, there wasn't always the provision suitable to build on the amazing work that had been put in by Oakwood when the students left in year 11. To make sure the students continued to progress successfully I suggested to the Head teacher the possibility of Oakwood having its own Sixth Form. From this conversation we quickly established out own Sixth Form which has grown from strength to strength. Starting with twelve students in September 2012, we have now grown to over 66 students to date.
