GNU was launched by Richard Stallman (rms) in 1983, with the goal of developing a wholly free (as in freedom) operating system, the GNU operating system, to give all software users control and freedom over their computing. Today, the GNU system is most commonly used with the kernel Linux, the system we call GNU/Linux.
