Donna Galgano

Donna Galgano, the Nurse Practitioner at New York Breast Health, received her undergraduate nursing degree from the State University at Binghamton. She completed a Master's Degree in Health Education at Adelphi University, as well as a second Master's Degree in Nursing with certification as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner. For eight years, Ms. Galgano was the Director of Breast Cancer Patient Education for the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. She developed a comprehensive, multidisciplinary education program at three health system hospitals called, "Living With Breast Cancer," for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families. She successfully managed them for more than six years. She is certified by the State of New York as an Adult Health Nurse Practitioner. She is an active member of several professional societies including the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association and the Oncology Nursing Society. Donna assists the physicians with all aspects of patient care including well and high-risk patient management, postoperative care, clinical trials, genetic testing, and survivorship. She also serves as a Patient Navigator for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer provide, guidance, referrals and educational counseling.

Dr. Corinne E. Tobin

Corinne E. Tobin, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained breast imager with over 25 years of experience in the field. Dr. Tobin has expertise in all aspects of breast imaging including interpretation of 3D mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and the performance of all breast interventional procedures including stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI-guided breast biopsy, as well as ultrasound-guided aspiration, breast Saviscout localization, and breast needle localization. Dr. Tobin graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and New York Medical College with a Doctor of Medicine. She then completed a Diagnostic Radiology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center and obtained fellowship training in women's imaging at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, under the directorship of Dr. Ellen Mendelson, a leader in breast imaging. After completing her fellowship, Dr. Tobin became the first female senior shareholder and Director of Breast Imaging at NRAD, one of the largest and most successful breast imaging practices on the east coast. For the past six years, she has been on the staff at NYU, acting as both a Clinical Associate Professor of Radiology and Section Head for the NYU Long Island Division of Breast Imaging. Dr. Tobin has published and lectured numerous times on breast imaging, breast intervention, and the evaluation of post-surgical breasts. She is a member of the American College of Radiology, the Society of Breast Imaging, the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, and the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Tobin is married with three daughters. She prides herself on being a staunch advocate for women's healthcare. In her spare time, Dr. Tobin enjoys cooking, traveling, Peloton strength, and fitness classes, and she hopes to return to the tennis courts now that her youngest daughter is off to college.

Dr. Craig B. Larsen

Dr. Larsen earned his medical degree at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed a general surgery residency at New York Presbyterian-Queens and a fellowship in breast surgical oncology at the Allegheny General Hospital, a large urban facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Similar to many who join this field, the personal experience of having close family members battling breast cancer solidified Dr. Larsen's commitment to serving this patient population. He has worked with diverse populations throughout his career, including time spent in Guatemala and Zimbabwe. He is bilingual, fluent in English and Spanish, and is excited to return to New York City to join NYCBS and provide the highest level of care to its diverse and unique community. Dr. Larsen has specific training with nerve preservation and resensation at the time of breast surgery. Dr. Larsen has experience with several localizing techniques and oncoplastic closures for partial mastectomies. In addition, he performs both electrocautery and tumescence-based mastectomies. He enjoys learning new languages and has traveled to 20 countries (and counting).

Dr. David P. Mangiameli

Dr. David Mangiameli is a respected board-certified surgical oncologist. His dedicated expertise focuses on enhanced screening for high-risk patients, minimally invasive breast surgery, oncoplastic surgery, and customization of surgery for cancer in women who are universally and intrinsically unique. Dr. Mangiameli feels that there is a wide spectrum of options that lie between lumpectomy and mastectomy. Cancer removal is first and foremost; however, there are commonly more than just two surgical options. Dr. Mangiameli is adamantly patient-centric. Subsequently, he practices evidence- based medicine with a comprehensive team that includes: medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, pathologists, and fellowship-trained women's imagers (radiologists). All cancer patients are discussed at conferences attended by these cancer specialists. There are multiple cancer specialists involved simultaneously and from the beginning. This is why cancer center accreditation is so critical. This level of team involvement is what is required. Dr. Mangiameli's program is the only accredited cancer center from Patchogue to Montauk and Orient. He has offices in Patchogue, Southampton, and Riverhead. Every site visit of Dr. Mangiameli's team since 2014 by the American College of Surgeons has resulted in a perfect full accreditation. Dr. Mangiameli performs all forms of breast and chest wall surgery. This includes minimally invasive breast surgery, complex oncoplastic surgery, chest wall resections and reconstruction, nipple-sparing and traditional mastectomies, sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy, and full lymph node dissections. Additionally, he collaborates with his plastic surgery colleagues to achieve immediate reconstruction using implants and all forms of autologous flap reconstruction. In addition, he has extensive training and experience in screening and managing women who have high breast cancer risk from genetic mutations and other cumulative risk factors. He has been a founding program director of a breast cancer center here in Suffolk County since 2014. Dr. Mangiameli has continuously provided the energy and leadership to compel and coordinate these clinical teams. Together they have treated thousands of women according to national guidelines. Additionally, he has been involved in many community outreach programs, including the NYS Cancer Screening Program. He also serves as a Police Surgeon for The New York State Troopers and the Police Surgeons Benevolent Association. Dr. Mangiameli completed general surgery/trauma residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. He additionally completed a fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute; a fellowship in Immunotherapy for Cancer also at the National Cancer Institute; and served as the SSO Fellow in Oncoplastic and Oncologic Breast Surgery at Columbia Presbyterian, College of Physicians and Surgeons, in NY. Dr. Mangiameli has authored clinical and scientific textbook chapters, as well as peer-reviewed journal articles for his original work in genomics and small molecule drug analysis. Additionally, he administered clinical trials at the NIH and is a patent holder. Dr. Mangiameli is foremost a father of two and also a musician and outdoors sportsman.

Dr. Dwight De Risi

Dr. Dwight C. De Risi is Long Island's leading surgical oncologist, specializing in diseases of the breast. He has been in private practice for nearly 35 years, 10 of which were as the Chief of the Breast Service at ProHEALTH Care Associates before joining NY Breast Health. He attended Seton Hall University, received his doctorate from Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed his four-year surgical residency and one-year chief-ship training at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. In addition, he completed a one-year fellowship in Pathology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. He obtained his board certification in general surgery. Through his years in private practice, Dr. De Risi has remained a leader in his field by introducing and popularizing cutting-edge surgical and diagnostic techniques. Some of these have included mastectomy with immediate reconstruction, partial mastectomy with oncologic plastic reconstruction, lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy, skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, ductal lavage, MRI of the breasts, accelerated breast brachytherapy, the HALO procedure for evaluation of nipple duct fluid, and cryoablation of tumors. Dr. De Risi is a member of many prestigious organizations including the American College of Surgeons, The American Medical Association, The Society of Surgical Oncology, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, and The American Society of Breast Disease. Dr. De Risi has been recognized and honored for his accomplishments by several organizations including the Sass Foundation for Medical Research, The Beth C. Tortolani Breast Cancer Foundation, The New York College for Wholistic Health, Education and Research, Glen Cove CARES, Lean On Me Breast Cancer Network Inc., the prestigious Networking Magazine's, Man of the Year David Awards, NOW (Nassau Organization for Women), and North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove. In addition, Dr. De Risi received the Gay Stoddard Award from the Susan G. Komen of Greater New York, the National Congressional Committee Leadership Award, and was presented with the Honorary Co-Chairman President's Advisory Board Award. Most recently Dr. De Risi was honored by the American Cancer Society as an outstanding community leader in his field of expertise. He attributes his continued success to the love, understanding, and support from his wife Donna, and his four children Darren, Drew, Dara, and Deirdre. The greatest joy in his life is his family. He is a proud grandfather. His goal is, "to help rid the world of this dreaded disease called breast cancer," which he believes will be a reality in the not so distant future.

Dr. Julian Safir

Julian Safir, MD, is a board-certified radiologist with over 27 years of experience. Dr. Safir received his Doctor of Medicine from the University Of Maryland. He completed his diagnostic radiology residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center and his fellowship in MRI at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Safir is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Safir was inspired to enter the specialty of radiology while in college at Duke University, where he majored in biomedical engineering. His research publications and presentations have focused on breast MRI for cancer detection. Dr. Safir is widely recognized as an expert in breast MRI. He is excited to bring that expertise to NY Breast Imaging.

Dr. Kelly Johnson

Kelly Johnson, DO, is a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained breast surgical oncologist dedicated to women's health. Dr. Johnson grew up in the Hudson Valley in Sugarloaf, NY, and is excited to practice in her home state, providing renowned comprehensive breast care and surgical expertise to her local community on Long Island. Dr. Johnson's career in medicine and surgery was sparked by her love of science, art, volunteerism, and the social aspects of working in a team towards a common goal. She received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Arts in Women's Studies at the University of Scranton. Her love for travel developed during her undergraduate years when she had the opportunity to study abroad in Rwanda, England, and the indigenous villages of Mexico, where she learned about medicine and health systems in developing countries, gender equity, ecotourism, and development. She plans in the near future to participate in medical mission trips abroad. She received her medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed her General Surgery Residency at Geisinger in Wilkes Barre, PA, where she was the academic chief resident. She is board certified by the American College of Surgery. Following her residency, Dr. Johnson furthered her expertise, completing a Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO)-approved Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. In addition to her love of surgery and women's health, Dr. Johnson's path to breast surgical oncology was fueled by personal experience. She watched as her grandmother fought and beat breast cancer twice but eventually succumbed to recurrent disease. This not only turned her path toward breast oncology but further deepened her knowledge of the importance of support through all stages of cancer care and one's own journey. She believes the center of patient care is the partnership, trust, and relationship created between the patient and provider. It is imperative for the patient and provider to determine the best treatment plan together, providing an individualized, patient-centered approach to care, as each person is unique. There is no cookie-cutter model of care, and she has pursued further specialized training to provide her patients with options to create a plan and outcome they are satisfied with. She also believes in the importance of helping her patients create a support group that may include family, friends, and/or other cancer survivors in addition to their medical team to help them along their journey. Dr. Johnson prides herself in being up to date with the most cutting-edge surgical techniques. She has trained using multiple localization techniques, including SAVI, radioactive seed, tattooing, and needle localization. She regularly performs axillary reverse mapping when performing axillary surgery and SLYMPHA to decrease the risks and rate of lymphedema. She has been trained to use multiple lymphatic mapping methods, including blue dyem technetium and SPY fluorescence imaging. She actively participated as a co-surgeon in a novel margin assessment clinical trial at Montefiore. She has extensive training in oncoplastic techniques, including hidden scars, flat closures, tissue rearrangement to improve cosmetic outcomes, and skin and nipple-sparing mastectomies. She additionally recognizes the importance of each individual's choice in reconstruction options and works alongside local plastic surgeons who can provide all reconstructive options to her patients. She received her certification in robotic general surgery during her residency and is excited about the prospects of robotic surgery in the field of breast surgery. Dr. Johnson is the author of numerous publications and has presented at various regional and national meetings. Her research interests lie in lymphedema prevention and treatment, lobular carcinoma, de-escalation of care, underserved communities, and patient satisfaction outcomes. She also has special interests in oncoplastic surgery, genetic testing, and caring for high-risk patients. Dr. Johnson takes great pride in her osteopathic education. As an osteopathic physician, she has completed over 200 hours of training in osteopathic manipulative medicine in addition to standard medical education. Osteopathic manipulative techniques are hands-on techniques used to treat bodily dysfunction caused by illness, injury, or surgery to restore functionality, improve movement and promote healing. She believes in living a healthy lifestyle to promote total body wellness and the connection of the body, mind, and spirit. She understands the importance of treating the whole being to create health, balance, and strength in order to fight disease. She has training in a multitude of manipulative techniques to improve range of motion, lymphatic drainage, and help restore overall well-being. Dr. Johnson is a member of organizations, including The American Society of Breast Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, The American Society of Clinical Oncology, the New York Metropolitan Breast Cancer Group, Medical Society of the State of New York, and the Association of Women Surgeons, Pinnacle - Women in Medicine. Dr. Johnson resides in Smithtown with her husband and two cats, Charlie and Penny. She cherishes spending quality time with her family and friends and is very grateful for their love and support. In her spare time, she enjoys running, swimming, snowboarding, cooking, leisure reading, spending weekends exploring Long Island with her husband, and enjoying their home.

Dr. Krystal Airola

Dr. Airola is a board-certified fellowship-trained radiologist with experience in breast imaging. She has devoted her training and career to serving patients and aims to provide personalized, quality care. Dr. Airola completed her breast imaging fellowship at New York University. She received her medical degree from The Medical University of South Carolina. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Stony Brook Medicine, where she served as Section Chief of Breast Imaging. Dr. Airola has taught medical students, physician assistant students, radiology technician students, and residents throughout her early career. She received recognition for her efforts with the Stony Brook Medicine Radiology Teaching award in 2018 and Teacher of the year in 2022. She believes education and training are integral components of patient care as well as the development of the medical field.

Dr. Nella Shapiro

Dr. Shapiro serves as the Director of Breast Surgery at the Eastchester Center for Breast Care, a division of New York Cancer & Blood Specialists. She was an assistant clinical professor in the combined departments of surgery at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the associate director of surgery at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital. Dr. Shapiro is a graduate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She interned and did her residency at Montefiore Hospital Medical Center, where she was the first woman to complete the general surgery residency. She also introduced the technique of laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the Jack D. Weiler Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Gandhi is skilled in all aspects of breast imaging, including mammography, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, MRI, and interventional procedures. Dr. Gandhi earned her medical degree from Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. She then completed an Internal Medicine Internship at North Shore-Long Island Jewish, followed by Radiology Residency at Columbia University affiliated Harlem Hospital Center, where she was named Chief Resident. She completed her Breast Imaging Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center.
