SEA-CUBED - Key Persons

Gilly Fox - Managing Director

Job Titles:
  • Architect
  • Managing Director
Gilly Fox is a naval architect who has extensive experience in project-managing large, innovative and complex projects in both the marine and construction industries. His passion for composite materials started when building racing dinghies in his early teens and culminated in him developing the definitions for composite construction best practice for government clients in his forties. Gilly's numerous projects include the 1999 RIBA building of the year - the ground-breaking Media Centre at Lords Cricket Ground - which ‘broke the mould' for large, complexly-curved buildings. He has also been involved in a number of superyacht new builds and refits including the 125' motor vessel ‘Fair Lady', the 180' schooner ‘Fleurtje', and the 142' ketch, ‘Rebecca'. Gilly's early career included sailing professionally as well as building Oyster 55s and Freedom 40s. Prior to starting Sea-cubed, Gilly spent ten years in an advisory capacity for the marine industries where he worked for many large corporate clients and national bodies including the UK MoD, US Dept of Defense, National Lottery, UK DTI and the UK Society of Maritime Industries. His areas of expertise include shipyard design; performance improvement; market analysis; GRP construction; superyacht construction; work content estimation; supply chain development; and marine equipment market research. Recently Gilly worked on the construction of the largest composite bridges grp structure in the UK to date - the Haughton Road footbridge. This complex 52-metre structure has no lines of symmetry and weighs nearly 20 tonnes. Gilly has lectured part-time in composite materials at the Falmouth Marine School and has also won an innovation SMART award for an entirely new approach to open-class racing yacht design.

John Lambert

Job Titles:
  • Production Manager
John Lambert has pursued a career based on his fascination with the benefits of composite materials and has enviably maintained a balance between desk work and hands-on experience. Also a naval architect, John dedicated his post-graduate studies to the investigation of preferential ‘twist' in composite foils. He went on to apply this knowledge to the construction of racing yachts and dinghies at one of the UK's premiere racing boatbuilders, Ovington Boats. Here his experience was extended to tool-making and the hand-lamination of polyesters and epoxies. Working for Proctor Masts, John added carbon pre-pregs and resin infusion to his skills before spending seven years at SP Technical Services, providing on-site technical assistance to key customers for the largest composite material supplier in the World. Here he gained an in-depth knowledge of heavyweight pre-pregs and high-temperature tooling systems, particularly for large wind turbine blades. For these, John was responsible for many advances and innovations in manufacturing techniques. In recent years, John has developed his skills and experience in fibrous plaster composites and advanced moulding techniques, as used by NASA. In addition to his work with Sea-cubed, John provides restorative solutions in the heritage and new build fields with fibrous plaster, glass reinforced gypsum and GRP. He is also an accomplished sailor and model-maker of J-class yachts.
